08fcdd332f Makefile: Fix 'clean' target
Now that we have removed the DocBook files we need to not try and clean
that directory.

78a88f7930 doc: Replace DocBook with sphinx-based docs
The Linux kernel moved to sphinx-based documentation and got rid of the
DocBook based documentation quite a while ago. Hence, the DocBook
documentation for U-Boot should be converted as well.

To achieve this, import the necessary files from Linux v4.17, and
convert the current DocBook documentation (three files altogether) to
sphinx/reStructuredText.

For now, all old DocBook documentation was merged into a single
handbook, tentatively named "U-Boot Hacker Manual".

For some source files, the documentation style was changed to comply
with kernel-doc; no functional changes were applied.

421be6fca5 Makefile: drop mention of *.cfgtmp
Since commit f916757300 (imx: Create distinct pre-processed mkimage
config files), *.cfgtmp files are no longer generated. There is no need
to remove them on the 'clean' target anymore.

Rename the .gitignore glob to *.cfgout.

Commit e19b0fb485 (kbuild: generate u-boot.cfg as a byproduct of
include/autoconf.mk) removed the use of the cpp_cfg macro in Makefile,
but forgot to remove its definition.

fa893990e9 Makefile: Ensure we build with -std=gnu11
As many targets are now commonly built with gcc-6 or later (which
defaults to a newer C standard than older compilers), certain C
constructs are now being used as they produce more readable code. And
while all compilers that we support building with support the C11
standard (and GNU11) they do not default to that standard. Ensure that
we pass along -std=gnu11 when building.

e91610da7c kconfig: re-sync with Linux 4.17-rc4
Align Kconfig to Linux 4.17-rc4 with minimal impact on non-kconfig files.

Previous Kconfig sync was done by commit bf7ab1e70f ("kconfig:
re-sync with Linux 4.10") and it achieved almost perfect alignment with
a few (intended) exceptions, caused by below U-boot commits:

[A] v2015.04 5f9eb22075 ("kbuild: remove scripts/multiconfig.sh")
[B] v2015.07 20c20826ef ("Kconfig: Enable usage of escape char '\' in string values")
[C] v2016.01 da58dec866 ("Various Makefiles: Add SPDX-License-Identifier tags")
[D] v2016.03 5b8031ccb4 ("Add more SPDX-License-Identifier tags")
[E] v2016.03 192bc6948b ("Fix GCC format-security errors and convert sprintfs.")

Here is the list of Kconfig commits which followed the v4.10 alignment:

[F] v2018.01 0931ed3c0d ("kconfig/symbol.c: use correct pointer type argument for sizeof")
[G] v2018.03 1414e09b4f ("kconfig: revert change that was not needed for -Wformat-security")
[H] v2018.05 83d290c56f ("SPDX: Convert all of our single license tags to Linux Kernel style")

Commit [F] was subsequently applied to Linux kernel as commit [I]
with the same patch id, so it won't contribute to further misalignment.

[I] v4.15-rc1 88127dae6ed9 ("kconfig/symbol.c: use correct pointer type argument for sizeof")

Commit [G] is a Kconfig-specific revert of commit [E].
Commit [H] relocated and reformatted the license doing no functional change.

In summary, the only functional change that makes U-boot Kconfig
diverge from Linux Kconfig is commit [B]. After a brief analysis,
the purpose of [B] seems to be placing "\n" literals in string symbols
like CONFIG_AUTOBOOT_PROMPT="autoboot in %d seconds\n" in order to pass
them directly to printf and expect correct output at runtime. Currently,
Linux doesn't seem to have this requirement, so for the moment [B] looks
like a U-boot specific feature/fix. From point of view of further Kconfig
alignment and backporting efforts, it is highly desired that commits
like [B] are propagated to Linux and any Kconfig fixes/features are
contributed to Linux kernel first. This specific Kconfig re-sync just
keeps [B] in place.

Contrary to 4.10 Kconfig re-sync (which achieves zero non-kconfig
changes), 4.17-rc4 re-sync does some amount of updates in Kbuild
(striving to keep them at minimum), due to a number of reasons:
* Kbuild is affected by the removal of Kconfig "*shipped" files and now
requires flex and bison pre-installed on the host.
* PYTHON{2,3} variables are defined in top-level Makefile as
prerequisite for running the newly developed Kconfig unit tests.
* silentoldconfig becomes an "internal implementation detail" deprecated
for external use, being renamed to syncconfig.

The exact non-kconfig files touched by this commit are:

$ git show --format="" --stat -- ':!scripts/kconfig'
 .gitignore             |  2 ++
 Makefile               |  9 +++++++--
 scripts/Makefile.build | 11 +++++++++++
 scripts/Makefile.lib   | 41 ++++++++++++-----------------------------

The imported Linux commits touching the above files are:

e9781b52d4e0e3 H ("kbuild: add PYTHON2 and PYTHON3 variables")

The commits marked with 'H' are assessed as "hard" (build will fail)
prerequisites and the rest of them are assessed as "soft" prerequisites
for the re-sync. In spite of relatively high number of non-H commits,
they belong to this Kconfig update topic-wise and decrease the number of
cherry pick conflicts for many commits in this series. Additional effort
can be put in eliminating the soft prerequisites, if really needed.

The commits which contributed to this Kconfig re-sync are listed below.

sometimes automatically by git), it is revealed by the '!' sign in the

The current Kconfig update generates below build-time warnings:
  YACC scripts/dtc/dtc-parser.tab.h
scripts/dtc/dtc-parser.y: warning: 3 shift/reduce conflicts [-Wconflicts-sr]
  YACC scripts/dtc/dtc-parser.tab.c
scripts/dtc/dtc-parser.y: warning: 3 shift/reduce conflicts [-Wconflicts-sr]

This seems to happen because the Kbuild updates apparently didn't make
room for both "*shipped"-based builds and flex/bison-based builds. A
similar problem has been reported for genksyms parser in v4.17-rc1
commit 833e622459432e ("genksyms: generate lexer and parser during build
instead of shipping"). I have figured out empirically that the warnings
are healed after updating the in-tree U-boot DTC to upstream v1.4.6-9,
same as done by Linux v4.17-rc1 commit 9130ba88464032 ("scripts/dtc:
Update to upstream version v1.4.6-9-gaadd0b65c987"). Whether fixing the
DTC-related yacc warnings should be done together with the Kconfig
re-sync, I would like to hear from community.

My testing was limited to:
- make defconfig all
- make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=aarch64-linux-gnu- r8a7795_ulcb_defconfig all
- comparing .config before and after the re-sync
- running the newly imported Kconfig unit tests as seen below:

9de4f95929 Makefile: adopt --std=gnu11 for HOSTCFLAGS on Linux
Following the conversion of the SPDX license tags, a number of files
compiled with -pedantic now generate warnings similar to the following
for using C99-style '//' comments in ISO C90 code:

tools/gen_eth_addr.c:1:1: warning: C++ style comments are not allowed in ISO C90
   // SPDX-License-Identifier: GPL-2.0+
   ^

The SPDX comment-style change means that these files have adopted C99,
so need to change the language-standard to --std=gnu99 or --std=gnu11
to let the compiler know this.

As we now require GCC 6 or newer for the cross-compiler, the project has
implicitly moved the project to GNU11: let older GCC versions on various
Linux distros know to treat our host tools as GNU11 as well.

83d290c56f SPDX: Convert all of our single license tags to Linux Kernel style
When U-Boot started using SPDX tags we were among the early adopters and
there weren't a lot of other examples to borrow from. So we picked the
area of the file that usually had a full license text and replaced it
with an appropriate SPDX-License-Identifier: entry. Since then, the
Linux Kernel has adopted SPDX tags and they place it as the very first
line in a file (except where shebangs are used, then it's second line)
and with slightly different comment styles than us.

In part due to community overlap, in part due to better tag visibility
and in part for other minor reasons, switch over to that style.

This commit changes all instances where we have a single declared
license in the tag as both the before and after are identical in tag
contents. There's also a few places where I found we did not have a tag
and have introduced one.

1eb2e71edd kbuild: use -fmacro-prefix-map to make __FILE__ a relative path
The __FILE__ macro is used everywhere in U-Boot to locate the file
printing the log message, such as WARN_ON(), etc. If U-Boot is
built out of tree, this can be a long absolute path.

This is because Kbuild runs in the objtree instead of the srctree,
then __FILE__ is expanded to a file path prefixed with $(srctree)/.

A brand-new option from GCC, -fmacro-prefix-map, solves this problem.
If your compiler supports it, __FILE__ is the relative path from the
srctree regardless of O= option. This provides more readable log,
more reproducible builds, and smaller image size.

0658761733 Makefile: always preserve output for images that can contain HAB Blocks
The current makefile logic disables creation of the
SPL.log/u-boot-ivt.img.log etc. files when V=1 is given on the command
line, the rationale presumably being that the user wants and gets the
information on the console.

However, from general principles, I don't think a higher V= level
should affect which build artifacts get generated (and certainly
shouldn't produce fewer). Concretely, it's also a problem that when
doing a V=1 build in a terminal, the relevant HAB blocks lines easily
drown in all the other V=1 output.

Moreover, build systems such as Yocto by default pass V=1, so in that
case the information gets hidden away in the do_compile log file, making
it nigh impossible to create a recipe for creating signed U-boot images
- I don't want to disable V=1, because having verbose output in the log
file is valuable when things go wrong, but OTOH trying to go digging in
the do_compile log file (and getting exactly the right lines) is not
pleasant to even think about.

So change the logic so that for V=0, the mkimage output is redirected
to MKIMAGEOUTPUT (which is also the current behaviour), while for any
other value of V, we _additionally_ write the information to make's
stdout, whatever that might be.

f3d8f7dd73 Allow providing default environment from file
Modifying the default environment via CONFIG_EXTRA_ENV_SETTINGS is
somewhat inflexible, partly because the cpp language does not allow
appending to an existing macro. This prevents reuse of "environment
fragments" for different boards, which in turn makes maintaining that
environment consistently tedious and error-prone.

This implements a Kconfig option for allowing one to define the entire
default environment in an external file, which can then, for example, be
generated programmatically as part of a Yocto recipe, or simply be kept
in version control separately from the U-boot repository.

948071bab4 Makefile: Disable stack-usage check for ARC
With the most recent tools for ARC (arc-2017.09) in case of

That happens because the compiler doesn't handle "naked" functions
as a special case where stack calculation shouldn't be done.

But for now until this is fixed in GCC to get clean buildman output
we're disabling stack-usage check for ARC.

1022807c21 Makefile: Don't mess with .text section location for selected arches
Most of architectures have .text section situated in the very beginning
of U-Boot binary and thus it is very logical that CONFIG_SYS_TEXT_BASE
is used on final linkage step to specify where U-Boot gets linked to.

For that we pass the following construction to the LD:
---------------------------->8-----------------------
xxx-ld ... -Ttext $(CONFIG_SYS_TEXT_BASE) ...
---------------------------->8-----------------------

But there could be exceptions. For example:
 1. In case of ARCv2 we want to put vectors table in its own section
.ivt in front of .text section which means we need either add an
offset to CONFIG_SYS_TEXT_BASE to compensate for .ivt or don't
pass "-Ttext" to the LD at all and specify link base in linker
    script directly.

 2. Some architectures even though have .text section in the very
beginning of the U-Boot image still use different symbols to
    specify link-base:
       * NIOS2: CONFIG_SYS_MONITOR_BASE (which I really like because
that exactly what makes sense - where out image starts but not
beginning of its .text section which just happened to match the
         whole image beginning)
       * EXTENSA: CONFIG_SYS_TEXT_ADDR
       * X86: Which doesn't use CONFIG_SYS_MONITOR_BASE in case of EFI
otherwise sets explicit link base in u-boot.lds

I think that's good to allow for flexibility and don't require each and
every architecture or even platform to specify CONFIG_SYS_TEXT_BASE as well
as use it to set .text section location.

So let's only pass "-Ttext xxx" for those architectures who don't set
link-base explicitly in their linker scripts.

Update tegra to use binman for image creation. This still includes the

dd2081a8e4 Makefile: Correct SPL/TPL/DTB build race condition
When building on a multi-core machine for an SPL-enabled board that
also uses CONFIG_OF_EMBED, the following error can be encountered
due to a race condition:

make[3]: *** No rule to make target 'spl/dts/dt.dtb.o', needed by
    'spl/dts/built-in.o'. Stop.
../scripts/Makefile.spl:364: recipe for target 'spl/dts' failed
  make[2]: *** [spl/dts] Error 2
make[2]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....

A reliable way to trigger this race condition is to add "sleep 60" to
the end of the "arch-dtbs" rule's recipe in "dts/Makefile" and to build
U-Boot against a board which uses the CONFIG_OF_EMBED and CONFIG_SPL
options using "make -j8" or a similar command.

This commit corrects this race condition via the use of CONFIG_OF_EMBED
in the same way that commit 3c00a2c8b5 ("Makefile: Correct dependency
race condition with TPL") and commit 054b3a1e80 ("dm: Makefile: Build
of-platdata before SPL") use CONFIG_OF_SEPARATE.

d6a0c78a4e pylibfdt: compile pylibfdt only when dtoc/binman is necessary
Currently, pylibfdt is always compiled if swig is installed on your

x86, sunxi, rockchip) do not use dtoc or binman.

"checkbinman" and "checkdtoc" are wrong. It is odd that the final
build stage checks if we have built necessary tools. If your platform
depends on dtoc/binman, you must be able to build pylibfdt. If swig
is not installed, it should fail immediately.

I added PYLIBFDT, DTOC, BINMAN entries to Kconfig. They should be
property select:ed by platforms that need them. Kbuild will descend

15b97f5c5e pylibfdt: move pylibfdt to scripts/dtc/pylibfdt and refactor makefile
The pylibfdt is used by dtoc (and, indirectly by binman), but there
is no reason why it must be generated in the tools/ directory.

Recently, U-Boot switched over to the bundled DTC, and the directory
structure under scripts/dtc/ now mirrors the upstream DTC project.
So, scripts/dtc/pylibfdt is the best location.

I also rewrote the Makefile in a cleaner Kbuild style.

The scripts from the upstream have been moved as follows:

  lib/libfdt/pylibfdt/setup.py -> scripts/dtc/pylibfdt/setup.py
  lib/libfdt/pylibfdt/libfdt.i -> scripts/dtc/pylibfdt/libfdt.i_shipped

The .i_shipped is coped to .i during building because the .i must be
located in the objtree when we build it out of tree.

3809e30273 Makefile: honor PYTHON configuration properly
On some systems `python` is `python3` (for instance, Archlinux). The
`PYTHON` variable can be used to point to `python2` to have a successful
build.

The use of `PYTHON` is currently limited in the Makefile and needs to be
extended in other places:

First, pylibfdt is required to be a Python 2 binding (binman imports
pylibfdt and is only compatible Python 2), so its setup.py needs to be
called accordingly. An alternative would be to change the libfdt
setup.py shebang to python2, but the binding is actually portable. Also,
it would break on system where there is no such thing as `python2`.

Secondly, the libfdt import checks need to be done against Python 2 as
well since the Python 2 compiled modules (in this case _libdft.so) can
not be imported from Python 3.

Note on the libfdt imports: "@if ! PYTHONPATH=tools $(PYTHON) -c 'import
libfdt'; then..." is probably simpler than the currently sub-optimal
pipe.

For the RK3368, we want to use OF_PLATDATA in TPL, but full OF_CONTROL

Consequently, Makefile.spl needs to be adjusted to test for these

Some platforms require more complex U-Boot images than we can easily

Introduce a CONFIG_SPL_FIT_SOURCE and CONFIG_SPL_FIT_GENERATOR symbol,
which can either hold an .its source file describing the image layout,
or, in the second case, a generator tool (script) to create such
a source file. This script gets passed the list of device tree files
from the CONFIG_OF_LIST variable.
A platform or board can define either of those in their defconfig file

d726f225f5 cmd: rework "license" command
The previous commit ("add a new command to show .config contents")
improves the basic infrastructure of "embed a compressed file into
the U-Boot image, and print it by a command". The same pattern for
the "license" command.

This commit reworks the command to improve the following:

[1] Improve log style

Kbuild style log

  GZIP cmd/license_data.gz
  CHK cmd/license_data_gz.h
  UPD cmd/license_data_gz.h
  CHK cmd/license_data_size.h
  UPD cmd/license_data_size.h

instead of the bare Make log:

cat ./Licenses/gpl-2.0.txt | gzip -9 -c | \
		tools/bin2header license_gzip > ./include/license.h

[2] Collect related code into the "cmd" directory

Prior to this commit, the license.h was created by tools/Makefile,
placed under the "include" directory, included from cmd/license.c,
and deleted by the top-level Makefile. It is not a good idea to
scatter related code.

[3] Drop the fixed-malloc size LICENSE_MAX

Just allocate the minimum required size of buffer because we know
the size of the original gpl-2.0.txt.

[4] Fix more issues

Terminate the buffer with zero to prevent puts() from over-running.
Add "static" to do_license.

61304dbec3 cmd: add a new command "config" to show .config contents
This feature is inspired by /proc/config.gz of Linux. In Linux,
if CONFIG_IKCONFIG is enabled, the ".config" file contents are
embedded in the kernel image. If CONFIG_IKCONFIG_PROC is also
enabled, the ".config" contents are exposed to /proc/config.gz.
Users can do "zcat /proc/config.gz" to check which config options
are enabled on the running kernel image.

The idea is almost the same here; if CONFIG_CMD_CONFIG is enabled,
the ".config" contents are compressed and saved in the U-Boot image,
then printed by the new command "config".

The usage is quite simple. Enable CONFIG_CMD_CONFIG, then run
 > config
from the command line interface. The ".config" contents will be
printed on the console.

This feature increases the U-Boot image size by about 4KB (this is
mostly due to the gzip-compressed .config file). By default, it is
enabled only for Sandbox because we do not care about the memory
footprint on it. Of course, this feature is architecture agnostic,
so you can enable it on any board if the image size increase is
acceptable for you.

d21bd69b6e tools: mkimage: add firmware-ivt image type for HAB verification
When we want to use Secure Boot with HAB from SPL over U-Boot.img,
we need to append the IVT to the image and leave space for the CSF.
Images generated as firmware_ivt can directly be signed using the
Freescale code signing tool. For creation of a CSF, mkimage outputs
the correct HAB Blocks for the image.
The changes to the usual firmware image class are quite small,
that is why I implemented that directly into the default_image.

e19b0fb485 kbuild: generate u-boot.cfg as a byproduct of include/autoconf.mk
Our build system still parses ad-hoc CONFIG options in header files
and generates include/autoconf.mk so that Makefiles can reference
them. This gimmick was introduced in the pre-Kconfig days and will
be kept until Kconfig migration is completed.

The include/autoconf.mk is generated like follows:

  [1] Preprocess include/common.h with -DDO_DEPS_ONLY and
      retrieve macros into include/autoconf.mk.tmp
  [2] Reformat include/autoconf.mk.dep into include/autoconf.mk
      with tools/scripts/define2mk.sed script
  [3] Remove include/autoconf.mk.tmp

Here, include/autoconf.mk.tmp is similar to u-boot.cfg, which is
also generated by preprocessing include/config.h with -DDO_DEPS_ONLY.
In other words, there is much overlap among include/autoconf.mk and
u-boot.cfg build rules.

So, the idea is to split the build rule of include/autoconf.mk
into two stages. The first preprocesses headers into u-boot.cfg.
The second parses the u-boot.cfg into include/autoconf.mk. The
build rules of u-boot.cfg in Makefile and spl/Makefile will be gone.

a6c1309782 Makefile: rm u-boot.cfg dependencies are missing
Prior to the previous patch, a freshly created .u-boot.cfg.cmd may not
correctly represent all dependencies for u-boot.cfg. The previous change
only solved this issue for fresh builds; when performing an incremental
build, the deficient .u-boot.cfg.cmd is already present, so u-boot.cfg
is not rebuilt, and hence .u-boot.cfg.cmd is not rebuilt with the correct
content.

Solve this by explicitly detecting when the dependency file .u-boot.cfg.d
has not been integrated into .u-boot.cfg.cmd, and force u-boot.cfg to be
rebuilt in this case by deleting it first. This is possible since
if_changed_dep will always delete .u-boot.cfg.d when it executes
successfully, so its presence means either that the previous build was
made by a source tree that contained a Makefile that didn't include the
previous patch, or that the build failed part way through executing
if_changed_dep for u-boot.cfg. Forcing a rebuild of u-boot.cfg is required
in the former case, and will cause no additional work in the latter case,
since the file would be rebuilt anyway for the same reason it was being
rebuilt by the previous build.

fcd29a4d0e Makefile: use if_change_dep for u-boot.cfg
cmd_cpp_cfg generates a dependency output, but because it's invoked using
if_changed rather than if_changed_dep, that dependency file is ignored.
This results in Kbuild not knowing about which files u-boot.cfg depends
on, so it may not be rebuilt when required.

A practical result of this is that u-boot.cfg may continue to reference
CONFIG_ options that no longer exist in the source tree, and this can
cause the adhoc config options check to fail.

This change modifies Makefile to use if_changed_dep, which in turn causes
all dependencies to be known to the next make invocation.

15b51878be Makefile: remove BUILD_TAG from KBUILD_CFLAGS
If BUILD_TAG is part of KBUILD_CFLAGS, then any time the value changes,
all files get rebuilt. In a continuous integration environment, the value
will change every build. This wastes time, assuming that incremental
builds would otherwise occur.

To solve this, remove BUILD_TAG from KBUILD_CFLAGS and add it to CFLAGS
for just the one file that uses it. This does have the disadvantage that
if any other files want to use the flag, we'll need to duplicate this
custom CFLAGS setup logic. However, it seems unlikely we'll need this.

An alternative would be to add BUILD_TAG to the "local version" and remove
the special case code from display_options.c. However, that would affect
the format of the U-Boot signon message, which may negatively affect
people looking for specific data there. The approach of using
file-specific CFLAGS was suggested by Masahiro Yamada.

ad1ecd2063 fdt: Build a U-Boot binary without device tree
At present u-boot.bin holds the plain U-Boot binary without the device tree.
This is somewhat annoying since you need either u-boot.bin or u-boot-dtb.bin
depending on whether device tree is used.

Adjust the build such that u-boot.bin includes a device tree (if enabled),
and the plain binary is in u-boot-nodtb.bin. For now u-boot-dtb.bin remains
the same.

This should be acceptable since:

- without OF_CONTROL, u-boot.bin still does not include a device tree
- with OF_CONTROL, u-boot-dtb.bin does not change

The main impact is build systems which are set up to use u-boot.bin as
the output file and then add a device tree. These will have to change to use
u-boot-nodtb.bin instead.

Adjust tegra rules so it continues to produce the correct files.

There are a lot of unrelated files in common, including all of the commands.
Moving them into their own directory makes them easier to find and is more
logical.

Some commands include non-command code, such as cmd_scsi.c. This should be

the associated command.

Unfortunately, with m68k I get this error:

This patch adds runtime detection of the Marvell UART boot-mode (xmodem
protocol). If this boot-mode is detected, SPL will return to the

With this patch its now possible, to generate a U-Boot image that
can be booted either from the strapped boot-device (e.g. SPI NOR, MMC,
etc) or via the xmodem protocol from the UART. In the UART case,
the kwboot tool will dynamically insert the UART boot-device type
into the image. And also patch the load address in the header, so
that the mkimage header will be skipped (as its not expected by the
Marvell BootROM).

This simplifies the development for Armada XP / 38x based boards.
As no special images need to be generated by selecting the
MVEBU_BOOTROM_UARTBOOT Kconfig option.

Since the Kconfig option MVEBU_BOOTROM_UARTBOOT is not needed any
more, its now completely removed.

b098032387 x86: ifdtool: Support collating microcode into one place
The Intel Firmware Support Package (FSP) requires that microcode be provided
very early before the device tree can be scanned. We already support adding
a pointer to the microcode data in a place where early init code can access.

However this just points into the device tree and can only point to a single
lot of microcode. For boards which may have different CPU types we must
support multiple microcodes and pass all of them to the FSP in one place.

Enhance ifdtool to scan all the microcode, place it together in the ROM and
update the microcode pointer to point there. This allows us to pass multiple
microcode blocks to the FSP using its existing API.

Enable the flag in the Makefile so that this feature is used by default for

In order to achieve reproducible builds in U-Boot, timestamps that are defined

Simply by setting SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH to a fixed value, a number of targets can be

1fddd7b63c tools/imagetool: remove linker script
Commit a93648d197 introduced linker generated
lists for imagetool which is the base for some host tools (mkimage, dumpimage,
et al.). Unfortunately some host tool chains do not support the used type of
linker scripts. Therefore this commit broke these host-tools for them, namely
FreeBSD and Darwin (OS/X).

This commit tries to fix this. In order to have a clean distinction between host
and embedded code space we need to introduce our own linker generated list
instead of re-using the available linker_lists.h provided functionality. So we
copy the implementation used in linux kernel script/mod/file2alias.c which has
the very same problem (cause it is a host tool). This code also comes with an
abstraction for Mach-O binary format used in Darwin systems.

3ff291f371 kconfig: convert Kconfig helper script into a shell script
Commit 51148790 added scripts/multiconfig.py written in Python 2
to adjust Kconfig for U-Boot.

It has been hard for Python 3 users because Python 2 and Python 3
are not compatible with each other.

We are not happy about adding a new host tool dependency
(in this case, Python version dependency) for the core build process.
After some discussion, we decided to use only basic tools.

The script may get a bit more unreadable by shell scripting,
but we believe it is worthwhile.

In addition, this commit revives "<board>_config" target that is
equivalent to "<board>_defconfig" for backwards compatibility.
It is annoying to adjust various projects which use U-Boot.

e773440425 kbuild: sync mixed targets handling with Linux 3.16

Having such code in scripts/Makefile.build results in the same flags

51148790f2 kconfig: switch to Kconfig
This commit enables Kconfig.
Going forward, we use Kconfig for the board configuration.
mkconfig will never be used. Nor will include/config.mk be generated.

Kconfig must be adjusted for U-Boot because our situation is
a little more complicated than Linux Kernel.
We have to generate multiple boot images (Normal, SPL, TPL)
from one source tree.
Each image needs its own configuration input.

Usage:

Run "make <board>_defconfig" to do the board configuration.

It will create the .config file and additionally spl/.config, tpl/.config
if SPL, TPL is enabled, respectively.

You can use "make config", "make menuconfig" etc. to create
a new .config or modify the existing one.

Use "make spl/config", "make spl/menuconfig" etc. for spl/.config
and do likewise for tpl/.config file.

The generic syntax of configuration targets for SPL, TPL is:

  <target_image>/<config_command>

Here, <target_image> is either 'spl' or 'tpl'
<config_command> is 'config', 'menuconfig', 'xconfig', etc.

When the configuration is done, run "make".
(Or "make <board>_defconfig all" will do the configuration and build
in one time.)

For futher information of how Kconfig works in U-Boot,
please read the comment block of scripts/multiconfig.py.

By the way, there is another item worth remarking here:
coexistence of Kconfig and board herder files.

Prior to Kconfig, we used C headers to define a set of configs.

We expect a very long term to migrate from C headers to Kconfig.
Two different infractructure must coexist in the interim.

In our former configuration scheme, include/autoconf.mk was generated
for use in makefiles.
It is still generated under include/, spl/include/, tpl/include/ directory
for the Normal, SPL, TPL image, respectively.

9262233a96 Makefile: fix clang warnings due to clang support
Building u-boot tools with clang as a host compiler e.g. on
FreeBSD with `gmake HOSTCC=clang CONFIG_USE_PRIVATE_LIBGCC=y tools`
leads to many warnings [1] for every compiler invocation since
commit 598e2d33. Part of mentioned commit imports linux patches:

 - kbuild: LLVMLinux: Adapt warnings for compilation with clang
 - kbuild: LLVMLinux: Add Kbuild support for building kernel with Clang

No version of clang supports the gcc fno-delete-null-pointer-checks
though, but it is only passed to clang. Gcc does not have the clang
specific Qunused-arguments for the target. Furthermore several
warnings are disabled which aren't encountered in u-boot. Since such
a build has worked for quite some time and works after removing these
changes, just remove the clang specific handling to restore normal
building with clang as hostcc.

[1] Actual warnings
-------------------
  GEN include/autoconf.mk.dep

2405d09c4c build: support a new image u-boot-dtb.img
In SPL framework, SPL uses u-boot.img to load u-boot.bin.
Here,
    u-boot.img = uImage header + u-boot.bin

To use OF control with a separate devicetree,
u-boot.dtb must be placed right after u-boot.bin.
In this case, u-boot-dtb.bin is generally used.
Here,
    u-boot-dtb.bin = u-boot.bin + u-boot.dtb

We need u-boot-dtb.img to use both SPL framework
and separate OF control at the same time.
    u-boot-dtb.img = uImage header + u-boot-dtb.bin

For example, Zynq boards already define all of
  - CONFIG_SPL
  - CONFIG_OF_CONTROL
  - CONFIG_OF_SEPARATE

So, the support of u-boot-dtb.img is urgent.

replaced CONFIG_SPL_MAX_SIZE by CONFIG_SPL_MAX_FOOTPRINT. However,
CONFIG_SPL_MAX_SIZE is used in the Makefile for padding the SPL
when preparing an u-boot.ais image. By removing CONFIG_SPL_MAX_SIZE
said commits broke the ais image of the da850evm and cam_enc_4xx
configurations.

This patch converts the u-boot.ais target to use CONFIG_SPL_PAD_TO

a #define CONFIG_SPL_PAD_TO where it is required.

65bb6d8dee kbuild: build with -Werror=date-time if the compiler supports it
Using __DATE__, __TIME__ would make the build non-deterministic.

If the code needs to refer to build date/time, use U_BOOT_DATE and
U_BOOT_TIME in include/generated/timestamp_autogenerated.h instead.

This commit has been imported from Linux Kernel,
which should be applied to U-Boot too:

    commit fe7c36c7bde12190341722af69358e42171162f3
    Author: Josh Triplett <josh@joshtriplett.org>

Makefile: Build with -Werror=date-time if the compiler supports it

GCC 4.9 and newer have a new warning -Wdate-time, which warns on any use
of __DATE__, __TIME__, or __TIMESTAMP__, which would make the build
non-deterministic. Now that the kernel does not use any of those
macros, turn on -Werror=date-time if available, to keep it that way.

The kernel already (optionally) records this information at build time
in a single place; other kernel code should not duplicate that.

794d5f5540 Revert "build: Use filechk rules to create and update u-boot.lds"
This reverts commit a8b993eb81.

Commit a8b993eb claims it fixes u-boot.lds rule by replacing
$(call if_changed) with $(call filechk).

But the problem had already been fixed by commit 395e60cd
a few days before commit a8b993eb was posted.

There is no reason to apply commit a8b993eb. What is worse is
$(call filechk) is too strong to fix the problem and looks weird.

1a9df13d5b arm: mxs: Add support for generating signed BootStream
This patch adds the groundwork for generating signed BootStream, which
can be used by the HAB library in i.MX28. We are adding a new target,
u-boot-signed.sb , since the process for generating regular non-signed
BootStream is much easier. Moreover, the signed bootstream depends on
external _proprietary_ _binary-only_ tool from Freescale called 'cst',
which is available only under NDA.

To make things even uglier, the CST or HAB mandates a kind-of circular
dependency. The problem is, unlike the regular IVT, which is generated
by mxsimage, the IVT for signed boot must be generated by hand here due
to special demands of the CST. The U-Boot binary (or SPL binary) and IVT
are then signed by the CST as a one block. But here is the problem. The
size of the entire image (U-Boot, IVT, CST blocks) must be appended at
the end of IVT. But the size of the entire image is not known until the
CST has finished signing the U-Boot and IVT. We solve this by expecting
the CST block to be always 3904B (which it is in case two files, U-Boot
and the hand-made IVT, are signed in the CST block).
