[`useless_vec`]: lint on `vec![_]` invocations that adjust to a slice
Fixes#2262 (well, actually my PR over at #10901 did do most of the stuff, but this PR implements the one last other case mentioned in the comments that my PR didn't fix)
Before this change, it would lint `(&vec![1]).iter().sum::<i32>()`, but not `vec![1].iter().sum::<i32>()`. This PR handles this case.
This also refactors a few things that I wanted to do in my other PR but forgot about.

Don't linting `as_conversions` in proc macros
Don't linting `as_conversions` if code was generated by procedural macro.

I implemented the fix changing the lint code to be a `LateLintPass` in order to be able to use the `is_from_proc_macro` out of the box. If the reviwer thinks that it would be better to do the other way (implementing `WithSearchPat`) just let me know. I might need some help in implementing it for the `ustc_ast::ast::Expr`

Add `needless_if` lint
first off: Sorry about the large diff. Seems a ton of tests do this (understandably so).
this is basically everything I wanted in #10868, while it doesn't lint *all* unnecessary empty blocks, it lints needless if statements; which are basically the crux of the issue (for me) anyway. I've committed code that includes this far too many times 😅 hopefully clippy can help me out soon

handle exponent without digits in `numeric_literal`
Fixes#10912
The numeric literal util module didn't check for exponents with no digits.
So:
384cf37612/clippy_utils/src/numeric_literal.rs (L163-L168)
`exponent` here would be the empty string, which passed the `!= "0"` check (when it shouldn't have, it should probably be treated as if the user wrote `E0`), then later fails when counting the digits and subtracting one (0 - 1 = overflow).
Also, interestingly I can't even write a test for this because exponents with no digits is some kind of error by itself and `cargo dev fmt` fails on it.

[`unnecessary_to_owned`]: check that the adjusted type matches target
Fixes#10033.
Before this change, the lint would assume that removing the `.to_string()` in `f(&x.to_string())` would be ok if x is of some type that implements `Deref<Target = str>` and `f` takes a `&str`.
This turns out to not actually be ok if the `to_string` call is some method that exists on `x` directly, which happens if it implements `Display`/`ToString` itself.

[`redundant_closure`]: special case inclusive ranges
Fixes#10684.
`x..=y` ranges need a bit of special handling in this lint because it desugars to a call to the lang item `RangeInclusiveNew`, where the callee span would be the same as the range expression itself, so the suggestion looked a bit weird. It now correctly suggests `RangeInclusive::new`.

[`useless_vec`]: lint `vec!` invocations when a slice or an array would do
First off, sorry for that large diff in tests. *A lot* of tests seem to trigger the lint with this new change, so I decided to `#![allow()]` the lint in the affected tests to make reviewing this easier, and also split the commits up so that the first commit is the actual logic of the lint and the second commit contains all the test changes. The stuff that changed in the tests is mostly just line numbers now. So, as large as the diff looks, it's not actually that bad. 😅
I manually went through all of these to find out about edge cases and decided to put them in `tests/ui/vec.rs`.
For more context, I wrote about the idea of this PR here: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust-clippy/issues/2262#issuecomment-1579155257 (that explains the logic)
Basically, it now also considers the case where a `Vec` is put in a local variable and the user only ever does things with it that one could also do with a slice or an array. This should catch a lot more cases, and (at least from looking at the tests) it does.
changelog: [`useless_vec`]: lint `vec!` invocations when a slice or an array would do (also considering local variables now)
`suspicious_else_formatting`: Don't warn if there is a comment between else and curly bracket
This PR fixes https://github.com/rust-lang/rust-clippy/issues/10273

consider autoderef through user-defined `Deref` in `eager_or_lazy`
Fixes#10462
This PR handles autoderef in the `eager_or_lazy` util module and stops suggesting to change lazy to eager if autoderef in an expression goes through user defined `Deref` impls, e.g.
```rs
struct S;
impl Deref for S {
type Target = ();
fn deref(&self) -> &Self::Target { &() }
}
let _ = Some(()).as_ref().unwrap_or_else(|| &S); // autoderef `&S` -> `&()`
Add redundant type annotations lint
Hello, I'm trying to add the `redundat_type_annotations` lint.
It's still WIP but I'd like to start gathering some feedbacks to be sure that I'm not doing things 100% wrong :)
Right now it still misses lints like:
- [x] `let foo: u32 = 5_u32`,
- [x] `let foo: String = STest2::func()`
- [x] `let foo: String = self.func()` (`MethodCall`)
- [x] refs
- [ ] Generics
I've some problems regarding the second example above, in the `init` part of the `Local` I have:
```rust
init: Some(
Expr {
hir_id: HirId(DefId(0:24 ~ playground[e1bd]::main).58),
kind: Call(
Expr {
hir_id: HirId(DefId(0:24 ~ playground[e1bd]::main).59),
kind: Path(
TypeRelative(
Ty {
hir_id: HirId(DefId(0:24 ~ playground[e1bd]::main).61),
kind: Path(
Resolved(
None,
Path {
span: src/main.rs:77:21: 77:27 (#0),
res: Def(
Struct,
DefId(0:17 ~ playground[e1bd]::STest2),
),
segments: [
PathSegment {
ident: STest2#0,
hir_id: HirId(DefId(0:24 ~ playground[e1bd]::main).60),
res: Def(
Struct,
DefId(0:17 ~ playground[e1bd]::STest2),
),
args: None,
infer_args: true,
},
],
},
),
),
span: src/main.rs:77:21: 77:27 (#0),
},
PathSegment {
ident: get_numb#0,
hir_id: HirId(DefId(0:24 ~ playground[e1bd]::main).62),
res: Err,
args: None,
infer_args: true,

),
),
span: src/main.rs:77:21: 77:37 (#0),
},
[],
),
span: src/main.rs:77:21: 77:39 (#0),
},
),
```
And I'm not sure how to get the return type of the function `STest2::func()` since the resolved path `DefId` points to the struct itself and not the function. Do you have any idea on how I could get this information in this case?
Thanks!
[`unnecessary_lazy_eval`]: don't lint on types with deref impl
Fixes#10437.
This PR changes clippy's util module `eager_or_lazy` to also consider deref expressions whose type has a non-builtin deref impl and not suggest replacing it as that might have observable side effects.
A prominent example might be the `lazy_static` macro, which creates a newtype with a `Deref` impl that you need to go through to get access to the inner value. Going from lazy to eager can make a difference there.
Ignore fix for `from_over_into` if the target type contains a `Self` reference
Fixes https://github.com/rust-lang/rust-clippy/issues/10838.
This is my first time contributing here, and the fix is kind of ugly.
I've worked a bit with `quote` and was trying to figure out a way to replace the type in a better way than just a raw string-replace but couldn't quite figure out how to.
The only thing really required to fix this, is to replace all `Self` references with the type stated in the `from` variable, this isn't entirely simple to do with raw strings without creating a mess though.
We need to find and replace all `Self`'s in a variable with `from` but there could be an arbitrary amount, in a lot of different positions. As well as some type that contains the name self, like `SelfVarSelf` which shouldn't be replaced.
The strategy is essentially, if `"Self"` is surrounded on both sides by something that isn't alphanumeric, then we're golden, then trying to make that reasonably efficient.
I would not be offended if the solution is too messy to accept!
changelog: [from_over_into]: Replace Self with the indicated variable in suggestion and fix.
new lint: `explicit_into_iter_fn_arg`
Fix missing block for unsafe code
If a block is declared as unsafe, it needs an extra layer of curly braces around it.
Fixes#10808
This code adds handling for `UnsafeSource::UserProvided` block, i.e. `unsafe { ... }`. Note that we do not handle the `UnsafeSource::CompilerGenerated` as it seems to not be possible to generate that with the user code (?), or at least doesn't seem to be needed to be handled explicitly.
There is an issue with this code: it does not add an extra indentation for the unsafe blocks. I think this is a relatively minor concern for such an edge case, and should probably be done by a separate PR (fixing compile bug is more important than getting styling perfect especially when `rustfmt` will fix it anyway)
```rust

resolve: Pre-compute non-reexport module children
Instead of repeating the same logic by walking HIR during metadata encoding.
The only difference is that we are no longer encoding `macro_rules` items, but we never currently need them as a part of this list. They can be encoded separately if this need ever arises.
`module_reexports` is also un-querified, because I don't see any reasons to make it a query, only overhead.

Remove `box_syntax`
r? `@Nilstrieb`
This removes the feature `box_syntax`, which allows the use of `box <expr>` to create a Box, and finalises removing use of the feature from the compiler. `box_patterns` (allowing the use of `box <pat>` in a pattern) is unaffected.
It also removes `ast::ExprKind::Box` - the only way to create a 'box' expression now is with the rustc-internal `#[rustc_box]` attribute.
As a temporary measure to help users move away, `box <expr>` now parses the inner expression, and emits a `MachineApplicable` lint to replace it with `Box::new`
Closes#49733
Strengthen state tracking in const-prop
Some/many of the changes are replicated between both the const-prop lint and the const-prop optimization.
Behaviour changes:
- const-prop opt does not give a span to propagated values. This was useless as that span's primary purpose is to diagnose evaluation failure in codegen.
- we remove the `OnlyPropagateInto` mode. It was only used for function arguments, which are better modeled by a write before entry.
- the tracking of assignments and discriminants make clearer that we do nothing in `NoPropagation` mode or on indirect places.
Add utility macros to help with writing tests.
Adds two utility macros to help with testing:
* `external` expands to it's argument tokens, but makes them appear to come from an external macro. Helps make tests for `in_external_macro` much more readable.
* `inline_macros` is an attribute macro which allows the use of a pseudo `inline!` macro which expands to it's argument tokens, but makes them appear to be from a crate-local macro expansion. This removes the need to write `macro_rules` boilerplate when testing how lints interact with macros.
---
`external`'s usage is simple. `external!(struct Foo { x: u32});` will make the struct appear as though it came from an external macro. Individual tokens can be escaped if needed. `external!($x + 0 / 10)` will make everything except `x` appear as though it came from an external macro. Can also use `$literal` and `$(tokens...)` as well.
---
`inline_macros` is more complicated due to compiler constraints. Given:
```rust
#[inline_macros]
fn foo() {
inline!(5 + 5 / 10);
}
```
`inline!(5 + 5 / 10)` will be replace with a call to a generated macro which expands to the contained tokens.
Tokens can be escaped by prefixing them with `$`:
```rust
#[inline_macros]
fn foo() {
let x = 5;
inline!($x + 5 / $10);
}
```
This will pass `x` as an `ident` argument and `10` as a `literal` argument.
Token sequences can also be passed with `$(...)`:
```rust
#[inline_macros]
fn foo() {
let mut x = 5;
inline!(if $(x >= 5) {
$x = 5;
});
}
```
This will pass `x >= 5` as `tt` arguments, and `x` as an `ident` argument.
---
Not 100% sure `inline_macros` is actually worth having. It does make the tests a little easier to read once you're used to it and it becomes more useful once there are multiple macro tests. The verbosity of declaring single use macros starts to hurt at that point.

manual_let_else: do not suggest semantically different replacements
The problem is that this lint does not consider the possibility that the divergent branch can come first and that the patterns may overlap. This led to incorrect suggestions, previously registered as correct in the tests themselves:
```rust
let v = match build_enum() {
_ => continue,
Variant::Bar(v) | Variant::Baz(v) => v,
};
```
had a `let Variant::Bar(v) | Variant::Baz(v) = v else { continue; }` suggestion, which is obviously wrong as the original code `continue`s in any case. Issue #10241 gives another example.
The code now checks that the divergent branch comes second. It could be extended later (I've added a TODO) to check for non-overlapping patterns.

Render missing generics suggestion verbosely
It's a bit easier to read like this, especially ones that are appending new generics onto an existing list, like ": `, T`" which render somewhat poorly inline.
Also don't suggest `dyn` as a type parameter to add, even if technically that's valid in edition 2015.
Whne SYSROOT is defined, clippy-driver will insert a --sysroot argument
when calling rustc. However, when a sysroot argument is already defined,
e.g. through RUSTFLAGS=--sysroot=... the `cargo clippy` call would
error. This tests that the sysroot argument is only passed once and that
SYSROOT is ignored in this case.
This is useful for rust-lang/rust to allow setting a sysroot that's
*only* for build scripts, different from the regular sysroot passed in
RUSTFLAGS (since cargo doesn't apply RUSTFLAGS to build scripts or
proc-macros).
That said, the exact motivation is not particularly important: this
fixes a regression from
5907e9155e (r1060215684).
Note that only RUSTFLAGS is tested in the new integration test; passing
--sysroot through `clippy-driver` never worked as far as I can tell, and
no one is using it, so I didn't fix it here.

[`drop_ref`]: don't lint idiomatic in match arm
fixes#10122
As established in issue #9482, it is idiomatic to use a single `drop()` expression in a match arm to achieve a side-effect of a function while discarding its output. This should also apply to cases where the function returns a reference.
The change to the lint's code was less than 1 line, because all the heavy lifting was done in PR #9491.

Make the iter_kv_map lint handle ref/mut annotations.
For the degenerate (`map(|(k, _)| k)`/`map(|(_, v)| v)`) cases a mut annotation is superfluous and a ref annotation won't compile, so no additional handling is required. For cases where the `map` call must be preserved ref/mut annotations should also be presereved so that the map body continues to work as expected.

fix incorrect suggestion in `suboptimal_flops`
fixes#10003
There was an error when trying to negate an expression like `x - 1.0`. We used to format it as `-x - 1.0` whereas a proper negation would be `-(x - 1.0)`.
Therefore, we add parentheses around the expression when it is `ExprKind::Binary`.
We also add parentheses around multiply and divide expressions, even though this is not strictly necessary.

Add size_of_ref lint
This addresses #9995, which is likely raising a valid point about `std::mem::size_of_val()`: It's [very easy to use double-references as the argument](https://github.com/apache/arrow-datafusion/pull/4371#discussion_r1032385224), which the function will happily accept and give back the size of _the reference_, not the size of the value _behind_ the reference. In the worst case, if the value matches the programmer's expectation, this seems to work, while in fact, everything will go horribly wrong e.g. on a different platform.
The size of a `&T` is independent of what `T` is, and people might want to use `std::mem::size_of_val()` to actually get the size of _any_ reference (e.g. via `&&()`). I would rather suggest that this is always bad behavior, though ([instead](https://doc.rust-lang.org/reference/type-layout.html#pointers-and-references-layout), [and](https://doc.rust-lang.org/stable/std/primitive.usize.html#associatedconstant.BITS)). I, therefore, put this lint into `correctness`.
Since the problem is usually easily fixed by removing extra `&`, I went light on suggesting code.

Improve `possible_borrower`
This PR makes several improvements to `clippy_uitls::mir::possible_borrower`. These changes benefit both `needless_borrow` and `redundant clone`.
1. **Use the compiler's `MaybeStorageLive` analysis**
I could spot not functional differences between the one in the compiler and the one in Clippy's repository. So, I removed the latter in favor of the the former.
2. **Make `PossibleBorrower` a dataflow analysis instead of a visitor**
The main benefit of this change is that allows `possible_borrower` to take advantage of statements' relative locations, which is easier to do in an analysis than in a visitor.
This is easier to illustrate with an example, so consider this one:
```rust
fn foo(cx: &LateContext<'_>, lint: &'static Lint) {
cx.struct_span_lint(lint, rustc_span::Span::default(), "", |diag| diag.note(&String::new()));
// ^
}
```
We would like to flag the `&` pointed to by the `^` for removal. `foo`'s MIR begins like this:
```rust
fn span_lint::foo::{closure#0}(_1: [closure@$DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:68: 396:74], _2: &mut rustc_errors::diagnostic_builder::DiagnosticBuilder<'_, ()>) -> &mut rustc_errors::diagnostic_builder::DiagnosticBuilder<'_, ()> {
debug diag => _2; // in scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:69: 396:73
let mut _0: &mut rustc_errors::diagnostic_builder::DiagnosticBuilder<'_, ()>; // return place in scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:75: 396:75
let mut _3: &mut rustc_errors::diagnostic_builder::DiagnosticBuilder<'_, ()>; // in scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:75: 396:100
let mut _4: &mut rustc_errors::diagnostic_builder::DiagnosticBuilder<'_, ()>; // in scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:75: 396:100
let mut _5: &std::string::String; // in scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:85: 396:99
let _6: std::string::String; // in scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:86: 396:99
StorageLive(_4); // scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:75: 396:100
_4 = &mut (*_2); // scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:75: 396:100
StorageLive(_5); // scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:85: 396:99
StorageLive(_6); // scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:86: 396:99
_6 = std::string::String::new() -> bb1; // scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:86: 396:99
// mir::Constant
// + span: $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:86: 396:97
// + literal: Const { ty: fn() -> std::string::String {std::string::String::new}, val: Value(<ZST>) }
}
bb1: {
_5 = &_6; // scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:85: 396:99
_3 = rustc_errors::diagnostic_builder::DiagnosticBuilder::<'_, ()>::note::<&std::string::String>(move _4, move _5) -> [return: bb2, unwind: bb4]; // scope 0 at $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:75: 396:100
// mir::Constant
// + span: $DIR/needless_borrow.rs:396:80: 396:84
// + literal: Const { ty: for<'a> fn(&'a mut rustc_errors::diagnostic_builder::DiagnosticBuilder<'_, ()>, &std::string::String) -> &'a mut rustc_errors::diagnostic_builder::DiagnosticBuilder<'_, ()> {rustc_errors::diagnostic_builder::DiagnosticBuilder::<'_, ()>::note::<&std::string::String>}, val: Value(<ZST>) }
}
```
The call to `diag.note` appears in `bb1` on the line beginning with `_3 =`. The `String` is owned by `_6`. So, in the call to `diag.note`, we would like to know whether there are any references to `_6` besides `_5`.
The old, visitor approach did not consider the relative locations of statements. So all borrows were treated the same, *even if they occurred after the location of interest*.
For example, before the `_3 = ...` call, the possible borrowers of `_6` would be just `_5`. But after the call, the possible borrowers would include `_2`, `_3`, and `_4`.
So, in a sense, the call from which we are try to remove the needless borrow is trying to prevent us from removing the needless borrow(!).
With an analysis, things do not get so muddled. We can determine the set of possible borrowers at any specific location, e.g., using a `ResultsCursor`.
3. **Change `only_borrowers` to `at_most_borrowers`**
`possible_borrowers` exposed a function `only_borrowers` that determined whether the borrowers of some local were *exactly* some set `S`. But, from what I can tell, this was overkill. For the lints that currently use `possible_borrower` (`needless_borrow` and `redundant_clone`), all we really want to know is whether there are borrowers *other than* those in `S`. (Put another way, we only care about the subset relation in one direction.) The new function `at_most_borrowers` takes this more tailored approach.
4. **Compute relations "on the fly" rather than using `transitive_relation`**
The visitor would compute and store the transitive closure of the possible borrower relation for an entire MIR body.
But with an analysis, there is effectively a different possible borrower relation at each location in the body. Computing and storing a transitive closure at each location would not be practical.
So the new approach is to compute the transitive closure on the fly, as needed. But the new approach might actually be more efficient, as I now explain.
In all current uses of `at_most_borrowers` (previously `only_borrowers`), the size of the set of borrowers `S` is at most 2. So you need only check at most three borrowers to determine whether the subset relation holds. That is, once you have found a third borrower, you can stop, since you know the relation cannot hold.
Note that `transitive_relation` is still used by `clippy_uitls::mir::possible_origin` (a kind of "subroutine" of `possible_borrower`).

Identify more cases of useless `into_iter()` calls
changelog: Sugg: [`useless_conversion`]: Now suggests removing calls to `into_iter()` on an expression implementing `Iterator`
[#10020](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust-clippy/pull/10020)
<!-- changelog_checked -->
If the type of the result of a call to `IntoIterator::into_iter()`
and the type of the receiver are the same, then the receiver
implements `Iterator` and `into_iter()` is the identity function.
The call to `into_iter()` may be removed in all but two cases:
- If the receiver implements `Copy`, `into_iter()` will produce
a copy of the receiver and cannot be removed. For example,
`x.into_iter().next()` will not advance `x` while `x.next()` will.
- If the receiver is an immutable local variable and the call to
`into_iter()` appears in a larger expression, removing the call to
`into_iter()` might cause mutability issues. For example, if `x`
is an immutable local variable, `x.into_iter().next()` will
compile while `x.next()` will not as `next()` receives
`&mut self`.

Fixes#10065
There used to be a logical bug where IncrementVisitor would
completely stop checking an expression/block after seeing a continue
statement. This led to issue #10058 where a variable incremented

considered incremented only once.
The solution is to continue scanning the expression after seeing a
`continue` statement, but increment self.depth so that the Visitor
thinks that the rest of the loop is within a conditional.

Fix 10021
This PR proposes a fix for #10021.
The problem is similar to the one that `@mikerite` described in #9505. The compiler is generating an empty substitution for a call, even though the type of `Self` seems to be needed for a predicate. In `@mikerite's` case, the call was to [`IntoFuture::into_future`](https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/future/trait.IntoFuture.html#tymethod.into_future). In this case, the call is to [`Try::branch`](https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/ops/trait.Try.html#tymethod.branch).
The proposed fix is to verify that the parameter whose type is changing has an index within the substitution. The strikes me as a reasonable approach, since if the check were to fail, the following code would be a no-op:
4c123a06ba/clippy_lints/src/methods/unnecessary_to_owned.rs (L420-L428)

Previously, async constructs would be lowered to "normal" generators,
with an additional `from_generator` / `GenFuture` shim in between to
convert from `Generator` to `Future`.
The compiler will now special-case these generators internally so that
async constructs will *directly* implement `Future` without the need
to go through the `from_generator` / `GenFuture` shim.
The primary motivation for this change was hiding this implementation
detail in stack traces and debuginfo, but it can in theory also help
the optimizer as there is less abstractions to see through.

The issue also affects references and tuples, though I had to patch the standard library with non-trait methods for those types to test that. Just in case, I also included handling for `!`, since it appeared to be possible to call methods on it with angle brackets. I just couldn't verify the resulting suggestion, since dead-code analysis eliminates the code first.
This is my first exposure to Rust compiler internals, so please let me know if I'm taking the wrong approach here!

Add new lint [`misnamed-getters`]
```
changelog: Add new lint [`misnamed-getters`]
```
Closes#9769
The current lint matches all methods with a body of just one expression under the form `(&mut?)? <expr>.field` where field doesn't match the name of the method but there is a field of the same type in `<expr>` that matches the name. This allows matching nested structs, for example for newtype wrappers. This may cast the net a bit too wide and cause false positives. I'll run [clippy_lint_tester](https://github.com/mikerite/clippy_lint_tester) on the top crates to see how frequently false positives happen.
There also may be room for improvement by checking that the replacement field would work taking into account implementations of `Deref` and `DerefMut` even if the types don't exactly match but I don't know yet how this could be done.

This PR makes them preserve as the original notation.

Return multiple resolutions from `def_path_res`
Changes `def_path_res` to return all the resolutions matching the path rather than the first one (with a namespace hint that covered some cases). This would fix any issues that come up with multiple versions of the same crate being present as they all have the same crate name
It also adds resolution of `impl _ {}` items for local items, and removes struct field resolution as it didn't seem to be used anywhere
I tested it on a local crate and it worked for the multiple crate issue, but I couldn't come up with a test that worked well with `// aux-build`, maybe `// aux-crate` after https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/103266 could work but I'm not sure on that either

Clippy has an internal lint that checks for the usage of hardcoded def
paths and suggests to replace them with a lang or diagnostic item, if
possible. This was implemented with a hack, by getting all the variants
of the `LangItem` enum and then index into it with the position of the
`LangItem` in the `items` list. This is no longer possible, because the
`items` list can't be accessed anymore.
Introduced an ignored_ids parameter.
Takes O(n^2) time in the worst case.
Can be changed to collect block ids in first phase,
and then filter with binary search in second.
feat: lint unchecked subtraction of a 'Duration' from an 'Instant'
Hello all, I tried to tackle the open issue #9371 and this is what I came up with.
I have a difficulty currently - some tests are failing:
```
failures:
[ui] ui/manual_instant_elapsed.rs
```
The `manual_instant_elapsed` is failing because of `Instant::now() - duration` test, this now gets also picked by `unchecked_duration_subtraction` lint.
What is the correct way to proceed in this case? Simply update the `.stderr` file for `manual_instant_elapsed` lint?

After chatting with a few folks, it seems like `needless_collect` is giving false positives pretty regularly (https://github.com/rust-lang/rust-clippy/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+needless_collect). We're big supporters of clippy in Nushell, and it's one of the passes we require for CI, but we've had to disable this particular lint. Perhaps it should be moved to the nursery until it's improved?

Track where diagnostics were created.
This implements the `-Ztrack-diagnostics` flag, which uses `#[track_caller]` to track where diagnostics are created. It is meant as a debugging tool much like `-Ztreat-err-as-bug`.

```rust
struct B;
fn main(){
let _: A = B;
}
```
...now emits the following error message:

Improve `needless_lifetimes`
This PR makes the following improvements to `needless_lifetimes`.
* It fixes the following false negative, where `foo` is flagged but `bar` is not:
```rust
fn foo<'a>(x: &'a u8, y: &'_ u8) {}
fn bar<'a>(x: &'a u8, y: &'_ u8, z: &'_ u8) {}
```
* It flags more cases, generally. Previously, `needless_borrow` required *all* lifetimes to be used only once. With the changes, individual lifetimes are flagged for being used only once, even if not all lifetimes are.
* Finally, it tries to produce more clear error messages.

Uplift `clippy::for_loops_over_fallibles` lint into rustc
This PR, as the title suggests, uplifts [`clippy::for_loops_over_fallibles`] lint into rustc. This lint warns for code like this:
```rust
for _ in Some(1) {}
for _ in Ok::<_, ()>(1) {}
```
i.e. directly iterating over `Option` and `Result` using `for` loop.
There are a number of suggestions that this PR adds (on top of what clippy suggested):
1. If the argument (? is there a better name for that expression) of a `for` loop is a `.next()` call, then we can suggest removing it (or rather replacing with `.by_ref()` to allow iterator being used later)
```rust
for _ in iter.next() {}
// turns into
for _ in iter.by_ref() {}
```
2. (otherwise) We can suggest using `while let`, this is useful for non-iterator, iterator-like things like [async] channels
```rust
for _ in rx.recv() {}
// turns into
while let Some(_) = rx.recv() {}
```
3. If the argument type is `Result<impl IntoIterator, _>` and the body has a `Result<_, _>` type, we can suggest using `?`
```rust
for _ in f() {}
// turns into
for _ in f()? {}
```
4. To preserve the original behavior and clear intent, we can suggest using `if let`
```rust
for _ in f() {}
// turns into
if let Some(_) = f() {}
```
(P.S. `Some` and `Ok` are interchangeable depending on the type)
I still feel that the lint wording/look is somewhat off, so I'll be happy to hear suggestions (on how to improve suggestions :D)!

Further enhance `needless_borrow`, mildly refactor `redundant_clone`
This PR does the following:
* Moves some code from `redundant_clone` into a new `clippy_utils` module called `mir`, and wraps that code in a function called `dropped_without_further_use`.
* Relaxes the "is copyable" condition condition from #9136 by also suggesting to remove borrows from values dropped without further use. The changes involve the just mentioned function.
* Separates `redundant_clone` into modules.
Strictly speaking, the last bullet is independent of the others. `redundant_clone` is somewhat hairy, IMO. Separating it into modules makes it slightly less so, by helping to delineate what depends upon what.
I've tried to break everything up into digestible commits.

I've added the lint to the complexity section for now, I don't know if every new lint needs to go in nursery first.
The matching could be expanded to more than `Some(<value>)` to lint on arbitrary struct matching inside the `Some` but I've left it like it was for `manual_map` for now. `needless_match::pat_same_as_expr` provides a more generic match example.

Fix and improve `match_type_on_diagnostic_item`
This extracts the fix for the lint out of #7647. There's still a couple of other functions to check, but at least this will get lint working again.
The two added util functions (`is_diagnostic_item` and `is_lang_item`) are needed to handle `DefId` for unit and tuple struct/variant constructors. The `rustc_diagnostic_item` and `lang` attributes are attached to the struct/variant `DefId`, but most of the time they are used through their constructors which have a different `DefId`. The two utility functions will check if the `DefId` is for a constructor and switch to the associated struct/variant `DefId`.
There does seem to be a bug on rustc's side where constructor `DefId`s from external crates seem to be returning `DefKind::Variant` instead of `DefKind::Ctor()`. There's a workaround put in right.

[Arithmetic] Consider literals
Fixes https://github.com/rust-lang/rust-clippy/issues/9307 and makes the `arithmetic` lint behave like `integer_arithmetic`.

Suggest `unwrap_or_default` when closure returns `"".to_string`
Closes https://github.com/rust-lang/rust-clippy/issues/9420

`BindingAnnotation` refactor
* `ast::BindingMode` is deleted and replaced with `hir::BindingAnnotation` (which is moved to `ast`)
* `BindingAnnotation` is changed from an enum to a tuple struct e.g. `BindingAnnotation(ByRef::No, Mutability::Mut)`
* Associated constants added for convenience `BindingAnnotation::{NONE, REF, MUT, REF_MUT}`
One goal is to make it more clear that `BindingAnnotation` merely represents syntax `ref mut` and not the actual binding mode. This was especially confusing since we had `ast::BindingMode`->`hir::BindingAnnotation`->`thir::BindingMode`.
I wish there were more symmetry between `ByRef` and `Mutability` (variant) naming (maybe `Mutable::Yes`?), and I also don't love how long the name `BindingAnnotation` is, but this seems like the best compromise. Ideas welcome.
Unlike past similar work done in #6228, expand the existing `or_fun_call`
lint to detect `or_insert` calls with a `T::new()` or `T::default()`
argument, much like currently done for `unwrap_or` calls. In that case,
suggest the use of `or_default`, which is more idiomatic.
Note that even with this change, `or_insert_with(T::default)` calls
aren't detected as candidates for `or_default()`, in the same manner
that currently `unwrap_or_else(T::default)` calls aren't detected as
candidates for `unwrap_or_default()`.
Also, as a nearby cleanup, change `KNOW_TYPES` from `static` to `const`,
since as far as I understand it's preferred (should Clippy have a lint
for that?).
Fixes#3812.
Fixes#9351.
Note that this commit reworks that fix for #9317. The change
is to check that the type implements `AsRef<str>` before regarding
`to_string` as an equivalent of `to_owned`. This was suggested
by Jarcho in the #9317 issue comments.
The benefit of this is that it moves some complexity out of
`check_other_call_arg` and simplifies the module as a whole.
Fix `mut_mutex_lock` when Mutex is behind immutable deref
I *think* the problem here is the `if let ty::Ref(_, _, Mutability::Mut) = cx.typeck_results().expr_ty(recv).kind()` line tries to check if the `Mutex` can be mutably borrowed (there already is a test for `Arc<Mutex<_>>`), but gets bamboozled by the `&mut Arc` indirection. And I *think* checking the deref-adjustment to filter immutable-adjust (the deref through the `Arc`, starting from `&mut Arc`) is the correct fix.

Implemented `suspicious_to_owned` lint to check if `to_owned` is called on a `Cow`
changelog: Add lint ``[`suspicious_to_owned`]``
-----------------
Hi,
posting this unsolicited PR as I've been burned by this issue :)
Being unsolicited, feel free to reject it or reassign a different lint level etc.
This lint checks whether `to_owned` is called on `Cow<'_, _>`. This is done because `to_owned` is very similarly named to `into_owned`, but the effect of calling those two methods is completely different (one makes the `Cow::Borrowed` into a `Cow::Owned`, the other just clones the `Cow`). If the cow is then passed to code for which the type is not checked (e.g. generics, closures, etc.) it might slip through and if the cow data is coming from an unsafe context there is the potential for accidentally cause undefined behavior.
Even if not falling into this painful case, there's really no reason to call `to_owned` on a `Cow` other than confusing people reading the code: either `into_owned` or `clone` should be called.
Note that this overlaps perfectly with `implicit_clone` as a warning, but `implicit_clone` is classified pedantic (while the consequences for `Cow` might be of a wider blast radius than just pedantry); given the overlap, I set-up the lint so that if `suspicious_to_owned` triggers `implicit_clone` will not trigger. I'm not 100% sure this is done in the correct way (I tried to copy what other lints were doing) so please provide feedback on it if it isn't.

This is done because `to_owned` is very similarly named to `into_owned`, but the

confusion (stemming from the ambiguity of the 'owned' term in the context of
`Cow`s) and might not be what the writer intended.

Rework `only_used_in_recursion`
fixes#8782fixes#8629fixes#8560fixes#8556
This is a complete rewrite of the lint. This loses some capabilities of the old implementation. Namely the ability to track through tuple and slice patterns, as well as the ability to trace through assignments.
The two reported bugs are fixed with this. One was caused by using the name of the method rather than resolving to the `DefId` of the called method. The second was cause by using the existence of a cycle in the dependency graph to determine whether the parameter was used in recursion even though there were other ways to create a cycle in the graph.
Implementation wise this switches from using a visitor to walking up the tree from every use of each parameter until it has been determined the parameter is used for something other than recursion. This is likely to perform better as it avoids walking the entire function a second time, and it is unlikely to walk up the HIR tree very much. Some cases would perform worse though.

There appear to be two contributing factors:
- Some packages in `ui_cargo` could have a `publish = false` added to them.
- Some packages in `ui_cargo` seem to be inconsistently named.
The new test checks that each package in the `ui_cargo` directory has a name matching one of its parent directories, and `publish = false` in its metadata (with a few exceptions).
Note that the packages in `cargo_common_metadata` require special care because `publish` is the subject of some of the `cargo_common_metadata` tests.
Also note that this PR adds `walkdir` as a dev dependency to the `clippy` package. However, it was already a dependency of `clippy_dev` and `lintcheck`. So hopefully this is acceptable.
Our continued thanks for making `clippy_utils` available, BTW. :)

Remove migrate borrowck mode
Closes#58781Closes#43234
# Stabilization proposal
This PR proposes the stabilization of `#![feature(nll)]` and the removal of `-Z borrowck`. Current borrow checking behavior of item bodies is currently done by first infering regions *lexically* and reporting any errors during HIR type checking. If there *are* any errors, then MIR borrowck (NLL) never occurs. If there *aren't* any errors, then MIR borrowck happens and any errors there would be reported. This PR removes the lexical region check of item bodies entirely and only uses MIR borrowck. Because MIR borrowck could never *not* be run for a compiled program, this should not break any programs. It does, however, change diagnostics significantly and allows a slightly larger set of programs to compile.
Tracking issue: #43234
RFC: https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/blob/master/text/2094-nll.md
Version: 1.63 (2022-06-30 => beta, 2022-08-11 => stable).
## Motivation
Over time, the Rust borrow checker has become "smarter" and thus allowed more programs to compile. There have been three different implementations: AST borrowck, MIR borrowck, and polonius (well, in progress). Additionally, there is the "lexical region resolver", which (roughly) solves the constraints generated through HIR typeck. It is not a full borrow checker, but does emit some errors.
The AST borrowck was the original implementation of the borrow checker and was part of the initially stabilized Rust 1.0. In mid 2017, work began to implement the current MIR borrow checker and that effort ompleted by the end of 2017, for the most part. During 2018, efforts were made to migrate away from the AST borrow checker to the MIR borrow checker - eventually culminating into "migrate" mode - where HIR typeck with lexical region resolving following by MIR borrow checking - being active by default in the 2018 edition.
In early 2019, migrate mode was turned on by default in the 2015 edition as well, but with MIR borrowck errors emitted as warnings. By late 2019, these warnings were upgraded to full errors. This was followed by the complete removal of the AST borrow checker.
In the period since, various errors emitted by the MIR borrow checker have been improved to the point that they are mostly the same or better than those emitted by the lexical region resolver.
While there do remain some degradations in errors (tracked under the [NLL-diagnostics tag](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3ANLL-diagnostics), those are sufficiently small and rare enough that increased flexibility of MIR borrow check-only is now a worthwhile tradeoff.
## What is stabilized
As said previously, this does not fundamentally change the landscape of accepted programs. However, there are a [few](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3ANLL-fixed-by-NLL) cases where programs can compile under `feature(nll)`, but not otherwise.
There are two notable patterns that are "fixed" by this stabilization. First, the `scoped_threads` feature, which is a continutation of a pre-1.0 API, can sometimes emit a [weird lifetime error](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/95527) without NLL. Second, actually seen in the standard library. In the `Extend` impl for `HashMap`, there is an implied bound of `K: 'a` that is available with NLL on but not without - this is utilized in the impl.
As mentioned before, there are a large number of diagnostic differences. Most of them are better, but some are worse. None are serious or happen often enough to need to block this PR. The biggest change is the loss of error code for a number of lifetime errors in favor of more general "lifetime may not live long enough" error. While this may *seem* bad, the former error codes were just attempts to somewhat-arbitrarily bin together lifetime errors of the same type; however, on paper, they end up being roughly the same with roughly the same kinds of solutions.
## What isn't stabilized
This PR does not completely remove the lexical region resolver. In the future, it may be possible to remove that (while still keeping HIR typeck) or to remove it together with HIR typeck.
## Tests
Many test outputs get updated by this PR. However, there are number of tests specifically geared towards NLL under `src/test/ui/nll`

List configuration values can now be extended instead of replaced
I've seen some `clippy.toml` files, that have a few additions to the default list of a configuration and then a copy of our default. The list will therefore not be updated, when we add new names. This change should make it simple for new users to append values instead of replacing them.
I'm uncertain if the documentation of the `".."` is apparent. Any suggestions are welcome. I've also check that the lint list displays the examples correctly.

Fix `manual_range_contains` false negative with chains of `&&` and `||`
Fixes#8745
Since the precedence for `&&` is the same as itself the HIR for a chain of `&&` ends up with a right skewed tree like:
```
&&
/ \
&& c2
/ \
... c1
```
So only the leftmost `&&` was actually "fully" checked, the top level was just `c2` and `&&` so the `manual_range_contains` lint won't apply. This change makes it also check `c2` with `c1`.
There's a bit of a hacky solution in the [second commit](257f09776a) to check if the number of open/closing parens in the snippet match. This is to prevent a case like `((x % 2 == 0) || (x < 0)) || (x >= 10)` from offering a suggestion like `((x % 2 == 0) || !(0..10).contains(&x)` which now won't compile.
Any suggestions for that paren hack welcome, kinda new to working on this so not too sure about possible solutions :) it's weird because I don't know how else to check for parens in HIR considering they're removed when lowering AST.

Check `.fixed` paths' existence in `run_ui`
This PR adds a test to check that there exists a `.fixed` file for every `.stderr` file in `tests/ui` that mentions a `MachineApplicable` lint. The test leverages `compiletest-rs`'s `rustfix_coverage` option.
I tried to add `.fixed` files where they appeared to be missing. However, 38 exceptional `.rs` files remain. Several of those include comments indicating that they are exceptions, though not all do. Apologies, as I have not tried to associate the 38 files with GH issues. (I think that would be a lot of work, and I worry about linking the wrong issue.)

changelog: Introduced `allow-dbg-in-tests` config value. [dbg_macro] does not allow `dbg!` in test code by default.
When trying to set the current suggestion, if the type of the expression
is not a reference and it is not trivially pure clone copy, we should still
trigger and emit a lint message. Since this fix may require cloning an
expensive-to-clone type, do not attempt to offer a suggested fix.
This change means that matches generated from TryDesugar and AwaitDesugar
would normally trigger a lint, but they are out of scope for this lint,
so we will explicitly ignore matches with sources of TryDesugar or
AwaitDesugar.

This adds a testcase for a bugfix that has been fixed by https://github.com/rust-lang/rustfix/tree/v0.6.1
`rustfix` is pulled in by `compiletest_rs`. So to test that the correct rustfix version is used, I added one (and a half) testcase.
I tried to add a testcase for #8734 as well, but interesting enough the rustfix is wrong:
```diff
fn issue8734() {
Track if a where bound comes from a impl Trait desugar
With https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/93803 `impl Trait` function arguments get desugared to hidden where bounds. However, Clippy needs to know if a bound was originally a `impl Trait` or an actual bound. This adds a field to the `WhereBoundPredicate` struct to keep track of this information during AST->HIR lowering.
Address `unnecessary_to_owned` false positive
My proposed fix for #8759 is to revise the conditions that delineate `redundant_clone` and `unnecessary_to_owned`:
```rust
// Only flag cases satisfying at least one of the following three conditions:
// * the referent and receiver types are distinct
// * the referent/receiver type is a copyable array
// * the method is `Cow::into_owned`
// This restriction is to ensure there is no overlap between `redundant_clone` and this
// lint. It also avoids the following false positive:
// https://github.com/rust-lang/rust-clippy/issues/8759
// Arrays are a bit of a corner case. Non-copyable arrays are handled by
// `redundant_clone`, but copyable arrays are not.
```
This change causes a few cases that were previously flagged by `unnecessary_to_owned` to no longer be flagged. But one could argue those cases would be better handled by `redundant_clone`.
Allow inline consts to reference generic params
Tracking issue: #76001
The RFC says that inline consts cannot reference to generic parameters (for now), same as array length expressions. And expresses that it's desirable for it to reference in-scope generics, when array length expressions gain that feature as well.
However it is possible to implement this for inline consts before doing this for all anon consts, because inline consts are only used as values and they won't be used in the type system. So we can have:
```rust
fn foo<T>() {
let x = [4i32; std::mem::size_of::<T>()]; // NOT ALLOWED (for now)
let x = const { std::mem::size_of::<T>() }; // ALLOWED with this PR!
let x = [4i32; const { std::mem::size_of::<T>() }]; // NOT ALLOWED (for now)
}
```
This would make inline consts super useful for compile-time checks and assertions:
```rust
fn assert_zst<T>() {
const { assert!(std::mem::size_of::<T>() == 0) };
}
```
This would create an error during monomorphization when `assert_zst` is instantiated with non-ZST `T`s. A error during mono might sound scary, but this is exactly what a "desugared" inline const would do:
```rust
fn assert_zst<T>() {
struct F<T>(T);
impl<T> F<T> {
const V: () = assert!(std::mem::size_of::<T>() == 0);
}
let _ = F::<T>::V;
}
```
It should also be noted that the current inline const implementation can already reference the type params via type inference, so this resolver-level restriction is not any useful either:
```rust
fn foo<T>() -> usize {
let (_, size): (PhantomData<T>, usize) = const {
const fn my_size_of<T>() -> (PhantomData<T>, usize) {
(PhantomData, std::mem::size_of::<T>())
}
my_size_of()
};
size
}
```
Support negative ints in manual_range_contains
fixes: #8721
changelog: Fixes issue where ranges containing ints with different signs would be
incorrect due to comparing as unsigned.
Fix `cast_lossless` to avoid warning on `usize` to `f64` conversion.
Previously, the `cast_lossless` lint would issue a warning on code that
converted a `usize` value to `f64`, on 32-bit targets.
`usize` to `f64` is a lossless cast on 32-bit targets, however there is
no corresponding `f64::from` that takes a `usize`, so `cast_lossless`'s
suggested replacement does not compile.
This PR disables the lint in the case of casting from `usize` or `isize`.
Fixes#3689.
Those lints are trait_duplication_in_bounds and
type_repetition_in_bounds. I don't think those can be fixed on the
Clippy side alone, but need changes in the compiler. So let's move them
to nursery to get the sync through and then fix them on the rustc side.
Also adds a regression test that has to be fixed before they can be
moved back to pedantic.
[FP] identity_op in front of if
fix#8724
changelog: FP: [`identity_op`]: is now allowed in front of if statements, blocks and other expressions where the suggestion would be invalid.
Previously, the `cast_lossless` lint would issue a warning on code that
converted a `usize` value to `f64`, on 32-bit targets.
`usize` to `f64` is a lossless cast on 32-bit targets, however there is
`needless_late_init`: ignore `if let`, `let mut` and significant drops
No longer lints `if let`, personal taste on this one is pretty split, so it probably shouldn't be warning by default. Fixes#8613
```rust

```
No longer lints `let mut`, things like the following are not uncommon and look fine as they are
Avoids changing the drop order in an observable way, where the type of `x` has a drop with side effects and something between `x` and the first use also does, e.g.
48cc6cb791/tests/test_api.rs (L159-L167)
mistyped_literal_suffix: improve integer suggestions, avoid wrong float suggestions
This PR fixes 2 things:
- The known problem that integer types are always suggested as signed, by suggesting an unsigned suffix for literals that wouldnt fit in the signed type, and ignores any literals too big for the corresponding unsigned type too.
- The lint would only look at the integer part of any floating point literals without an exponent, this causing #6129. This just ignores those literals.
Examples:
```rust
let _ = 2_32; // still 2_i32
let _ = 234_8; // would now suggest 234_u8
// these are now ignored
let _ = 500_8;
let _ = 123_32.123;
```
changelog: suggest correct integer types in [`mistyped_literal_suffix`], ignore float literals without an exponent
fixes#6129
Previously this lint would only look at the integer part of floating
point literals without an exponent, giving wrong suggestions like:
```
|
8 | let _ = 123_32.123;
| ^^^^^^^^^^ help: did you mean to write: `123.123_f32`
|
```
Instead, it now ignores these literals.
Fixes#6129
Instead of just always suggesting signed suffixes regardless of size
of the value, it now suggests an unsigned suffix when the value wouldn't
fit into the corresponding signed type, and ignores the literal entirely
if it is too big for the unsigned type as well.
`manual_split_once`: lint manual iteration of `SplitN`
changelog: `manual_split_once`: lint manual iteration of `SplitN`
Now lints:
```rust
let mut iter = "a.b.c".splitn(2, '.');
let first = iter.next().unwrap();
let second = iter.next().unwrap();
let mut iter = "a.b.c".splitn(2, '.');
let first = iter.next()?;
let second = iter.next()?;
let mut iter = "a.b.c".rsplitn(2, '.');
let first = iter.next().unwrap();
let second = iter.next().unwrap();
let mut iter = "a.b.c".rsplitn(2, '.');
let first = iter.next()?;
let second = iter.next()?;
```
It suggests (minus leftover whitespace):
```rust
let (first, second) = "a.b.c".split_once('.').unwrap();
let (first, second) = "a.b.c".split_once('.')?;
let (second, first) = "a.b.c".rsplit_once('.').unwrap();
let (second, first) = "a.b.c".rsplit_once('.')?;
```
Currently only lints if the statements are next to each other, as detecting the various kinds of shadowing was tricky, so the following won't lint
```rust
let mut iter = "a.b.c".splitn(2, '.');
let something_else = 1;
let first = iter.next()?;
let second = iter.next()?;
```
improperly.
I originally implemented this specifically for `tracing::span::Entered`, until I discovered #8434 and read the commentary on that PR. Given this implementation is fully user configurable, doesn't tie clippy to any one particular crate, and introduces no additional dependencies, it seems more appropriate.
Report undeclared lifetimes during late resolution.
First step in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/91557
We reuse the rib design of the current resolution framework. Specific `LifetimeRib` and `LifetimeRibKind` types are introduced. The most important variant is `LifetimeRibKind::Generics`, which happens each time we encounter something which may introduce generic lifetime parameters. It can be an item or a `for<...>` binder. The `LifetimeBinderKind` specifies how this rib behaves with respect to in-band lifetimes.
Don't lint various match lints when expanded by a proc-macro
Remove overlap between `manual_split_once` and `needless_splitn`
changelog: Remove overlap between [`manual_split_once`] and [`needless_splitn`]. Fixes some incorrect `rsplitn` suggestions for [`manual_split_once`]
Things that can trigger `needless_splitn` no longer trigger `manual_split_once`, e.g.
```rust
s.[r]splitn(2, '=').next();
s.[r]splitn(2, '=').nth(0);
s.[r]splitn(3, '=').next_tuple();
```
Fixes some suggestions:
```rust
let s = "should not match";
s.rsplitn(2, '.').nth(1);
// old -> Some("should not match")
Some(s.rsplit_once('.').map_or(s, |x| x.0));
// new -> None
s.rsplit_once('.').map(|x| x.0);
s.rsplitn(2, '.').nth(1)?;
// old -> "should not match"
s.rsplit_once('.').map_or(s, |x| x.0);
// new -> early returns
s.rsplit_once('.')?.0;
```
Suggest from_utf8_unchecked in const contexts
Rework `undocumented_unsafe_blocks`
fixes: #8264fixes: #8449
One thing came up while working on this. Currently comments on the same line are supported like so:
```rust

```
Is this worth supporting at all? Anything other than a couple of words doesn't really fit well.
We're collecting our changelog from pull request descriptions.
If your PR only includes internal changes, you can just write
`changelog: none`. Otherwise, please write a short comment
explaining your change. Also, it's helpful for us that
the lint name is put into brackets `[]` and backticks `` ` ` ``,
e.g. ``[`lint_name`]``.
If your PR fixes an issue, you can add "fixes #issue_number" into this
PR description. This way the issue will be automatically closed when
your PR is merged.
If you added a new lint, here's a checklist for things that will be
checked during review or continuous integration.
- \[ ] Followed [lint naming conventions][lint_naming]
- \[ ] Added passing UI tests (including committed `.stderr` file)
- \[ ] `cargo test` passes locally
- \[ ] Executed `cargo dev update_lints`
- \[ ] Added lint documentation
- \[ ] Run `cargo dev fmt`
Closes#8591
I'm already sorry for the massive diff 😅
changelog: New lint [`empty_structs_with_brackets`]
Remove deps
This remove both `regex` and `cargo_metadata` as dependencies making `clippy_dev` compile ~3x faster (~46s -> ~16s locally). `cargo_metadata` was used to extract the `version` field from `Cargo.toml`, which is done trivially without that. `regex` was used to parse `define_clippy_lint` in `update_lints` which is now done using `rustc_lexer`. This isn't any simpler, but it compiles ~15s faster and runs ~3x faster (~2.1s -> ~0.7s locally).
The next biggest offenders to compile times are `clap` and `winapi` on windows. `clap` could be removed, but re-implementing enough is probably more work than it's worth. `winapi` is used by `opener` and `walkdir` so it's stuck there.
Handle relative paths in module_files lints
The problem being that when clippy is run in the project's directory `lp` would be a relative path, this wasn't caught by the tests as there `lp` is an absolute path. Being a relative path it did not start with `trim_src_path` and so was ignored
Also allowed the removal of some `.to_os_string`/`.to_owned`s
Add `crate_in_macro_def` lint
This PR adds a lint to check for `crate` as opposed to `$crate` used in a macro definition.
I think this can close#4798. That issue focused on the case where the macro author "imports something into said macro."
But I think use of `crate` is likely to be a bug whether it appears in a `use` statement or not. There could be some use case I am failing to see, though. (cc: `@nilscript` `@flip1995)`
Llint for casting between raw slice pointers with different element sizes
This lint disallows using `as` to convert from a raw pointer to a slice (e.g. `*const [i32]`, `*mut [Foo]`) to any other raw pointer to a slice if the element types have different sizes. When a raw slice pointer is cast, the data pointer and count metadata are preserved. This means that when the size of the inner slice's element type changes, the total number of bytes pointed to by the count changes. For example a `*const [i32]` with length 4 (four `i32` elements) is cast `as *const [u8]` the resulting pointer points to four `u8` elements at the same address, losing most of the data. When the size *increases* the resulting pointer will point to *more* data, and accessing that data will be UB.
On its own, *producing* the pointer isn't actually a problem, but because any use of the pointer as a slice will either produce surprising behavior or cause UB I believe this is a correctness lint. If the pointer is not intended to be used as a slice, the user should instead use any of a number of methods to produce just a data pointer including an `as` cast to a thin pointer (e.g. `p as *const i32`) or if the pointer is being created from a slice, the `as_ptr` method on slices. Detecting the intended use of the pointer is outside the scope of this lint, but I believe this lint will also lead users to realize that a slice pointer is only for slices.
There is an exception to this lint when either of the slice element types are zero sized (e.g `*mut [()]`). The total number of bytes pointed to by the slice with a zero sized element is zero. In that case preserving the length metadata is likely intended as a workaround to get the length metadata of a slice pointer though a zero sized slice.
The lint does not forbid casting pointers to slices with the *same* element size as the cast was likely intended to reinterpret the data in the slice as some equivalently sized data and the resulting pointer will behave as intended.
---
changelog: Added ``[`cast_slice_different_sizes`]``, a lint that disallows using `as`-casts to convert between raw pointers to slices when the elements have different sizes.
Only point at the end of the crate. We could try making it point at the
beginning of the crate, but that is confused with `DUMMY_SP`, causing
the output to be *worse*.
This change will make it so that VSCode will *not* underline the whole
file when `main` is missing, so other errors will be visible.
Add lint to detect `allow` attributes without reason
I was considering putting this lint into the pedantic group. However, that would result in countless warnings for existing projects. Having it in restriction also seems good to me 🙃 (And now I need sleep 💤 )
Add `unnecessary_find_map` lint
Closes#8467
new lint: `missing-spin-loop`
This fixes#7809. I went with the shorter name because the function is called `std::hint::spin_loop`. It doesn't yet detect `while let` loops. I left that for a follow-up PR.
changelog: new lint: [`missing_spin_loop`]
This internal lint checks if the `extract_msrv_attrs!` macro is used if
a lint has a MSRV. If not, it suggests to add this attribute to the lint
pass implementation.
