# Objective Working with a large number of entities with `Aabbs`, rendered with an instanced shader, I found the bottleneck became the frustum culling system. The goal of this PR is to significantly improve culling performance without any major changes. We should consider constructing a BVH for more substantial improvements. ## Solution - Convert the inner entity query to a parallel iterator with `par_for_each_mut` using a batch size of 1,024. - This outperforms single threaded culling when there are more than 1,000 entities. - Below this they are approximately equal, with <= 10 microseconds of multithreading overhead. - Above this, the multithreaded version is significantly faster, scaling linearly with core count. - In my million-entity-workload, this PR improves my framerate by 200% - 300%. ## log-log of `check_visibility` time vs. entities for single/multithreaded ![image](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/2632925/163709007-7eab4437-e9f9-4c06-bac0-250073885110.png) --- ## Changelog Frustum culling is now run with a parallel query. What is Bevy?
Bevy is a refreshingly simple data-driven game engine built in Rust. It is free and open-source forever!
WARNING
Bevy is still in the very early stages of development. APIs can and will change (now is the time to make suggestions!). Important features are missing. Documentation is sparse. Please don't build any serious projects in Bevy unless you are prepared to be broken by API changes constantly.
MSRV: Bevy relies heavily on improvements in the Rust language and compiler. As a result, the Minimum Supported Rust Version (MSRV) is "the latest stable release" of Rust.
Design Goals
- Capable: Offer a complete 2D and 3D feature set
- Simple: Easy for newbies to pick up, but infinitely flexible for power users
- Data Focused: Data-oriented architecture using the Entity Component System paradigm
- Modular: Use only what you need. Replace what you don't like
- Fast: App logic should run quickly, and when possible, in parallel
- Productive: Changes should compile quickly ... waiting isn't fun

Getting Started
We recommend checking out The Bevy Book for a full tutorial.
Follow the Setup guide to ensure your development environment is set up correctly. Once set up, you can quickly try out the examples by cloning this repo and running the following commands:
# Switch to the correct version (latest release, default is main development branch)
git checkout latest
# Runs the "breakout" example
cargo run --example breakout
Fast Compiles
Bevy can be built just fine using default configuration on stable Rust. However for really fast iterative compiles, you should enable the "fast compiles" setup by following the instructions here.
