Prior to Kconfig, the CPU field of boards.cfg could optionally have
":SPLCPU", like "armv7:arm720t".
(Actually this syntax was only used for Tegra platform.)
Now it is not necessary at all because CPU is defined by
CONFIG_SYS_CPU in Kconfig.
For Tegra platform, the Kconfig option is described as follows:
config SYS_CPU
string
default "arm720t" if SPL_BUILD
default "armv7" if !SPL_BUILD

In Python, sys.exit() function can also take an object other
than an integer.
If an integer is given to the argument, Python exits with the return
code of it. If a non-integer argument is given, Python outputs it
to stderr and exits with the return code of 1.
That means,
print >> sys.stderr, "Blah Blah"
sys.exit(1)
is equivalent to
sys.exit("Blah Blah")
The latter is a useful shorthand.
Note:
Some error messages in Buildman and Patman were output to stdout.

Currently buildman allows a list of boards to build to be specified on the
command line. The list can include specific board names, architecture, SOC
and so on.
At present the list of boards is dealt with in an 'OR' fashion, and there
is no way to specify something like 'arm & freescale', meaning boards with
ARM architecture but only those made by Freescale. This would exclude the
PowerPC boards made by Freescale.
Support an '&' operator on the command line to permit this. Ensure that
arguments can be specified in a single string to permit easy shell quoting.

Normally buildman operates in two passes - one to do the build and another
to summarise the errors. Add a verbose option (-v) to display build problems

This commit enables Kconfig.
Going forward, we use Kconfig for the board configuration.
mkconfig will never be used. Nor will include/config.mk be generated.
Kconfig must be adjusted for U-Boot because our situation is
a little more complicated than Linux Kernel.
We have to generate multiple boot images (Normal, SPL, TPL)
from one source tree.
Each image needs its own configuration input.
Usage:
Run "make <board>_defconfig" to do the board configuration.
It will create the .config file and additionally spl/.config, tpl/.config
if SPL, TPL is enabled, respectively.
You can use "make config", "make menuconfig" etc. to create
a new .config or modify the existing one.
Use "make spl/config", "make spl/menuconfig" etc. for spl/.config
and do likewise for tpl/.config file.
The generic syntax of configuration targets for SPL, TPL is:
<target_image>/<config_command>
Here, <target_image> is either 'spl' or 'tpl'
<config_command> is 'config', 'menuconfig', 'xconfig', etc.
When the configuration is done, run "make".
(Or "make <board>_defconfig all" will do the configuration and build
in one time.)
For futher information of how Kconfig works in U-Boot,
please read the comment block of scripts/multiconfig.py.
By the way, there is another item worth remarking here:
coexistence of Kconfig and board herder files.
Prior to Kconfig, we used C headers to define a set of configs.
We expect a very long term to migrate from C headers to Kconfig.
Two different infractructure must coexist in the interim.
In our former configuration scheme, include/autoconf.mk was generated
for use in makefiles.
It is still generated under include/, spl/include/, tpl/include/ directory
for the Normal, SPL, TPL image, respectively.

Normally buildman wil try to configure U-Boot for a particular board on the
first commit that it builds in a series. Subsequent commits are built
without reconfiguring which normally works. Where it doesn't, buildman
automatically reconfigures and retries.

bit for failing builds. Previously they would always be built twice.

Generally a build failure with a particular commit cannot be fixed except
by changing that commit. Changing the commit will automatically cause
buildman to retry when you run it again: buildman sees that the commit
hash is different and that it has no previous build result for the new
commit hash.
However sometimes the build failure is due to a toolchain issue or some
other environment problem. In that case, retrying failed builds may yield
a different result.
Add a flag to retry failed builds. This differs from the force rebuild
flag (-f) in that it will not rebuild commits which are already marked as
succeeded.

It is true that GCC on Cygwin spits executables with .exe extention.
For example,
gcc -o foo foo.c
will generate "foo.exe", not "foo".
But GNU make is also nicely adjusted for Cygwin.
For example,
foo: foo.c
gcc -o $@ $<
will compare the timestamp between "foo.exe" and "foo.c".
You do not have to tweak Makefiles like this:
foo$(SFX): foo.c
gcc -o $@ $<
And "make clean" works as well without adjustment for Cygwin because
the command "rm foo" on Cygwin will delete both "foo" and "foo.exe".
In conclusion, makefiles do not need special care for Cygwin.

Some NOR flash devices have a small erase block size. For example, the
Micron N25Q512 can erase in 4K blocks. These devices expose a bug in
fw_env.c where flash_write_buf() incorrectly calculates bytes written

This commit changes the working directory
where the build process occurs.
Before this commit, build process occurred under the source
tree for both in-tree and out-of-tree build.
That's why we needed to add $(obj) prefix to all generated
files in makefiles like follows:
$(obj)u-boot.bin: $(obj)u-boot
Here, $(obj) is empty for in-tree build, whereas it points
to the output directory for out-of-tree build.
And our old build system changes the current working directory
with "make -C <sub-dir>" syntax when descending into the
sub-directories.
On the other hand, Kbuild uses a different idea
to handle out-of-tree build and directory descending.
The build process of Kbuild always occurs under the output tree.
When "O=dir/to/store/output/files" is given, the build system
changes the current working directory to that directory and
restarts the make.
Kbuild uses "make -f $(srctree)/scripts/Makefile.build obj=<sub-dir>"
syntax for descending into sub-directories.
(We can write it like "make $(obj)=<sub-dir>" with a shorthand.)
This means the current working directory is always the top
of the output directory.

ARM64 uses the newer RELA-style relocations rather than the older REL.
RELA relocations have an addend in the relocation struct, rather than
expecting the loader to read a value from the location to be updated.
While this is beneficial for ordinary program loading, it's problematic
for U-Boot because the location to be updated starts out with zero,
rather than a pre-relocation value. Since we need to be able to run C
code before relocation, we need a tool to apply the relocations at
build time.
In theory this tool is applicable to other newer architectures (mainly
64-bit), but currently the only relocations it supports are for arm64,
and it assumes a 64-bit little-endian target. If the latter limitation
is ever to be changed, we'll need a way to tell the tool what format
the image is in. Eventually this may be replaced by a tool that uses
libelf or similar and operates directly on the ELF file. I've written
some code for such an approach but libelf does not make it easy to poke
addresses by memory address (rather than by section), and I was
hesitant to write code to manually parse the program headers and do the
update outside of libelf (or to iterate over sections) -- especially
since it wouldn't get test coverage on things like binaries with
multiple PT_LOAD segments. This should be good enough for now to let
the manual relocation stuff be removed from the arm64 patches.

When variable size SPL is used, the BL1 expects the SPL to be
encapsulated differently: instead of putting the checksum at a fixed
offset in the SPL blob, prepend the blob with a header including the
size and the checksum.
The enhancements include
- adding a command line option, '--vs' to indicate the need for the
variable size encapsulation
- padding the fixed size encapsulated blob with 0xff instead of random
memory contents
- do not silently truncate the input file, report error instead
- no need to explicitly closing files/freeing memory, this all happens
on exit; removing cleanups it makes code clearer
- profuse commenting
- modify Makefile to allow enabling the new feature per board

Given a multi-file image created through the mkimage's -d option:
$ mkimage -A x86 -O linux -T multi -n x86 -d vmlinuz:initrd.img:System.map \
multi.img
Image Name: x86
Created: Thu Jul 25 10:29:13 2013
Image Type: Intel x86 Linux Multi-File Image (gzip compressed)
Data Size: 13722956 Bytes = 13401.32 kB = 13.09 MB
Load Address: 00000000
Entry Point: 00000000
Contents:
Image 0: 4040128 Bytes = 3945.44 kB = 3.85 MB
Image 1: 7991719 Bytes = 7804.41 kB = 7.62 MB
Image 2: 1691092 Bytes = 1651.46 kB = 1.61 MB
It is possible to perform the innverse operation -- extracting any file from
the image -- by using the dumpimage's -i option:
$ dumpimage -i multi.img -p 2 System.map
Although it's feasible to retrieve "data files" from image through scripting,
the requirement to embed tools such 'dd', 'awk' and 'sed' for this sole purpose
is cumbersome and unreliable -- once you must keep track of file sizes inside
the image. Furthermore, extracting data files using "dumpimage" tool is faster
than through scripting.

In order to avoid duplicating code and keep only one point of modification,
the functions, structs and defines useful for "dumpimage" were moved from
"mkimage" to a common module called "imagetool".
This modification also weakens the coupling between image types (FIT, IMX, MXS,
and so on) and image tools (mkimage and dumpimage). Any tool may initialize the
"imagetool" through register_image_tool() function, while the image types
register themselves within an image tool using the register_image_type()
function:
+---------------+
+------| fit_image |
+--------------+ +-----------+ | +---------------+
| mkimage |--------> | | <-----+
+--------------+ | | +---------------+
| imagetool | <------------| imximage |
+--------------+ | | +---------------+
| dumpimage |--------> | | <-----+
+--------------+ +-----------+ | +---------------+
+------| default_image |
+---------------+
register_image_tool() register_image_type()
Also, the struct "mkimage_params" was renamed to "image_tool_params" to make
clear its general purpose.

A common use-case is to build all boards for a particular SoC. This can
be achieved by:
./tools/buildman/buildman -b mainline_dev tegra20
However, when the SoC is a member of a family of SoCs, and each SoC has
a different name, it would be even more useful to build all boards for
every SoC in that family. This currently isn't possible since buildman's
board selection command-line arguments are compared to board definitions
using pure string equality.
To enable this, compare using a regex match instead. This matches
MAKEALL's handling of command-line arguments. This enables:
(all Tegra)
./tools/buildman/buildman -b mainline_dev tegra
(all Tegra)
./tools/buildman/buildman -b mainline_dev '^tegra.*$'

Normally, multiple public keys can be provided and U-Boot is not
required to use all of them for verification. This is because some
images may not be signed, or may be optionally signed.
But we still need a mechanism to determine when a key must be used.
This feature cannot be implemented in the FIT itself, since anyone
could change it to mark a key as optional. The requirement for
key verification must go in with the public keys, in a place that
is protected from modification.
Add a -r option which tells mkimage to mark all keys that it uses
for signing as 'required'.
If some keys are optional and some are required, run mkimage several
times (perhaps with different key directories if some keys are very
secret) using the -F flag to update an existing FIT.

This adds a userspace linux utility that writes the u-boot image to an mtd
partition on the docg4 nand flash.
A special utility is required to do this because u-boot is partially loaded by
an initial program loader (IPL) that is permanently programmed to the boot
region of the flash. This IPL expects the image to be written in a unique
format. The characteristics of this format can be summarized as follows:
- Flash blocks to be loaded must have a magic number in the oob bytes of the
first page of the block.
- Each page must be written redundantly in the subsequent page.
- The integrated flash controller's "reliable mode" is used, requiring that
alternate 2k regions (4 pages) are skipped when writing.
For these reasons, a u-boot image can not be written using nandwrite from
mtd-utils.

When building host utilities, we include libfdt.h from the host, not from
U-Boot. This in turn brings in libfdt_env.h from the host, which can mess
up the types and cause a build failure, depending on the host environment.
To fix this, force inclusion of U-Boot's libfdt_env.h so that the types
are correct.
Another way to fix this is to use -nostdinc and -idirafter to ensure that
system includes are included after U-Boot ones. Unfortunately this means
that U-Boot's errno.h gets included instead of the system one. This in
turn requires a hack to errno.h to redirect things, so all in all the
solution in this patch is probably cleaner.

Give more flexibility to define configs that can be interpreted by make, e.g. to
define fallback values of configs like in the example below.
Before this change, the config lines:
#define CONFIG_SPL_MAX_SIZE 2048
#define CONFIG_SPL_PAD_TO CONFIG_SPL_MAX_SIZE
would have been changed in autoconfig.mk into:
CONFIG_SPL_MAX_SIZE=2048
CONFIG_SPL_PAD_TO="CONFIG_SPL_MAX_SIZE"
Hence, a make recipe using as an argument to $(OBJCOPY):
--pad-to=$(CONFIG_SPL_PAD_TO)
would have issued:
--pad-to="CONFIG_SPL_MAX_SIZE"
which means nothing for $(OBJCOPY) and makes it fail.
Thanks to this change, the config lines above are changed in autoconfig.mk into:
CONFIG_SPL_MAX_SIZE=2048
CONFIG_SPL_PAD_TO=$(CONFIG_SPL_MAX_SIZE)
Hence, the make recipe above now issues:
--pad-to=2048
as expected from the defined config.

settings are "ignore_errors", "process_tags", and "verbose". You

Pull slightly modified version of Documentation/DocBook, the related perl
script scripts/kernel-doc and the scripts/docproc.c from Linux kernel and
implant it into U-Boot. This will allow smooth generation of kerneldoc
style documentation.
It was necessary to modify the DocBook/Makefile to work with U-Boot build
system. The changes were only minor though and involved replacing the kbuild
specific parts.
It was also necessary to replace use of variables like KERNEL_VERSION with
U_BOOT_VERSION, strings like Linux kernel with U-Boot Bootloader etc. so
the generated result actually matches.
Finally, it was necessary to adjust docproc.c, since the documentation in
U-Boot is located in doc/DocBook instead of Documentation/DocBook as is in
case of the Linux kernel.
Some parts of the DocBook Makefile are unused, but to allow easier sync with
Linux kernel, these parts are still left in. The targets enabled now are
"htmldocs" "pdfdocs" "psdocs" "xmldocs" and "cleandocs" to remove the results
of documentation build.

plain text lines. The only drawback I've found so far is the case
where you have a patch with someones else signoff but not yours and
also have to patman tags under signoff line. In this case you will
get extra empty line between signoffs.

Use the POSIX variant of basename due to BSD systems (e.g. OS X) do not provide
GNU version of basename(3). It is save to use the POSIX variant here cause we do
never use argv[0] later on which may be modified by the basename(3) POSIX
variant.
On systems providing GNU variant the GNU variant should be used since string.h
is included before libgen.h. Therefore let the _GNU_SOURCE as is.

What is this?
=============
This tool is a Python script which:
- Creates patch directly from your branch
- Cleans them up by removing unwanted tags
- Inserts a cover letter with change lists
- Runs the patches through checkpatch.pl and its own checks
- Optionally emails them out to selected people
It is intended to automate patch creation and make it a less
error-prone process. It is useful for U-Boot and Linux work so far,
since it uses the checkpatch.pl script.
It is configured almost entirely by tags it finds in your commits.
This means that you can work on a number of different branches at
once, and keep the settings with each branch rather than having to
git format-patch, git send-email, etc. with the correct parameters
each time. So for example if you put:
in one of your commits, the series will be sent there.
See the README file for full details.

The flash header supports different flash offsets for different
boot devices. E.g. parallel NOR or OneNAND use a different offset
than FLASH_OFFSET_STANDARD (== 0x400).
The flash offset is correctly read from the configuration in
parse_cfg_cmd(). But is then overwritten wrongly in set_imx_hdr_v1/2().
Fix this by removing this overwriting. Use the flash offset
correctly read from the configuration, instead.
If there is no flash_offset read from the configuration file, i.e.
the BOOT_FROM tag is missing, exit with an error message.

Several bugfixes have occurred upstream since this script was imported
into U-Boot. In particular, the script currently in U-Boot does not
describe commit f8bbb4dad0 correctly,
resulting in a version of "2011.09" instead of "2011.09-01460-gf8bbb4d".
With that commit checked out, the command "git name-rev --tags HEAD"
gives this result:
HEAD tags/v2011.12-rc1~30^2
Then the "changes" regex does not match because of the trailing '^2':
grep -E '^HEAD[[:space:]]+(.*~[0-9]*|undefined)$'
The new version of tools/setlocalversion in the kernel correctly handles
those situations by using different plumbing commands.
The version from the kernel is not directly usable as it does not append
the full GIT version that U-Boot expects unless the right config options
are set (CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO=y). Other than a few minor changes
for Kconfig, the imported version is very similar to Linux v3.2-rc4.

The legacy uImage format includes an absolute load and entry-point
address. When bootm operates on a kernel uImage in memory that isn't
loaded at the address in the image's load address, U-Boot will copy
the image to its address in the header.
Some kernel images can actually be loaded and used at any arbitrary
address. An example is an ARM Linux kernel zImage file. To represent
this capability, IH_TYPE_KERNEL_NOLOAD is implemented, which operates
just like IH_TYPE_KERNEL, except that the load address header is
ignored, and U-Boot does not copy the image to its load address, but
rather uses it in-place.
This is useful when sharing a single (uImage-wrapped) zImage across
multiple boards with different memory layouts; in this case, a specific
load address need not be picked when creating the uImage, but instead
is selected by the board-specific U-Boot environment used to load and
boot that image.

This fixes two bugs with comparison of redundant environment flags on
read.
flag0 and flag1 in fw_env_open() were declared signed instead of
unsigned char breaking BOOLEAN mode "== 0xFF" tests and in INCREMENTAL
mode the wrong environment would be chosen where the flag values are
127 and 128 (either way round). With both flags over 128, both signs
flipped and the logic worked by happy accident.
Also there was a logic bug in the INCREMENTAL test (after signedness was
fixed) in the case flag0=0, flag1=255, env 1 would be incorrectly chosen.
Fix both of these.

A recurrent issue is that certain C level constructs like sizeof() or
offsetof() cannot be used in assembler files, which is inconvenient
when such constructs are used in the definition of macro names etc.
To avoid duplication of such definitions (and thus another cause of
problems), we adapt the Linux way to automatically generate the
respective definitions from the respective C header files.
In Linux, this is implemented in include/linux/kbuild.h, Kbuild, and
arch/*/kernel/asm-offsets.c; we adapt the code from the Linux v2.6.36
kernel tree.
We also copy the concept of the include/generated/ directory which can
be used to hold other automatically generated files as well.
We start with an architecture-independent lib/asm-offsets.c which
generates include/generated/generic-asm-offsets.h (included by
include/asm-offsets.h, which is what will be referred to in the actual
source code). Later this may be extended by architecture-specific
arch/*/lib/asm-offsets.c files that will generate a
include/generated/asm-offsets.h.

"flat_dt". Commit 89a4d6b12f introduced a

Currently, some of the tools instead set CC to be HOSTCC in order to re-use
some pattern rules -- but this fails when the user overrides CC on the make
command line. Also, the HOSTCFLAGS in tools/Makefile are currently not
being used because config.mk overwrites them.
This patch adds static pattern rules for files that have been requested to
be built with the native compiler using $(HOSTSRCS) and $(HOSTOBJS), and
converts the tools to use them.
It restores easylogo to using the host compiler, which was broken by commit
38d299c2db (if this was an intentional change,
please let me know -- but it seems to be a build tool).
It restores -pedantic and the special flags for darwin and cygwin that were
requested in tools/makefile (but keeps the flags added by config.mk) --
hopefully someone can test this on those platforms. It no longer
conditionalizes -pedantic on not being darwin; it wasn't clear that that was
intentional, and unless there's a real problem it's just inviting people to
contribute non-pedantic patches to those files (I'm not a fan of -pedantic
personally, but if it's on for one platform it should be on for all).
HOST_LDFLAGS is renamed HOSTLDFLAGS for consistency with the previous
HOST_CFLAGS to HOSTCFLAGS rename. A new HOSTCFLAGS_NOPED is made available
for those files which currently cannot be built with -pedantic, and replaces
the old FIT_CFLAGS.
imls now uses the cross compiler properly, rather than by trying to
reconstruct CC using the typoed $(CROSS_COMPILER).
envcrc.c is now dependency-processed unconditionally -- previously it would
be built without being on (HOST)SRCS if CONFIG_ENV_IS_EMBEDDED was not
selected.

The env code is protected by the ENV_IS_EMBEDDED define, so attempting to
compile the code when this isn't defined is pointless. Now that the env
headers have unified around CONFIG_ENV_IS_EMBEDDED, convert the build
system to only build the env objects when this is enabled. And now that
the env code is conditionally compiled, we can drop the source code checks.
For people who want to extract the environment manually, add a new option
CONFIG_BUILD_ENVCRC that only enables the envcrc utility.

Signed-off-by: Mike Frysinger <vapier@gentoo.org>
The netcat utility likes to exit when it receives an empty packet (as it
thinks this means EOF). This can easily occur when working with command
line editing as this behavior will be triggered when using backspace. Or
with tabs and command line completion. So create two netcat processes -
one to only listen (and put it into a loop), and one to do the sending.
Once the user quits the transmitting netcat, the listening one will be
killed automatically.

This is a first step towards reorganizing the mkimage code to make it
easier to add support for additional images types. Current mkimage
code is specific to generating uImage and FIT image files, but the
same framework can be used to generate other image types like
Kirkwood boot images (kwbimage-TBD). For this, the mkimage code gets
reworked:
Here is the brief plan for the same:-
a) Split mkimage code into core and image specific support
b) Implement callback functions for image specific code
c) Move image type specific code to respective C files
Currently there are two types of file generation/list
supported (i.e uImage, FIT), the code is abstracted from
mkimage.c/.h and put in default_image.c and fit_image.c;
all code in these file is static except init function call
d) mkimage_register API is added to add new image type support
All above is addressed in this patch
e) Add kwbimage type support to this new framework (TBD)
This will be implemented in a following commit.

In addition to the changes for CONFIG_ENV_IS_IN_FLASH as done in

Since commit a706bfc7 common/env_embedded.o and tools/envcrc were
only built when CONFIG_ENV_IS_EMBEDDED was set, but this breaks
building for many boards.
We always have to build these files when CONFIG_ENV_IS_IN_FLASH is
set.

Add support for compiling the host tools in the tools directory using
the MinGW toolchain. This produces executables which can be used on
standard Windows computers without requiring cygwin.
One must specify the MinGW compiler and strip utilities as if they
were the host toolchain in order to build win32 executables, eg:
make HOSTCC=i586-mingw32msvc-gcc HOSTSTRIP=i586-mingw32msvc-strip tools

crc32.c uses the zlib.h header in include/u-boot/zlib.h. The symlink
was previously necessary to give U-Boot's version of zlib.h precedence
over the host computer's version of zlib.h.

Split variable declarations into multiple lines and use the standard
VAR-y convention. Also move object and binary variable declarations to
after config.mk has been included to allow for these lists to utilize
the CONFIG_XXX variables.
These changes lay the groundwork for conditional compilation of files
in the tools directory.

Some images can be quite large, so add an option to compress the
image data with gzip in the U-Boot image. Then at runtime, the
board can decompress it with the normal zlib functions.

The 'license' command includes the U-Boot license (GPLv2) into the
actual bootloader binary. The license text can be shown interactively
at the U-Boot commandline.
For products where the commandline can actually be accessed by the
end user, this helps to prevent inadvertent GPL violations, since the
GPLv2 license text can no longer be 'forgotten' to be included into
the product.
The 'license' command can be enabled by CONFIG_CMD_LICENSE.

In the current top-of-tree, 1.3.3.-rc2, the optional tool
'tools/env/fw_printenv' fails to compile for two reasons:
1) The header watchdog.h cannot be found.
2) The header zlib.h is picked up from the tool chain rather than the
project causing a prototype conflict for crc32.
This patch addresses both of these issues.

The mmap() related code is full of inconsistent casts/constants when
it comes to error checking, and may break when building on some
systems (like ones that do not implicitly define the caddr_t type).
Let's just avoid the whole mess by writing the code nice and clean in
the first place.

The envcrc.c does sizeof(unsigned long) when calculating the crc, but
this is done with the build toolchain instead of the target tool
chain, so if the build is a 64bit system but the target is 32bits,
the size will obviously be wrong. This converts all unsigned long
stuff related to crc32 to uint32_t types. Compile tested only: output
of ./tools/envcrc when run on a 32bit build system matches that of a
64bit build system.

and to see how much has been changed since the referenced tag.

Support for the new uImage format (FIT) is added to mkimage tool.
Commandline syntax is appropriately extended:
mkimage [-D dtc_options] -f fit-image.its fit-image
mkimage (together with dtc) takes fit-image.its and referenced therein
binaries (like vmlinux.bin.gz) as inputs, and produces fit-image file -- the
final image that can be transferred to the target (e.g., via tftp) and then
booted using the bootm command in U-Boot.

the '+' operator. It isn't on FreeBSD. The attach patch implements the
equivalent, using the '*' operator instead and should work everywhere.

This patch allows u-boot to build without error in a cygwin
environment. Cygwin does not define __u64 in it's
include/asm/types.h file. The -idirafter flag in the u-boot
build causes the inclusion of the cygwin types.h file as opposed
to u-bot/include/asm/types.h file which does define __u64.

headers. Along with this a number of warnings are fixed.

Modifications are based on the linux kernel approach and
support two use cases:
1) Add O= to the make command line
'make O=/tmp/build all'
2) Set environement variable BUILD_DIR to point to the desired location
'export BUILD_DIR=/tmp/build'
'make'
The second approach can also be used with a MAKEALL script
'export BUILD_DIR=/tmp/build'
'./MAKEALL'
Command line 'O=' setting overrides BUILD_DIR environent variable.
When none of the above methods is used the local build is performed and
the object files are placed in the source directory.

Patches by Richard Klingler, June 11th 2005:
As done in the linux kernel, the U-Boot version (U_BOOT_VERSION)
of all unreleased (untagged) U-Boot images will be automatically
extended upon compiletime with a part of the GIT commit ID and
possibly with "dirty" if uncommited changes are detected.
Here an example for the resulting version:
"U-Boot 1.1.4-g3457ac18-dirty"
The version is now maintained in the toplevel Makefile and the
version headers are autogenerated.
