Rename Value::CustomValue to Value::Custom (#12309)
# Description
The second `Value` is redundant and will consume five extra bytes on
each transmission of a custom value to/from a plugin.

# User-Facing Changes
This is a breaking change to the plugin protocol.

The [example in the protocol
reference](https://www.nushell.sh/contributor-book/plugin_protocol_reference.html#value)
becomes

```json
{
  "Custom": {
    "val": {
      "type": "PluginCustomValue",
      "name": "database",
      "data": [36, 190, 127, 40, 12, 3, 46, 83],
      "notify_on_drop": true
    },
    "span": {
      "start": 320,
      "end": 340
    }
  }
}
```

instead of

```json
{
  "CustomValue": {
    ...
  }
}
```

Add command_prelude module (#12291)
# Description
When implementing a `Command`, one must also import all the types
present in the function signatures for `Command`. This makes it so that
we often import the same set of types in each command implementation
file. E.g., something like this:
```rust
use nu_protocol::ast::Call;
use nu_protocol::engine::{Command, EngineState, Stack};
use nu_protocol::{
    record, Category, Example, IntoInterruptiblePipelineData, IntoPipelineData, PipelineData,
    ShellError, Signature, Span, Type, Value,
};
```

This PR adds the `nu_engine::command_prelude` module which contains the
necessary and commonly used types to implement a `Command`:
```rust
// command_prelude.rs
pub use crate::CallExt;
pub use nu_protocol::{
    ast::{Call, CellPath},
    engine::{Command, EngineState, Stack},
    record, Category, Example, IntoInterruptiblePipelineData, IntoPipelineData, IntoSpanned,
    PipelineData, Record, ShellError, Signature, Span, Spanned, SyntaxShape, Type, Value,
};
```

This should reduce the boilerplate needed to implement a command and
also gives us a place to track the breadth of the `Command` API. I tried
to be conservative with what went into the prelude modules, since it
might be hard/annoying to remove items from the prelude in the future.
Let me know if something should be included or excluded.

Better generic errors for plugins (and perhaps scripts) (#12236)
# Description
This makes `LabeledError` much more capable of representing close to
everything a `miette::Diagnostic` can, including `ShellError`, and
allows plugins to generate multiple error spans, codes, help, etc.

`LabeledError` is now embeddable within `ShellError` as a transparent
variant.

This could also be used to improve `error make` and `try/catch` to
reflect `LabeledError` exactly in the future.

Also cleaned up some errors in existing plugins.

Make EngineState clone cheaper with Arc on all of the heavy objects (#12229)
# Description
This makes many of the larger objects in `EngineState` into `Arc`, and
uses `Arc::make_mut` to do clone-on-write if the reference is not
unique. This is generally very cheap, giving us the best of both worlds
- allowing us to mutate without cloning if we have an exclusive
reference, and cloning if we don't.

This started as more of a curiosity for me after remembering that
`Arc::make_mut` exists and can make using `Arc` for mostly immutable
data that sometimes needs to be changed very convenient, and also after
hearing someone complain about memory usage on Discord - this is a
somewhat significant win for that.

The exact objects that were wrapped in `Arc`:

- `files`, `file_contents` - the strings and byte buffers
- `decls` - the whole `Vec`, but mostly to avoid lots of individual
`malloc()` calls on Clone rather than for memory usage
- `blocks` - the blocks themselves, rather than the outer Vec
- `modules` - the modules themselves, rather than the outer Vec
- `env_vars`, `previous_env_vars` - the entire maps
- `config`

The changes required were relatively minimal, but this is a breaking API
change. In particular, blocks are added as Arcs, to allow the parser
cache functionality to work.

With my normal nu config, running on Linux, this saves me about 15 MiB
of process memory usage when running interactively (65 MiB → 50 MiB).

This also makes quick command executions cheaper, particularly since
every REPL loop now involves a clone of the engine state so that we can
recover from a panic. It also reduces memory usage where engine state
needs to be cloned and sent to another thread or kept within an
iterator.

Make custom value type handling more consistent (#12230)

# Description

- Rename `CustomValue::value_string()` to `type_name()` to reflect its
usage better.
- Change print behavior to always call `to_base_value()` first, to give
the custom value better control over the output.
- Change `describe --detailed` to show the type name as the subtype,
rather than trying to describe the base value.
- Change custom `Type` to use `type_name()` rather than `typetag_name()`
to make things like `PluginCustomValue` more transparent

One question: should `describe --detailed` still include a description
of the base value somewhere? I'm torn on it, it seems possibly useful
for some things (maybe sqlite databases?), but having `describe -d` not
include the custom type name anywhere felt weird. Another option would
be to add another method to `CustomValue` for info to be displayed in
`describe`, so that it can be more type-specific?

IO and redirection overhaul (#11934)
# Description
The PR overhauls how IO redirection is handled, allowing more explicit
and fine-grain control over `stdout` and `stderr` output as well as more
efficient IO and piping.

To summarize the changes in this PR:
- Added a new `IoStream` type to indicate the intended destination for a
pipeline element's `stdout` and `stderr`.
- The `stdout` and `stderr` `IoStream`s are stored in the `Stack` and to
avoid adding 6 additional arguments to every eval function and
`Command::run`. The `stdout` and `stderr` streams can be temporarily
overwritten through functions on `Stack` and these functions will return
a guard that restores the original `stdout` and `stderr` when dropped.
- In the AST, redirections are now directly part of a `PipelineElement`
as a `Option<Redirection>` field instead of having multiple different
`PipelineElement` enum variants for each kind of redirection. This
required changes to the parser, mainly in `lite_parser.rs`.
- `Command`s can also set a `IoStream` override/redirection which will
apply to the previous command in the pipeline. This is used, for
example, in `ignore` to allow the previous external command to have its
stdout redirected to `Stdio::null()` at spawn time. In contrast, the
current implementation has to create an os pipe and manually consume the
output on nushell's side. File and pipe redirections (`o>`, `e>`, `e>|`,
etc.) have precedence over overrides from commands.

This PR improves piping and IO speed, partially addressing #10763. Using
the `throughput` command from that issue, this PR gives the following
speedup on my setup for the commands below:
| Command | Before (MB/s) | After (MB/s) | Bash (MB/s) |
| --------------------------- | -------------:| ------------:|
-----------:|
| `throughput o> /dev/null` | 1169 | 52938 | 54305 |
| `throughput \| ignore` | 840 | 55438 | N/A |
| `throughput \| null` | Error | 53617 | N/A |
| `throughput \| rg 'x'` | 1165 | 3049 | 3736 |
| `(throughput) \| rg 'x'` | 810 | 3085 | 3815 |

(Numbers above are the median samples for throughput)

This PR also paves the way to refactor our `ExternalStream` handling in
the various commands. For example, this PR already fixes the following
code:
```nushell
^sh -c 'echo -n "hello "; sleep 0; echo "world"' | find "hello world"
```
This returns an empty list on 0.90.1 and returns a highlighted "hello
world" on this PR.

Since the `stdout` and `stderr` `IoStream`s are available to commands
when they are run, then this unlocks the potential for more convenient
behavior. E.g., the `find` command can disable its ansi highlighting if
it detects that the output `IoStream` is not the terminal. Knowing the
output streams will also allow background job output to be redirected
more easily and efficiently.

# User-Facing Changes
- External commands returned from closures will be collected (in most
cases):
  ```nushell
  1..2 | each {|_| nu -c "print a" }
  ```
This gives `["a", "a"]` on this PR, whereas this used to print "a\na\n"
and then return an empty list.

  ```nushell
  1..2 | each {|_| nu -c "print -e a" }
  ```
This gives `["", ""]` and prints "a\na\n" to stderr, whereas this used
to return an empty list and print "a\na\n" to stderr.

- Trailing new lines are always trimmed for external commands when
piping into internal commands or collecting it as a value. (Failure to
decode the output as utf-8 will keep the trailing newline for the last
binary value.) In the current nushell version, the following three code
snippets differ only in parenthesis placement, but they all also have
different outputs:

  1. `1..2 | each { ^echo a }`
     ```
     a
     a
     ╭────────────╮
     │ empty list │
     ╰────────────╯
     ```
  2. `1..2 | each { (^echo a) }`
     ```
     ╭───┬───╮
     │ 0 │ a │
     │ 1 │ a │
     ╰───┴───╯
     ```
  3. `1..2 | (each { ^echo a })`
     ```
     ╭───┬───╮
     │ 0 │ a │
     │   │   │
     │ 1 │ a │
     │   │   │
     ╰───┴───╯
     ```

  But in this PR, the above snippets will all have the same output:
  ```
  ╭───┬───╮
  │ 0 │ a │
  │ 1 │ a │
  ╰───┴───╯
  ```

- All existing flags on `run-external` are now deprecated.

- File redirections now apply to all commands inside a code block:
  ```nushell
  (nu -c "print -e a"; nu -c "print -e b") e> test.out
  ```
This gives "a\nb\n" in `test.out` and prints nothing. The same result
would happen when printing to stdout and using a `o>` file redirection.

- External command output will (almost) never be ignored, and ignoring
output must be explicit now:
  ```nushell
  (^echo a; ^echo b)
  ```
This prints "a\nb\n", whereas this used to print only "b\n". This only
applies to external commands; values and internal commands not in return
position will not print anything (e.g., `(echo a; echo b)` still only
prints "b").

- `complete` now always captures stderr (`do` is not necessary).

do command: Make closure support default parameters and type checking (#12056)
# Description

Fixes: #11318

It's implemented by porting the similar logic in `eval_call`, I've tried
to reduce duplicate code, but it seems that it's hard without using
macros.

It only works for `do` command.

# User-Facing Changes
## Closure supports optional parameter
```nushell
let code = {|x?| print ($x | default "i'm the default")}
```
Previously it raises an error, after this change, it prints `i'm the
default`.

## Closure supports type checking
```nushell
let code = {|x: int| echo $x}
```
After this change, it will raise an error with a message: `can't convert

Remove feat extra and include in default (#12140)
# Description
The intended effect of the `extra` feature has been undermined by
introducing the full builds on our release pages and having more
activity on some of the extra commands.

To simplify the feature matrix let's get rid of it and focus our effort
on truly either refining a command to well-specified behavior or
discarding it entirely from the `nu` binary and moving it into plugins.

## Details
- Remove `--features extra` from CI
- Don't explicitly name `extra` in full build wf
- Remove feature extra from build-help scripts
- Update README in `nu-cmd-extra`
- Remove feature `extra`
- Fix previously dead `format pattern` tests
- Relax signature of `to html`
- Fix/ignore `html::test_no_color_flag`
- Remove dead features from `version`
- Refine `to html` type signature

# User-Facing Changes
The commands that were previously only available when building with
`--features extra` will now be available to everyone. This increases the
number of dependencies slightly but has a limited impact on the overall
binary size.

# Tests + Formatting
Some tests that were left in `nu-command` during cratification were dead
because the feature was not passed to `nu-command` and only to
`nu-cmd-lang` for feature-flag mention in `version`.
Those tests have now been either fixed or ignored in one case.

# After Submitting
There may be places in the documentation where we point to `--features
extra` that will now be moot (apart from the generated command help)

Keep plugins persistently running in the background (#12064)
# Description
This PR uses the new plugin protocol to intelligently keep plugin
processes running in the background for further plugin calls.

Running plugins can be seen by running the new `plugin list` command,
and stopped by running the new `plugin stop` command.

This is an enhancement for the performance of plugins, as starting new
plugin processes has overhead, especially for plugins in languages that
take a significant amount of time on startup. It also enables plugins
that have persistent state between commands, making the migration of
features like dataframes and `stor` to plugins possible.

Plugins are automatically stopped by the new plugin garbage collector,
configurable with `$env.config.plugin_gc`:

```nushell
  $env.config.plugin_gc = {
      # Configuration for plugin garbage collection
      default: {
          enabled: true # true to enable stopping of inactive plugins
          stop_after: 10sec # how long to wait after a plugin is inactive to stop it
      }
      plugins: {
          # alternate configuration for specific plugins, by name, for example:
          #
          # gstat: {
          #     enabled: false
          # }
      }
  }
```

If garbage collection is enabled, plugins will be stopped after
`stop_after` passes after they were last active. Plugins are counted as
inactive if they have no running plugin calls. Reading the stream from
the response of a plugin call is still considered to be activity, but if
a plugin holds on to a stream but the call ends without an active
streaming response, it is not counted as active even if it is reading
it. Plugins can explicitly disable the GC as appropriate with
`engine.set_gc_disabled(true)`.

The `version` command now lists plugin names rather than plugin
commands. The list of plugin commands is accessible via `plugin list`.

Recommend doing this together with #12029, because it will likely force
plugin developers to do the right thing with mutability and lead to less
unexpected behavior when running plugins nested / in parallel.

# User-Facing Changes
- new command: `plugin list`
- new command: `plugin stop`
- changed command: `version` (now lists plugin names, rather than
commands)
- new config: `$env.config.plugin_gc`
- Plugins will keep running and be reused, at least for the configured
GC period
- Plugins that used mutable state in weird ways like `inc` did might
misbehave until fixed
- Plugins can disable GC if they need to
- Had to change plugin signature to accept `&EngineInterface` so that
the GC disable feature works. #12029 does this anyway, and I'm expecting
(resolvable) conflicts with that

# Tests + Formatting
- 🟢 `toolkit fmt`
- 🟢 `toolkit clippy`
- 🟢 `toolkit test`
- 🟢 `toolkit test stdlib`

Because there is some specific OS behavior required for plugins to not
respond to Ctrl-C directly, I've developed against and tested on both
Linux and Windows to ensure that works properly.

This PR adds a new evaluator path with callbacks to a mutable trait
object implementing a Debugger trait. The trait object can do anything,
e.g., profiling, code coverage, step debugging. Currently,
entering/leaving a block and a pipeline element is marked with
callbacks, but more callbacks can be added as necessary. Not all
callbacks need to be used by all debuggers; unused ones are simply empty
calls. A simple profiler is implemented as a proof of concept.

The debugging support is implementing by making `eval_xxx()` functions
generic depending on whether we're debugging or not. This has zero
computational overhead, but makes the binary slightly larger (see
benchmarks below). `eval_xxx()` variants called from commands (like
`eval_block_with_early_return()` in `each`) are chosen with a dynamic
dispatch for two reasons: to not grow the binary size due to duplicating
the code of many commands, and for the fact that it isn't possible
because it would make Command trait objects object-unsafe.

In the future, I hope it will be possible to allow plugin callbacks such
that users would be able to implement their profiler plugins instead of
having to recompile Nushell.
[DAP](https://microsoft.github.io/debug-adapter-protocol/) would also be
interesting to explore.

Try `help debug profile`.

To profile with more granularity, increase the profiler depth (you'll
see that repeated `is-windows` calls take a large chunk of total time,
making it a good candidate for optimizing):

`cargo run --release -- bench_debug.nu` is consistently 1--2 ms slower
than `cargo run --release -- bench_nodebug.nu` due to the collection
overhead + gathering the report. This is expected. When gathering more
stuff, the overhead is obviously higher.

`cargo run --release -- bench_nodebug.nu` vs. `nu bench_nodebug.nu` I
didn't measure any difference. Both benchmarks report times between 97
and 103 ms randomly, without one being consistently higher than the
other. This suggests that at least in this particular case, when not
running any debugger, there is no runtime overhead.

## API changes

This PR adds a generic parameter to all `eval_xxx` functions that forces
you to specify whether you use the debugger. You can resolve it in two
ways:
* Use a provided helper that will figure it out for you. If you wanted
to use `eval_block(&engine_state, ...)`, call `let eval_block =
get_eval_block(&engine_state); eval_block(&engine_state, ...)`
* If you know you're in an evaluation path that doesn't need debugger
support, call `eval_block::<WithoutDebug>(&engine_state, ...)` (this is
the case of hooks, for example).

I tried to add more explanation in the docstring of `debugger_trait.rs`.

## TODO

- [x] Better profiler output to reduce spam of iterative commands like
`each`
- [x] Resolve `TODO: DEBUG` comments
- [x] Resolve unwraps
- [x] Add doc comments
- [x] Add usage and extra usage for `debug profile`, explaining all
columns

Change the ignore command to use drain() instead of collecting a value (#12120)
# Description

Change the `ignore` command to use `drain()` instead of collecting a
value.

This saves memory usage when piping a lot of output to `ignore`. There's
no reason to keep the output in memory if it's going to be discarded
anyway.

Replace panics with errors in thread spawning (#12040)
# Description
Replace panics with errors in thread spawning.

Also adds `IntoSpanned` trait for easily constructing `Spanned`, and an
implementation of `From<Spanned<std::io::Error>>` for `ShellError`,
which is used to provide context for the error wherever there was a span
conveniently available. In general this should make it more convenient
to do the right thing with `std::io::Error` and always add a span to it
when it's possible to do so.

Glob: don't allow implicit casting between glob and string (#11992)
# Description
As title, currently on latest main, nushell confused user if it allows
implicit casting between glob and string:
```nushell
let x = "*.txt"
def glob-test [g: glob] { open $g }
glob-test $x
```
It always expand the glob although `$x` is defined as a string.
This pr implements a solution from @kubouch :
> We could make it really strict and disallow all autocasting between
globs and strings because that's what's causing the "magic" confusion.
Then, modify all builtins that accept globs to accept oneof(glob,
string) and the rules would be that globs always expand and strings
never expand

# User-Facing Changes
After this pr, user needs to use `into glob` to invoke `glob-test`, if
user pass a string variable:
```nushell
let x = "*.txt"
def glob-test [g: glob] { open $g }
glob-test ($x | into glob)
```
Or else nushell will return an error.
```
 3 │ glob-test $x
   ·           ─┬
   ·            ╰── can't convert string to glob
open, rm, umv, cp, rm and du: Don't globs if inputs are variables or string interpolation (#11886)
# Description
This is a follow up to
https://github.com/nushell/nushell/pull/11621#issuecomment-1937484322
Also Fixes: #11838
## About the code change
It applys the same logic when we pass variables to external commands:
0487e9ffcb/crates/nu-command/src/system/run_external.rs (L162-L170)
That is: if user input dynamic things(like variables, sub-expression, or
string interpolation), it returns a quoted `NuPath`, then user input
won't be globbed
# User-Facing Changes
Given two input files: `a*c.txt`, `abc.txt`
* `let f = "a*c.txt"; rm $f` will remove one file: `a*c.txt`.
~* `let f = "a*c.txt"; rm --glob $f` will remove `a*c.txt` and
`abc.txt`~
* `let f: glob = "a*c.txt"; rm $f` will remove `a*c.txt` and `abc.txt`
## Rules about globbing with *variable*
Given two files: `a*c.txt`, `abc.txt`
| Cmd Type | example | Result |
| ----- | ------------------ | ------ |
| builtin | let f = "a*c.txt"; rm $f | remove `a*c.txt` |
| builtin | let f: glob = "a*c.txt"; rm $f | remove `a*c.txt` and
`abc.txt`
| builtin | let f = "a*c.txt"; rm ($f \| into glob) | remove `a*c.txt`
and `abc.txt`
| custom | def crm [f: glob] { rm $f }; let f = "a*c.txt"; crm $f |
remove `a*c.txt` and `abc.txt`
| custom | def crm [f: glob] { rm ($f \| into string) }; let f =
"a*c.txt"; crm $f | remove `a*c.txt`
| custom | def crm [f: string] { rm $f }; let f = "a*c.txt"; crm $f |
remove `a*c.txt`
| custom | def crm [f: string] { rm $f }; let f = "a*c.txt"; crm ($f \|
into glob) | remove `a*c.txt` and `abc.txt`
In general, if a variable is annotated with `glob` type, nushell will
expand glob pattern. Or else, we need to use `into | glob` to expand
glob pattern
I think `str glob-escape` command will be no-longer required. We can
do not attempt to glob expand if the file path is wrapped in quotes (#11569)
# Description
Fixes: #11455
### For arguments which is annotated with `:path/:directory/:glob`
To fix the issue, we need to have a way to know if a path is originally
quoted during runtime. So the information needed to be added at several
levels:
* parse time (from user input to expression)
We need to add quoted information into `Expr::Filepath`,
`Expr::Directory`, `Expr::GlobPattern`
* eval time
When convert from `Expr::Filepath`, `Expr::Directory`,
`Expr::GlobPattern` to `Value::String` during runtime, we won't auto
expanded the path if it's quoted
### For `ls`
It's really special, because it accepts a `String` as a pattern, and it
generates `glob` expression inside the command itself.
So the idea behind the change is introducing a special SyntaxShape to
ls: `SyntaxShape::LsGlobPattern`. So we can track if the pattern is
originally quoted easier, and we don't auto expand the path either.
Then when constructing a glob pattern inside ls, we check if input
pattern is quoted, if so: we escape the input pattern, so we can run `ls
a[123]b`, because it's already escaped.
Finally, to accomplish the checking process, we also need to introduce a
new value type called `Value::QuotedString` to differ from
`Value::String`, it's used to generate an enum called `NuPath`, which is
finally used in `ls` function. `ls` learned from `NuPath` to know if
user input is quoted.
# User-Facing Changes
Actually it contains several changes
adjust some commansd input_output type (#11436)
# Description
1. Make table to be a subtype of `list<any>`, so some input_output_types
of filter commands are unnecessary
2. Change some commands which accept an input type, but generates
different output types. In this case, delete duplicate entry, and change
relative output type to `<any>`
Yeah it makes some commands more permissive, but I think it's better to
run into strange issue that why my script runs to failed during parse
time.
Fix incorrect handling of boolean flags for builtin commands (#11492)
# Description
Possible fix of #11456
This PR fixes a bug where builtin commands did not respect the logic of
dynamically passed boolean flags. The reason is
[has_flag](6f59abaf43/crates/nu-protocol/src/ast/call.rs (L204C5-L212C6))
method did not evaluate and take into consideration expression used with
flag.
To address this issue a solution is proposed:
1. `has_flag` method is moved to `CallExt` and new logic to evaluate
expression and check if it is a boolean value is added
2. `has_flag_const` method is added to `CallExt` which is a constant
version of `has_flag`
3. `has_named` method is added to `Call` which is basically the old
logic of `has_flag`
4. All usages of `has_flag` in code are updated, mostly to pass
`engine_state` and `stack` to new `has_flag`. In `run_const` commands it
is replaced with `has_flag_const`. And in a few select places: parser,
`to nuon` and `into string` old logic via `has_named` is used.
# User-Facing Changes
Explicit values of boolean flags are now respected in builtin commands.
Remove Value::MatchPattern (#11356)
# Description
`Value::MatchPattern` implies that `MatchPattern`s are first-class
values. This PR removes this case, and commands must now instead use
`Expr::MatchPattern` to extract `MatchPattern`s just like how the
`match` command does using `Expr::MatchBlock`.
# User-Facing Changes
Enforce required, optional, and rest positional arguments start with an uppercase and end with a period. (#11285)
# Description
This updates all the positional arguments (except with
`--features=dataframe` or `--features=extra`) to start with an uppercase
letter and end with a period.
Part of #5066, specifically [this
comment](/nushell/nushell/issues/5066#issuecomment-1421528910)
Some arguments had example data removed from them because it also
appears in the examples.
There are other inconsistencies in positional arguments I noticed while
making the tests pass which I will bring up in #5066.
# User-Facing Changes
Positional arguments are now consistent
Move more commands to opaque Record type (#11122)
# Description
Further work towards the goal that we can make `Record`'s field private
and experiment with different internal representations
## Details
- Use inplace record iter in `nu-command/math/utils`
  - Guarantee that existing allocation can be reused
- Use proper record iterators in `path join`
- Remove unnecesary hashmap in `path join`
  - Should minimally reduce the overhead
- Unzip records in `nu-command`
- Refactor `query web` plugin to use record APIs
- Use `Record::into_values` for `values` command
- Use `Record::columns()` in `join` instead.
  - Potential minor pessimisation
  - Not the hot value path
- Use sane `Record` iters in example `Debug` impl
- Avoid layout assumption in `nu-cmd-extra/roll/mod`
  - Potential minor pessimisation
- relegated to `extra`, changing the representation may otherwise break
this op.
- Use record api in `rotate`
- Minor risk that this surfaces some existing invalid behavior as panics
as we now validate column/value lengths
  - `extra` so things are unstable
- Remove unnecessary references in `rotate`
  - Bonus cleanup
# User-Facing Changes
None functional, minor potential differences in runtime. You win some,
you lose some.
Implement Display for CellPath (#11023)
# Description
Because `CellPath::into_string` takes a borrowed `self`, I renamed it to
`to_string` to follow Rust [API
guidelines](https://rust-lang.github.io/api-guidelines/naming.html#ad-hoc-conversions-follow-as_-to_-into_-conventions-c-conv).
This then triggered the clippy lint
[inherent_to_string](https://rust-lang.github.io/rust-clippy/master/index.html#/inherent_to_string),
which is... correct! The current `CellPath::into_string` is being used
as if it were the `Display` implementation for `CellPath`.
# User-Facing Changes
Breaking API change for `nu-protocol`, since `CellPath::into_string` was
# Description
Use Vec for Closure captures (#10940)
# Description
Changes the `captures` field in `Closure` from a `HashMap` to a `Vec`
and makes `Stack::captures_to_stack` take an owned `Vec` instead of a
borrowed `HashMap`.
This eliminates the conversion to a `Vec` inside `captures_to_stack` and
makes it possible to avoid clones altogether when using an owned
`Closure` (which is the case for most commands). Additionally, using a
`Vec` reduces the size of `Value` by 8 bytes (down to 72).
# User-Facing Changes
- Add `help` option.
- Add a couple more errors for invalid record types.
# Description
# User-Facing Changes
- **BREAKING CHANGE:** `error make` now takes in `span` instead of
`start`/`end`:
  ```Nushell
  error make {
      msg: "Message"
      label: {
          text: "Label text"
          span: (metadata $var).span
      }
  }
  ```
- `error make` now has a `help` argument for custom error help.
Add detailed flag for describe (#10795)
- Add `detailed` flag for `describe`
- Improve detailed describe and better format when running examples.
# Rationale
For now, neither `describe` nor any of the `debug` commands provide an
easy and structured way of inspecting the data's type and more. This
flag provides a structured way of getting such information. Allows also
to avoid the rather hacky solution
```nu
$in | describe | str replace --regex '<.*' ''
```
Spanned Value step 1: span all value cases (#10042)
# Description
This doesn't really do much that the user could see, but it helps get us
ready to do the steps of the refactor to split the span off of Value, so
that values can be spanless. This allows us to have top-level values
that can hold both a Value and a Span, without requiring that all values
have them.
We expect to see significant memory reduction by removing so many
unnecessary spans from values. For example, a table of 100,000 rows and
5 columns would have a savings of ~8megs in just spans that are almost
always duplicated.
Create Record type (#10103)
# Description
This PR creates a new `Record` type to reduce duplicate code and
possibly bugs as well. (This is an edited version of #9648.)
- `Record` implements `FromIterator` and `IntoIterator` and so can be
iterated over or collected into. For example, this helps with
conversions to and from (hash)maps. (Also, no more
`cols.iter().zip(vals)`!)
- `Record` has a `push(col, val)` function to help insure that the
number of columns is equal to the number of values. I caught a few
potential bugs thanks to this (e.g. in the `ls` command).
- Finally, this PR also adds a `record!` macro that helps simplify
record creation. It is used like so:
   ```rust
   record! {
       "key1" => some_value,
       "key2" => Value::string("text", span),
       "key3" => Value::int(optional_int.unwrap_or(0), span),
       "key4" => Value::bool(config.setting, span),
   }
   ```
Since macros hinder formatting, etc., the right hand side values should
be relatively short and sweet like the examples above.
Where possible, prefer `record!` or `.collect()` on an iterator instead
of multiple `Record::push`s, since the first two automatically set the
record capacity and do less work overall.
# User-Facing Changes
Besides the changes in `nu-protocol` the only other breaking changes are
to `nu-table::{ExpandedTable::build_map, JustTable::kv_table}`.
https://github.com/nushell/nushell/pull/9773 introduced constants to
modules and allowed to export them, but only within one level. This PR:
* allows recursive exporting of constants from all submodules
* fixes submodule imports in a list import pattern
* makes sure exported constants are actual constants
Should unblock https://github.com/nushell/nushell/pull/9678
### Example:
```nushell
module spam {
    export module eggs {
        export module bacon {
            export const viking = 'eats'
        }
    }
}

use spam
print $spam.eggs.bacon.viking  # prints 'eats'

use spam [eggs]
print $eggs.bacon.viking  # prints 'eats'

use spam eggs bacon viking
print $viking  # prints 'eats'
```
### Limitation 1:
Considering the above `spam` module, attempting to get `eggs bacon` from
`spam` module doesn't work directly:
```nushell
use spam [ eggs bacon ] # attempts to load `eggs`, then `bacon`
use spam [ "eggs bacon" ] # obviously wrong name for a constant, but doesn't work also for commands
```
Workaround (for example):
```nushell
use spam eggs
use eggs [ bacon ]

print $bacon.viking  # prints 'eats'
```
I'm thinking I'll just leave it in, as you can easily work around this.
It is also a limitation of the import pattern in general, not just
constants.
### Limitation 2:
`overlay use` successfully imports the constants, but `overlay hide`
does not hide them, even though it seems to hide normal variables
successfully. This needs more investigation.
Relative: #8248
After this pr, user can define const variable inside a module.
![image](https://github.com/nushell/nushell/assets/22256154/e3e03e56-c4b5-4144-a944-d1b20bec1cbd)
And user can export const variables, the following screenshot shows how
it works (it follows
https://github.com/nushell/nushell/issues/8248#issuecomment-1637442612):
![image](https://github.com/nushell/nushell/assets/22256154/b2c14760-3f27-41cc-af77-af70a4367f2a)
## About the change
1. To make module support const, we need to change `parse_module_block`
to support `const` keyword.
2. To suport export `const`, we need to make module tracking variables,
so we add `variables` attribute to `Module`
3. During eval, the const variable may not exists in `stack`, because we
don't eval `const` when we define a module, so we need to find variables
which are already registered in `engine_state`
## One more thing to note about the const value.
Consider the following code
```
module foo { const b = 3; export def bar [] { $b } }
use foo bar
const b = 4;
bar
```
The result will be 3 (which is defined in module) rather than 4. I think
it's expected behavior.
It's something like [dynamic
binding](https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/elisp/Dynamic-Binding-Tips.html)
vs [lexical
binding](https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/elisp/Lexical-Binding.html)
in lisp like language, and lexical binding should be right behavior
which generates more predicable result, and it doesn't introduce really
subtle bugs in nushell code.
What if user want dynamic-binding?(For example: the example code returns
`4`)
There is no way to do this, user should consider passing the value as
argument to custom command rather than const.
## TODO
- [X] adding tests for the feature.
- [X] support export const out of module to use.
Remove Signature.vectorizes_over_list entirely (#9777)
# Description
With the current typechecking logic this property has no effect.
It was only used in the example testing, and provided some indication of
this vectorizing property.
With #9742 all commands that previously declared it have explicit list
signatures. If we want to get it back in the future we can reconstruct
it from the signature.
Simplifies the example testing a bit.
# User-Facing Changes
Causes a breaking change for plugins that previously declared it. While
this causes a compile fail, this was already broken by our more
stringent type checking.
This will be a good reminder for plugin authors to update their
signature as well to reflect the more stringent type checking.
Custom command input/output types (#9690)
# Description
This adds input/output types to custom commands. These are input/output
pairs that related an input type to an output type.
For example (a single int-to-int input/output pair):
```
def foo []: int -> int { ... }
```
You can also have multiple input/output pairs:
```
def bar []: [int -> string, string -> list<string>] { ... }
```
These types are checked during definition time in the parser. If the
block does not match the type, the user will get a parser error.
This `:` to begin the input/output signatures should immediately follow
the argument signature as shown above.
The PR also improves type parsing by re-using the shape parser. The
shape parser is now the canonical way to parse types/shapes in user
code.
This PR also splits `extern` into `extern`/`extern-wrapped` because of
the parser limitation that a multi-span argument (which Signature now
is) can't precede an optional argument. `extern-wrapped` now takes the
required block that was previously optional.
# User-Facing Changes
The change to `extern` to split into `extern` and `extern-wrapped` is a
breaking change.
Input output checking (#9680)
# Description
This PR tights input/output type-checking a bit more. There are a lot of
commands that don't have correct input/output types, so part of the
effort is updating them.
This PR now contains updates to commands that had wrong input/output
signatures. It doesn't add examples for these new signatures, but that
can be follow-up work.
BREAKING CHANGE BREAKING CHANGE
This work enforces many more checks on pipeline type correctness than
previous nushell versions. This strictness may uncover incompatibilities
in existing scripts or shortcomings in the type information for internal
commands.
allow mut to take pipelines (#9658)
# Description
This extends the syntax fix for `let` (#9589) to `mut` as well.
Example: `mut x = "hello world" | str length; print $x`
closes #9634
# User-Facing Changes
`mut` now joins `let` in being able to be assigned from a pipeline
Let with pipeline (#9589)
# Description
This changes the default behaviour of `let` to be able to take a
pipeline as its initial value.
For example:
```
> let x = "hello world" | str length
```
This is a change from the existing behaviour, where the right hand side
is assumed to be an expression. Pipelines are more general, and can be
more powerful.
My google foo is failing me, but this also fixes this issue:
```
let x = foo
```
Currently, this reads `foo` as a bareword that gets converted to a
string rather than running the `foo` command. In practice, this is
really annoying and is a really hard to spot bug in a script.
# User-Facing Changes
BREAKING CHANGE BREAKING CHANGE
`let` gains the power to be assigned via a pipeline. However, this
changes the behaviour of `let x = foo` from assigning the string "foo"
to `$x` to being "run the command `foo` and give the result to `$x`"
remove let-env, focus on mutating $env (#9574)
# Description
For years, Nushell has used `let-env` to set a single environment
variable. As our work on scoping continued, we refined what it meant for
a variable to be in scope using `let` but never updated how `let-env`
would work. Instead, `let-env` confusingly created mutations to the
command's copy of `$env`.
So, to help fix the mental model and point people to the right way of
thinking about what changing the environment means, this PR removes
`let-env` to encourage people to think of it as updating the command's
environment variable via mutation.
Before:
```
let-env FOO = "BAR"
```
Now:
```
$env.FOO = "BAR"
```
It's also a good reminder that the environment owned by the command is
in the `$env` variable rather than global like it is in other shells.
# User-Facing Changes
BREAKING CHANGE BREAKING CHANGE
This completely removes `let-env FOO = "BAR"` so that we can focus on
`$env.FOO = "BAR"`.
Test examples of use (#9032)
# Description
Add `test_examples()` to `use` that verifies its examples. For that, add
the necessary definitions and the `PWD` to the `nu-cmd-lang` test
support.
Note: `let-env` is a `nu-command` and thus not accessible from the
`nu-cmd-lang` tests. So replace `let-env` with `$env.<var> =`. This
should be fine, since `let-env` is supposed to be removed before 1.0
anyway.
# User-Facing Changes
Nothing
# Question for reviewer
Is there any particular reason why so many core commands (parser
keywords) don't verify their examples with tests? E.g. `break`, `hide`,
`overlay use`, etc. (I think most of them?). If there is no particular
reason, I'd make a follow up PR to enable tests for as many of them as
possible.
revert: move to ahash (#9464)
This PR reverts https://github.com/nushell/nushell/pull/9391
We try not to revert PRs like this, though after discussion with the
Nushell team, we decided to revert this one.
The main reason is that Nushell, as a codebase, isn't ready for these
kinds of optimisations. It's in the part of the development cycle where
our main focus should be on improving the algorithms inside of Nushell
itself. Once we have matured our algorithms, then we can look for
opportunities to switch out technologies we're using for alternate
forms.
Much of Nushell still has lots of opportunities for tuning the codebase,
paying down technical debt, and making the codebase generally cleaner
and more robust. This should be the focus. Performance improvements
should flow out of that work.
Said another, optimisation that isn't part of tuning the codebase is
premature at this stage. We need to focus on doing the hard work of
making the engine, parser, etc better.
this PR makes nushell use mimalloc as the default allocator, this has
the benefit of reducing startup time on my machine. `17%` on linux and
`22%` on windows, when testing using hyperfine.
the overhead to compile seem to be quite small, aswell as the increase
of binary size quite small
on linux the binary went from `33.1mb` to `33.2mb`
Break up interdependencies of command crates (#9429)
# Description
Make sure that our different crates that contain commands can be
compiled in parallel.
This can under certain circumstances accelerate the compilation with
sufficient multithreading available.
## Details
- Move `help` commands from `nu-cmd-lang` back to `nu-command`
- This also makes sense as the commands are implemented in an
ANSI-terminal specific way
- Make `nu-cmd-lang` only a dev dependency for `nu-command`
- Change context creation helpers for `nu-cmd-extra` and
`nu-cmd-dataframe` to have a consistent api used in
`src/main.rs`:`get_engine_state()`
- `nu-command` now indepedent from `nu-cmd-extra` and `nu-cmd-dataframe`
that are now dependencies of `nu` directly. (change to internal
features)
- Fix tests that previously used `nu-command::create_default_context()`
with replacement functions
## From scratch compilation times:
just debug (dev) build and default features
```
cargo clean --profile dev && cargo build --timings
```
Feature: Userland LazyRecords (#8332)
# Description
Despite the innocent-looking title, this PR involves quite a few backend
In particular, here are a few changes involved:
- The LazyRecord trait now involves a lifetime `'a`, and this lifetime
is used in the return value of `get_column_names`. This means it no
longer returns `'static str`s (but implementations still can return
these). This is more stringent on the consumption side.
- The LazyRecord trait now must be able to clone itself via a new
`clone_value` method (as requiring `Clone` is not object safe). This
pattern is borrowed from `Value::CustomValue`.
- LazyRecord no longer requires being serde serializable and
deserializable.
These, in hand, allow for the following:
- LazyRecord can now clone itself, which means that they don't have to
be collected into a Record when being cloned.
- This is especially useful in Stack, which is cloned on each repl line
and in a few other cases. This would mean that _every_ LazyRecord
instance stored in a variable would be collected in its entirety and
cloned, which can be catastrophic for performance. See: `let nulol =
$nu`.
- LazyRecord's columns don't have to be static, they can have the same
lifetime of the struct itself, so different instances of the same
LazyRecord type can have different columns and values (like the new
`NuLazyRecord`)
- Serialization and deserialization are no longer meaningless, they are
simply less.
I would consider this PR very "drafty", but everything works. It
probably requires some cleanup and testing, though, but I'd like some
eyes and pointers first.
# User-Facing Changes
New command. New restrictions are largely internal. Maybe there are some
plugins affected?
Example of new command's usage:
```
lazy make --columns [a b c] --get-value { |name| print $"getting ($name)"; $name | str upcase }
```
You can also trivially implement something like `lazy make record` to
take a record of closures and turn it into a getter-like lazy struct:
```
def "lazy make record" [
    record: record
] {
    let columns = ($record | columns)

    lazy make --columns $columns --get-value { |col| do ($record | get $col) }
}
```
Open to bikeshedding. `lazy make` is similar to `error make` which is
also in the core commands. I didn't like `make lazy` since it sounded
like some transformation was going on.
# Tour for reviewers
Take a look at LazyMake's examples. They have `None` as the results, as
such they aren't _really_ correct and aren't being tested at all. I
didn't do this because creating the Value::LazyRecord is a little tricky
and didn't want to risk messing it up, especially as the necessary
variables aren't available when creating the examples (like stack and
engine state).
Also take a look at NuLazyRecord's get_value implementation, or in
general. It uses an Arc<Mutex<_>> for the stack, which must be accessed
mutably for eval_block but get_value only provides us with a `&self`.
This is a sad state of affairs, but I don't know if there's a better
way.
On the same code path, we also have pipeline handling, and any pipeline
that isn't a Pipeline::Value will return Value::nothing. I believe
returning a Value::Error is probably better, or maybe some other
handling. Couldn't decide on which ShellError to settle with for that
branch.
The "unfortunate casualty" in the columns.rs file. I'm not sure just how
bad that is, though, I simply had to fight a little with the borrow
checker.
A few leftover comments like derives, comments about the now
non-existing serde requirements, and impls. I'll definitely get around
to those eventually but they're in atm
Should NuLazyRecord implement caching? I'm leaning heavily towards
**yes**, this was one of the main reasons not to use a record of
closures (besides convenience), but maybe it could be opt-out. I'd
wonder about its implementation too, but a simple way would be to move a
HashMap into the mutex state and keep cached values there.
Add extern def which allows raw arguments (#8956)
# Description
Extends the `extern` syntax to allow commands that accept raw arguments.
This is mainly added to allow wrapper type scripts for external
commands.
This is an example on how this can be used:
```nushell
extern foo [...rest] {
  print ($rest | str join ',' )
}
foo --bar baz -- -q -u -x
# => --bar,baz,--,-q,-u,-x
```
(It's only possible to accept a single ...varargs argument in the
signature)
# User-Facing Changes
No breaking changes, just extra possibilities.
# Tests + Formatting
Added a test for this new behaviour and ran the toolkit pr checker
# After Submitting
This is advanced functionality but it should be documented, I will open
a new PR on the book for that
Add more examples to help use (#9024)
# Description
The `members` parameter of `use` is specified as type `any`, but it's
really a string or list of strings or `*`. So add some examples that
mention what you can specify for `members`.
Also mention `help modules` and `help std`, since you probably want to
use the standard library or another defined modules.
Sidenote: I tried to run the examples for `use` as tests like is done
for the other commands. That panics with `missing module command`. I
assume this is known.
# User-Facing Changes
`help use` now looks like this:
```nushell
Use definitions from a module, making them available in your shell.

See `help std` for the standard library module.
See `help modules` to list all available modules.

This command is a parser keyword. For details, check:
  https://www.nushell.sh/book/thinking_in_nu.html

Usage:
  > use <module> (members)

Flags:
  -h, --help - Display the help message for this command

Parameters:
  module <string>: Module or module file
  (optional) members <any>: Which members of the module to import

Examples:
  Define a custom command in a module and call it
  > module spam { export def foo [] { "foo" } }; use spam foo; foo
  foo

  Define a custom command that participates in the environment in a module and call it
  > module foo { export def-env bar [] { let-env FOO_BAR = "BAZ" } }; use foo bar; bar; $env.FOO_BAR
  BAZ

  Use a plain module name to import its definitions qualified by the module name
  > module spam { export def foo [] { "foo" }; export def bar [] { "bar" } }; use spam; (spam foo) + (spam bar)
  foobar

  Specify * to use all definitions in a module
  > module spam { export def foo [] { "foo" }; export def bar [] { "bar" } }; use spam *; (foo) + (bar)
  foobar

  To use commands with spaces, like subcommands, surround them with quotes
  > module spam { export def 'foo bar' [] { "baz" } }; use spam 'foo bar'; foo bar
  baz

  To use multiple definitions from a module, wrap them in a list
  > module spam { export def foo [] { "foo" }; export def 'foo bar' [] { "baz" } }; use spam ['foo', 'foo bar']; (foo) + (foo bar)
  foobaz

allow records to have type annotations (#8914)
# Description
follow up to #8529
cleaned up version of #8892

- the original syntax is okay
```nu
def okay [rec: record] {}
```
- you can now add type annotations for fields if you know
  them before hand
```nu
def okay [rec: record<name: string>] {}
```

- you can specify multiple fields
```nu
def okay [person: record<name: string age: int>] {}
# an optional comma is allowed
def okay [person: record<name: string, age: int>] {}
```

- if annotations are specified, any use of the command will be type
  checked against the specified type
```nu
def unwrap [result: record<ok: bool, value: any>] {}
unwrap {ok: 2, value: "value"}
# errors with
Error: nu::parser::type_mismatch
  × Type mismatch.
   ╭─[entry #4:1:1]
 1 │ unwrap {ok: 2, value: "value"}
   ·         ───────┬─────
   ·                    ╰── expected record<ok: bool, value: any>, found record<ok: int, value: string>
   ╰────
```
> here the error is in the `ok` field, since `any` is coerced into any
type
> as a result `unwrap {ok: true, value: "value"}` is okay

- the key must be a string, either quoted or unquoted
```nu
def err [rec: record<{}: list>] {}
# errors with
Error:
  × `record` type annotations key not string
   ╭─[entry #7:1:1]
 1 │ def unwrap [result: record<{}: bool, value: any>] {}
   ·                            ─┬
   ·                             ╰── must be a string
   ╰────
```

- a key doesn't have to have a type in which case it is assumed to be
`any`
```nu
def okay [person: record<name age>] {}
def okay [person: record<name: string age>] {}
```

- however, if you put a colon, you have to specify a type
```nu
def err [person: record<name: >] {}
# errors with
Error: nu::parser::parse_mismatch
  × Parse mismatch during operation.
   ╭─[entry #12:1:1]
 1 │ def unwrap [res: record<name: >] { $res }
   ·                             ┬
   ·                             ╰── expected type after colon
   ╰────
```

# User-Facing Changes
**[BREAKING CHANGES]**
- this change adds a field to `SyntaxShape::Record` so any plugins that
used it will have to update and include the field. though if you are
unsure of the type the record expects, `SyntaxShape::Record(vec![])`
will suffice

Move CLI related commands to nu-cli (#8832)
# Description

Part of the larger cratification effort.

Moves all `reedline` or shell line editor specific commands to `nu-cli`.

## From `nu-cmd-lang`:
- `commandline`
- This shouldn't have moved there. Doesn't directly depend on reedline
but assumes parts in the engine state that are specific to the use of
reedline or a REPL

## From `nu-command`:
- `keybindings` and subcommands
  - `keybindings default`
  - `keybindings list`
  - `keybindings listen`
    - very `reedline` specific
- `history`
  - needs `reedline`
- `history session`

## internal use
Instead of having a separate `create_default_context()` that calls
`nu-command`'s `create_default_context()`, I added a `add_cli_context()`
that updates an `EngineState`

# User-Facing Changes

None

## Build time comparison

`cargo build --timings` from a `cargo clean --profile dev`

### total
main: 64 secs
this: 59 secs

### `nu-command` build time

branch | total| codegen | fraction
---|---|---|---
main | 14.0s | 6.2s | (44%)
this | 12.5s | 5.5s | (44%)

`nu-cli` depends on `nu-command` at the moment.
Thus it is built during the code-gen phase of `nu-command` (on 16
virtual cores)

# Tests + Formatting

I removed the `test_example()` facilities for now as we had not run any
of the commands in an `Example` test and importing the right context for
those tests seemed more of a hassle than the duplicated
`test_examples()` implementations in `nu-cmd-lang` and `nu-command`

Refactor to support multiple parse errors (#8765)
# Description

This is a pretty heavy refactor of the parser to support multiple parser
errors. It has a few issues we should address before landing:

- [x] In some cases, error quality has gotten worse `1 / "bob"` for
example
- [x] if/else isn't currently parsing correctly
- probably others

# User-Facing Changes

This may have error quality degradation as we adjust to the new error
reporting mechanism.
