This change allows more fine tuning of driver model based SPI support in
SPL and TPL. It is now possible to explicitly enable/disable the DM_SPI
support in SPL and TPL via Kconfig option.
Before this change it was necessary to use:
/* SPI Flash Configs */
#if defined(CONFIG_SPL_BUILD)
#undef CONFIG_DM_SPI
#undef CONFIG_DM_SPI_FLASH
#undef CONFIG_SPI_FLASH_MTD
#endif
in the ./include/configs/<board>.h, which is error prone and shall be
avoided when we strive to switch to Kconfig.
The goal of this patch:
Provide distinction for DM_SPI support in both U-Boot proper and SPL (TPL).
Valid use case is when U-Boot proper wants to use DM_SPI, but SPL must
still support non DM driver.
Another use case is the conversion of non DM/DTS SPI driver to support
DM/DTS. When such driver needs to work in both SPL and U-Boot proper, the
distinction is needed in Kconfig (also if SPL version of the driver
supports OF_PLATDATA).
In the end of the day one would have to support following use cases (in
single driver file - e.g. mxs_spi.c):
- U-Boot proper driver supporting DT/DTS
- U-Boot proper driver without DT/DTS support (deprecated)
- SPL driver without DT/DTS support
- SPL (and TPL) driver with DT/DTS (when the SoC has enough resources to
run full blown DT/DTS)
- SPL driver with DT/DTS and SPL_OF_PLATDATA (when one have constrained
environment with no fitImage and OF_LIBFDT support).
Some boards do require SPI support (with DM) in SPL (TPL) and some only
have DM_SPI{_FLASH} defined to allow compiling SPL.
This patch converts #ifdef CONFIG_DM_SPI* to #if CONFIG_IS_ENABLED(DM_SPI)
and provides corresponding defines in Kconfig.

Deciding whether to compile the env_sf_save() function based solely on
CONFIG_SPL_BUILD is wrong: For U-Boot proper, it leads to a build
warning in case CONFIG_CMD_SAVEENV=n (because the initialization of
the .save member is guarded by CONFIG_CMD_SAVEENV, while the
env_sf_save() function is built if !CONFIG_SPL_BUILD - and even
without the CONFIG_CMD_SAVEENV guard, the env_save_ptr() macro would
just expand to NULL, with no reference to env_sf_save visible to the
compiler). And for SPL, when one selects CONFIG_SPL_SAVEENV, one
obviously expects to actually be able to save the environment.
The compiler warning can be fixed by using a "<something> ?
env_sf_save : NULL" construction instead of a macro that just eats its
argument and expands to NULL. That way, if <something> is false,
env_sf_save gets eliminated as dead code, but the compiler still sees
the reference to it.
For <something>, we can use CONFIG_IS_ENABLED(SAVEENV), which is true
precisely:
- For U-Boot proper, when CONFIG_CMD_SAVEENV is set (because
CONFIG_SAVEENV is a hidden config symbol that gets set if and only
if CONFIG_CMD_SAVEENV is set).
- For SPL, when CONFIG_SPL_SAVEENV is set.
As a bonus, this also removes quite a few preprocessor conditionals.
This has been run-time tested on a mpc8309-derived board to verify
that saving the environment does indeed work in SPL with these patches
applied.

for CONFIG_CMD_SAVEENV=n, but that vanishes if we use the ENV_SAVE_PTR

The callback member of struct env_entry is always NULL for an SPL
build. Removing it thus saves a bit of run-time memory in the
SPL (when CONFIG_SPL_ENV_SUPPORT=y) since struct env_entry is embedded
in struct env_entry_node - i.e. about 2KB for the normal case of
512+change hash table entries.
Two small fixups are needed for this, all other references to the
callback member are already under !CONFIG_SPL_BUILD: Don't initialize
.callback in set_flags() - hsearch_r doesn't use that value
anyway. And make env_callback_init() initialize ->callback to NULL for
a new entry instead of relying on an unused or deleted entry having
NULL in ->callback.

I'm also seeing the build failure that commit
7d4776545b env: solve compilation error in SPL
tried to fix, namely that the reference to env_flags_validate from
env_htab cannot be satisfied when flags.o is not built in. However,
that commit got reverted by
d90fc9c3de Revert "env: solve compilation error in SPL"
Necessary, but not sufficient conditions to see this are
CONFIG_SPL=y (obviously)
CONFIG_SPL_ENV_SUPPORT=n (so flags.o does not get compiled)
CONFIG_SPL_LIBCOMMON_SUPPORT=y (so env/built-in.o is part of the SPL link)
Now, these are satisfied for e.g. imx6q_logic_defconfig. But that
builds just fine, and spl/u-boot-spl.map lists .data.env_htab among
the discarded (garbage collected) sections. Yet, on our
mpc8309-derived board, we do see the build failure, so perhaps the
linker works a bit differently on ppc than on ARM, or there's yet some
other configuration option needed to observe the break.
This is another attempt at solving it, which also cleans up
env/Makefile a bit: Introduce a def_bool y symbol CONFIG_ENV_SUPPORT
which complements CONFIG_(SPL/TPL)_SUPPORT. Then use
CONFIG_$(SPL_TPL_)ENV_SUPPORT to decide whether to include the five
basic env/*.o files. For attr.o, flags.o and callback.o, this
shouldn't change anything. Also, common.o and env.o still get
unconditionally built for U-boot proper. But for TPL/SPL, those two
are only included if CONFIG_(SPL/TPL)_SUPPORT is set.
Having that symbol should also allow simplifying conditionals such as
#if !defined(CONFIG_SPL_BUILD) || CONFIG_IS_ENABLED(ENV_SUPPORT)
found in drivers/reset/reset-socfpga.c to just
CONFIG_IS_ENABLED(ENV_SUPPORT).

In case when the environment on some location is malformed (CRC isn't
matching), there is a chance we won't be able to save the environment to
that location. For example, consider the case when we only have the
environment on eMMC, but it's zeroed out. In that case, we won't be able
to "env save" to it, because of "bad CRC" error. That's happening
because in env_load() function we consider malformed environment as
incorrect one, and defaulting to the location with highest (0)
priority, which can be different from one we are dealing with right now
(e.g., highest priority can be ENV_FAT on SD card, which is not
inserted, but we want to use ENV_MMC on eMMC, where we were booted
from).
This issue began to reproduce after commit d30ba2315a ("u-boot: remove
driver lookup loop from env_save()") on BeagleBone Black, but that
commit didn't introduce the wrong logic, it just changed the behavior
for default location to use, merely revealing this issue.
To fix that, let's implement next logic in env_load():
1. Try to find out correct environment; if found -- use it
2. If working environment wasn't found, but we found malformed one
(with bad CRC), let's use it for further "env save". But make sure
to use malformed environment location with highest priority.
3. If neither correct nor malformed environment was found, let's
default to environment location with highest priority (0)
Steps to reproduce mentioned issue on BeagleBone Black (fixed in this
patch):
1. Boot from SD card and erase eMMC in U-Boot shell:
=> mmc dev 1
=> mmc erase 0 100000
=> gpt write mmc 1 $partitions
2. Write new SPL and U-Boot to eMMC; the rest of eMMC will stay filled
with zeroes
3. Boot from eMMC; try to do:
=> env save
4. Observe the error (incorrect behavior). Correct behavior: environment
should be stored correctly on eMMC, in spite of it has "bad CRC"

Callers of env_import*() functions might want to check the case when we
have incorrect environment (with bad CRC). For example, when environment
location is being defined in env_load(), call chain may look like this:
env_load() -> drv->load() = env_mmc_load() -> env_import()
Return code will be passed from env_import() all way up to env_load().
Right now both env_mmc_load() and env_import() return -EIO error code,
so env_load() can't differentiate between two cases:
1. Driver reports the error, because device is not accessible
2. Device is actually accessible, but environment is broken
Let's return -ENOMSG in env_import(), so we can distinguish two cases
mentioned above. It will make it possible to continue working with "bad
CRC" environment (like doing "env save"), instead of considering it not
functional (implemented in subsequent patch).

The spi_flash_read_env function is a wrapper over spi_flash_read, which
enables the env to read multiple flash page size from flash until '\0\0'
is read or the end of env partition is reached. Instead of reading the
entire env size. When it reads '\0\0', it stops reading further the env
and assumes that the rest of env is '\0'.
This is an optimization for large environments that contain few bytes
environment variables. In this case it doesn't need to read the entire
environment and only few pages.

The function set_default_env() sets the hashtable flags for import_r().
Formally set_default_env() doesn't accept flags from its callers. In
practice the caller can (un)set the H_INTERACTIVE flag, but it has to be
done using the first character of the function's string argument. Other
flags like H_FORCE can't be set by the caller.
Change the function to accept flags argument. The benefits are:
1. The caller will have to explicitly set the H_INTERACTIVE flag,
instead of un-setting it using a special char in a string.
2. Add the ability to propagate flags from the caller to himport(),
especially the H_FORCE flag from do_env_default() in nvedit.c that
currently gets ignored for "env default -a -f" commands.
3. Flags and messages will not be coupled together. A caller will be
able to set flags without passing a string and vice versa.
Please note:
The propagation of H_FORCE from do_env_default() does not introduce any
functional changes, because currently himport_r() is set to destroy the
old environment regardless if H_FORCE flag is set or not. More changes
are needed to utilize the propagation of H_FORCE.

there weren't a lot of other examples to borrow from. So we picked the
area of the file that usually had a full license text and replaced it
with an appropriate SPDX-License-Identifier: entry. Since then, the
Linux Kernel has adopted SPDX tags and they place it as the very first
line in a file (except where shebangs are used, then it's second line)
and with slightly different comment styles than us.
In part due to community overlap, in part due to better tag visibility

Modifying the default environment via CONFIG_EXTRA_ENV_SETTINGS is
somewhat inflexible, partly because the cpp language does not allow

environment consistently tedious and error-prone.
This implements a Kconfig option for allowing one to define the entire

used in linking scripts to allow fine placement of embedded

This implies that GCC randomly places objects from env/embedded.o
and environment is not guaranteed to be located at the correct address:
04003df8 g F .text 00000038 mii_init
04004000 g O .text 00000004 env_size
04004004 g O .text 00002000 environment
04006004 g F .text 00000040 .hidden __lshrdi3
This patch restores this capability by allocating each object marked
with __UBOOT_ENV_SECTION__ into a different section. Hence
'environment' will be alone in .text.environment, allowing a
fine placement in u-boot.lds with:
. = DEFINED(env_offset) ? env_offset : .;

new parameters to the environment driver lookup function: the priority and
operation.
The operation parameter is meant to identify, obviously, the operation you
might want to perform on the environment.
The priority is a number passed to identify the environment priority you
want to retrieve. The lowest priority parameter (0) will be the primary
source.
Combining the two parameters allow you to support multiple environments
through different priorities, and to change those priorities between read
and writes operations.
This is especially useful to implement migration mechanisms where you want
to always use the same environment first, be it to read or write, while the
common case is more likely to use the same environment it has read from to
write it to.

it's about to save to during env save.
As we're about to rework the environment to be able to handle multiple
environment sources, we might not have an idea of what environment backend
is going to be used before trying (and possibly failing for some).
Therefore, it makes sense to remove that message and move it to the
env_save function itself. As a side effect, we also can get rid of the call
to env_driver_lookup_default that is also about to get refactored.

This commit adds ENV_SIZE and ENV_OFFSET configuration items for
ARCH_ROCKCHIP, but keeps these non-visible (i.e. not prompt is given).
With these new items present, the configuration from the header files
is moved to Kconfig.
Keeping these non-visible is necessary to have the possibility to
select new default values if CONFIG_IS_IN_* is changed (interactively
or with oldconfig). Otherwise it will always be set to a previous
value if used with a prompt. As an example if we do a defconfig with
CONFIG_IS_IN_MMC and change it to CONFIG_IS_IN_SPI_FLASH via
menuconfig, ENV_SIZE and ENV_OFFSET will not be changed to the correct
values as defconfig will already have set them to the default values
of CONFIG_IS_IN_MMC in .config.

U-Boot widely uses error() as a bit noisier variant of printf().
This macro causes name conflict with the following line in
include/linux/compiler-gcc.h:
# define __compiletime_error(message) __attribute__((error(message)))
This prevents us from using __compiletime_error(), and makes it
difficult to fully sync BUILD_BUG macros with Linux. (Notice
Linux's BUILD_BUG_ON_MSG is implemented by using compiletime_assert().)
Let's convert error() into now treewide-available pr_err().

With the change to the environment code to remove the common init stage
of pointing to the default environment and setting it as valid, combined
with the change to switch gd->env_valid from 0/1/2 to an enum we now
must set env_valid to one of the enum values rather than an int. And in
this case, not only was setting it to an int wrong, it was now the wrong
value. Finally, in the case of ENV_IS_NOWHERE we must still say that
our envionrment is invalid after init for things to continue to
function.

Changes in v3:
- Actually include changes for env/nowhere.c
The load() methods have inconsistent behaviour on error. Some of them load
an empty default environment. Some load an environment containing an error
message. Others do nothing.
As a step in the right direction, have the method return an error code.
Then the caller could handle this itself in a consistent way.

At present we support multiple environment drivers but there is not way to
select between them at run time. Also settings related to the position and
size of the environment area are global (i.e. apply to all locations).
Until these limitations are removed we cannot really support more than one
environment location. Adjust the location to be a choice so that only one
can be selected. By default the environment is 'nowhere', meaning that the
environment exists only in memory and cannot be saved.
Also expand the help for the 'nowhere' option and move it to the top since
it is the default.

Set up a location driver for each supported environment location. At
present this just points to the global functions and is not used. A
later patch will switch this over to use private functions in each driver.
There are several special cases here in various drivers to handle
peculiarities of certain boards:
1. Some boards define CONFIG_ENV_IS_IN_FAT and CONFIG_SPL_ENV_SUPPORT but
do not actually load the environment in SPL. The env load code was
optimised out before but with the driver, it is not. Therefore a special
case is added to env/fat.c. The correct fix (depending on board testing
might be to disable CONFIG_SPL_ENV_SUPPORT.
2. A similar situations happens with CONFIG_ENV_IS_IN_FLASH. Some boards
do not actually load the environment in SPL, so to reduce code size we
need to drop that code. A similar fix may be possible with these boards,
or it may be possible to adjust the environment CONFIG settings.
Added to the above is that the CONFIG_SPL_ENV_SUPPORT option does not
apply when the environment is in flash.
Obviously the above has been discovered through painful and time-consuming
trial and error. Hopefully board maintainers can take a look and figure
out what is actually needed.
