prepare next version: update regexes (#14170)
# Objective

- The post release version bump job failed:
https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/actions/runs/9799332118
- This is because main didn't update to 0.14 as that happened in a
branch

## Solution

- Update the regexes to work with the -dev suffix

meta: Add Showcase section to PR template (#11750)
# Objective

Oftentimes I find myself reading through a PR and not quite
understanding what's going on. Even if it's super detailed, it can
sometimes be difficult to imagine what the end result of the PR might
look like.

For example, #10756 clearly communicates its goals and contains a
descriptive Changelog. However, I was still a bit lost as to what a user
might see from the change until I saw the dedicated example in the diff.

## Solution

At the risk of giving contributors more work, I think a dedicated
`Showcase` section could be really nice.

Along with providing reviewers stumbling on the PR with a "tangible
summary" of the change, it should also help out when working on the
release post. Sometimes someone other than the PR's author has to write
up a blog section on the PR. This can be somewhat daunting to people
wanting to contribute in that effort as they have to rely on the
Migration Guide giving a decent example (assuming it's a breaking
change), piecing together the other sections into a sensible example
themselves, or manually reading through the diff.

Theoretically, this new `Showcase` section would be more of an
encouragement than a strict requirement. And it's probably only going to
be useful where there is something to showcase (e.g. visual changes, API
changes, new features, etc.).

### Bikeshedding

- **Naming.** I also considered `Demo` and `Example`, but there may be
others we prefer. I chose `Showcase` to communicate the feeling of fun
and appreciation for the work contributors put in.
- **Position.** I placed the section right above the `Changelog` section
since I felt it made sense to move from the details in `Solution` to a
brief example in `Showcase` to a tl;dr of the changes in `Changelog`
- **Phrasing.** We can also bikeshed the bullet points and phrasing of
each as well.

Don't deploy docs when working on a fork (#13278)
# Objective

- Some developers enable Github Actions for their fork and commit
directly to main. This triggers the `docs.yml` action, which attempts to
deploy the documentation even if Github Pages is not enabled. (It also
creates a `CNAME` file specific to Bevy and should not be used in forks,
even for testing.)
- For an example, see [this
run](https://github.com/tychedelia/bevy/actions/runs/8978912060/job/24660082729).

## Solution

- Only attempt to deploy docs when running from the main Bevy
repository.
- This does not affect us checking `cargo doc` on pull requests, since
that it done in `ci.yml`.

## Testing

It's difficult to test this, but you'd probably:

1. Fork Bevy
2. Cherry pick this PR's commits onto the main branch of your fork.
3. Push another commit to the main branch, triggering Github Actions.
4. Check the Github Actions job summary to ensure that the
`build-and-deploy` job is skipped.

new format for ci config file (#13154)
# Objective

- Current config file is hard to extend

## Solution

- Instead of an hard coded list of field, the file now has a list of
`(frame, event)`, and will deal with know events (exiting or taking a
screenshot), or send an event for others that can be dealt by third
party plugins

Small CI improvements (#13060)
# Objective

- Some CI jobs specifically use `macos-14`, as compared to the default
`macos-latest`.
- `macos-latest` is equivalent to `macos-12`, but may be updated in the
future.
- The CI job that tests on the minimum supported Rust version (MSRV)
uses environmental variables to save the toolchain version.
  - This specific usage is what step outputs were designed for.
- Both do the same thing, but step outputs can be checked by the [Github
Actions VSCode
Extension](https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=GitHub.vscode-github-actions).
- Some workflows have a `NIGHTLY_TOOLCHAIN` variable that let us pin the
nightly version, in case a new release breaks CI.

## Solution

- Document why certain actions required `macos-14`.
- Switch MSRV step to use step outputs.
- Add a small comment documenting the purpose of the `NIGHTLY_TOOLCHAIN`
environmental variable.

Remove unused nightly toolchain environmental variable (#13037)
# Objective

- Many of our CI workflows contain a `NIGHTLY_TOOLCHAIN` environmental
variable.
- This specifies which nightly to use. If there is a bug in one of the
nightlies, we can pin the toolchain to be an earlier version.
- Both the daily and weekly workflows do not use the nightly compiler,
but still have a `NIGHTLY_TOOLCHAIN` variable.

## Solution

- Delete the unused variable.

Create custom action for installing Linux dependencies (#12850)
# Objective

- There are several occurrences where different actions install alsa,
udev, and various other libraries for Linux.
- This is repetitive and can be an issue if the dependencies required by
Bevy ever change.

## Solution

- Create a custom action for installing Linux dependencies.
- It can be used by adding `- uses:
./.github/actions/install-linux-deps`.
- It supports configuring which libraries are installed using the `with`
property.
- It does nothing if not run on Linux, so workflows don't need to worry
about adding `if: ${{ runner.os == 'linux' }}`.

## Discussion

- The only instance where this action is not used cleanly is for the
`run-examples-linux-vulkan` verification job. I need to investigate
further the flags and dependencies that it installs.

## Additional Possibilities
The action currently creates an issue if anything fails. The issue could

issue labels would have to add it.

Another possibility would be to use discord webhooks. That would need
somebody with the access to create webhooks on discord and somebody with
the rights to connect that webhook to this repo,

Get Bevy building for WebAssembly with multithreading (#12205)
# Objective

This gets Bevy building on Wasm when the `atomics` flag is enabled. This
does not yet multithread Bevy itself, but it allows Bevy users to use a
crate like `wasm_thread` to spawn their own threads and manually
parallelize work. This is a first step towards resolving #4078 . Also
fixes #9304.

This provides a foothold so that Bevy contributors can begin to think
about multithreaded Wasm's constraints and Bevy can work towards changes
to get the engine itself multithreaded.

Some flags need to be set on the Rust compiler when compiling for Wasm
multithreading. Here's what my build script looks like, with the correct
flags set, to test out Bevy examples on web:

```bash
set -e
RUSTFLAGS='-C target-feature=+atomics,+bulk-memory,+mutable-globals' \
     cargo build --example breakout --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -Z build-std=std,panic_abort --release
 wasm-bindgen --out-name wasm_example \
   --out-dir examples/wasm/target \
   --target web target/wasm32-unknown-unknown/release/examples/breakout.wasm
 devserver --header Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy='same-origin' --header Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy='require-corp' --path examples/wasm
```

A few notes:

1. `cpal` crashes immediately when the `atomics` flag is set. That is
patched in https://github.com/RustAudio/cpal/pull/837, but not yet in
the latest crates.io release.

That can be temporarily worked around by patching Cpal like so:
```toml
[patch.crates-io]
cpal = { git = "https://github.com/RustAudio/cpal" }
```

2. When testing out `wasm_thread` you need to enable the `es_modules`
feature.

## Solution

The largest obstacle to compiling Bevy with `atomics` on web is that
`wgpu` types are _not_ Send and Sync. Longer term Bevy will need an
approach to handle that, but in the near term Bevy is already configured
to be single-threaded on web.

Therefor it is enough to wrap `wgpu` types in a
`send_wrapper::SendWrapper` that _is_ Send / Sync, but panics if
accessed off the `wgpu` thread.

---

## Changelog

- `wgpu` types that are not `Send` are wrapped in
`send_wrapper::SendWrapper` on Wasm + 'atomics'
- CommandBuffers are not generated in parallel on Wasm + 'atomics'

## Questions
- Bevy should probably add CI checks to make sure this doesn't regress.
Should that go in this PR or a separate PR? **Edit:** Added checks to
build Wasm with atomics

Make feature(doc_auto_cfg) work (#12642)
# Objective

- In #12366 `![cfg_attr(docsrs, feature(doc_auto_cfg))] `was added. But
to apply it it needs `--cfg=docsrs` in rustdoc-args.

## Solution

- Apply `--cfg=docsrs` to all crates and CI.

I also added `[package.metadata.docs.rs]` to all crates to avoid adding
code behind a feature and forget adding the metadata.

Update engine_style_guide with guideline to link to the error code when using bevy engine error codes (#12253)
# Objective

- https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/pull/12165 created the expectation
that returned bevy errors will include a link to the relevant bevy
error. That expectation is not formally established in the contributing
guidelines which will lead to it not being upheld in future PRs that use
the bevy error codes. This PR adds it to engine_style_guide.md to
establish that convention officially

Update wgpu to v0.19.3 and unpin web-sys. (#12247)
# Objective

This PR unpins `web-sys` so that unrelated projects that have
`bevy_render` in their workspace can finally update their `web-sys`.
More details in and fixes #12246.

## Solution

* Update `wgpu` from 0.19.1 to 0.19.3.
* Remove the `web-sys` pin.
* Update docs and wasm helper to remove the now-stale
`--cfg=web_sys_unstable_apis` Rust flag.

---

## Changelog

Updated `wgpu` to v0.19.3 and removed `web-sys` pin.

add cancel in progress support to automated CI checks (#11130)
# Objective

When working on PRs, I'll often find that one of the early CI checks
fails, and work on fixing the result, but when I push the earlier
commits are still being processed by the CI. This would mean that if a
new commit is pushed while another CI process is already running on that
branch, the first set of jobs will be cancelled - reducing wasted
resources and wait time for CI on the latest commits.

## Solution

The solution is simply adding Github's concurrency groups to every
relevant workflow.

CI: run long tasks on new macOS runners (#12133)
# Objective

- Make PR CI faster

## Solution

- Run example on macOS, Windows examples are now run on PR merge
instead. This is the biggest change in duration
- Run miri on macOS. It doesn't change much the duration, but will free
a runner 2 minutes earlier
- Don't run check-doc job as it hangs on macOS. Don't move too many job
as there are less macOS-14 runners globally available and they are more
limited

Add typos - Source code spell checker (#12036)
# Objective

- Avoid misspellings throughout the codebase by using
[`typos`](https://github.com/crate-ci/typos) in CI

Inspired by https://github.com/gfx-rs/wgpu/pull/5191

Typos is a minimal code speller written in rust that finds and corrects
spelling mistakes among source code.
 - Fast enough to run on monorepos
 - Low false positives so you can run on PRs

## Solution

- Use
[typos-action](https://github.com/marketplace/actions/typos-action) in
CI
- Add how to use typos in the Contribution Guide

Check cfg during CI and fix feature typos (#12103)
# Objective

- Add the new `-Zcheck-cfg` checks to catch more warnings
- Fixes #12091

## Solution

- Create a new `cfg-check` to the CI that runs `cargo check -Zcheck-cfg
--workspace` using cargo nightly (and fails if there are warnings)
- Fix all warnings generated by the new check

---

## Changelog

- Remove all redundant imports
- Fix cfg wasm32 targets
- Add 3 dead code exceptions (should StandardColor be unused?)
- Convert ios_simulator to a feature (I'm not sure if this is the right
way to do it, but the check complained before)

Bump peter-evans/create-pull-request from 5 to 6 (#11712)
Bumps
[peter-evans/create-pull-request](https://github.com/peter-evans/create-pull-request)
from 5 to 6.
<details>
<summary>Release notes</summary>
<p><em>Sourced from <a
href="https://github.com/peter-evans/create-pull-request/releases">peter-evans/create-pull-request's
releases</a>.</em></p>
<blockquote>
<h2>Create Pull Request v6.0.0</h2>
<h2>Behaviour changes</h2>
<ul>
<li>The default values for <code>author</code> and
<code>committer</code> have changed. See &quot;What's new&quot; below
for details. If you are overriding the default values you will not be
affected by this change.</li>
<li>On completion, the action now removes the temporary git remote
configuration it adds when using <code>push-to-fork</code>. This should
not affect you unless you were using the temporary configuration for
some other purpose after the action completes.</li>
</ul>
<h2>What's new</h2>
<ul>
<li>Updated runtime to Node.js 20
<ul>
<li>The action now requires a minimum version of <a
href="https://github.com/actions/runner/releases/tag/v2.308.0">v2.308.0</a>
for the Actions runner. Update self-hosted runners to v2.308.0 or later
to ensure compatibility.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>The default value for <code>author</code> has been changed to
<code>${{ github.actor }} &lt;${{ github.actor_id }}+${{ github.actor
}}@users.noreply.github.com&gt;</code>. The change adds the <code>${{
github.actor_id }}+</code> prefix to the email address to align with
GitHub's standard format for the author email address.</li>
<li>The default value for <code>committer</code> has been changed to
<code>github-actions[bot]
&lt;41898282+github-actions[bot]@users.noreply.github.com&gt;</code>.
This is to align with the default GitHub Actions bot user account.</li>
<li>Adds input <code>git-token</code>, the <a
href="https://docs.github.com/en/github/authenticating-to-github/creating-a-personal-access-token">Personal
Access Token (PAT)</a> that the action will use for git operations. This
input defaults to the value of <code>token</code>. Use this input if you
would like the action to use a different token for git operations than
the one used for the GitHub API.</li>
<li><code>push-to-fork</code> now supports pushing to sibling
repositories in the same network.</li>
<li>Previously, when using <code>push-to-fork</code>, the action did not
remove temporary git remote configuration it adds during execution. This
has been fixed and the configuration is now removed when the action
completes.</li>
<li>If the pull request body is truncated due to exceeding the maximum
length, the action will now suffix the body with the message
&quot;...<em>[Pull request body truncated]</em>&quot; to indicate that
the body has been truncated.</li>
<li>The action now uses <code>--unshallow</code> only when necessary,
rather than as a default argument of <code>git fetch</code>. This should
improve performance, particularly for large git repositories with
extensive commit history.</li>
<li>The action can now be executed on one GitHub server and create pull
requests on a <em>different</em> GitHub server. Server products include
GitHub hosted (github.com), GitHub Enterprise Server (GHES), and GitHub
Enterprise Cloud (GHEC). For example, the action can be executed on
GitHub hosted and create pull requests on a GHES or GHEC instance.</li>

run examples on macOS to validate PRs (#11630)
# Objective

- CI doesn't validate running examples on macOS
- GitHub now has free m1 runners with a virtualised GPU
https://github.blog/changelog/2024-01-30-github-actions-introducing-the-new-m1-macos-runner-available-to-open-source/

## Solution

- Add a job to run examples on macOS when trying to merge a PR
- Add a patch to disable audio in CI as it timeouts after 15 minutes on
macOS, and fails anyway on the other runners

documentation in CI: remove lock file (#11507)
# Objective

- Try to fix deploying docs in CI
- Alternative to https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/pull/11502

## Solution

- The only issue I could find is the lock file with invalid permissions,
try to remove it
- upload action was doing permissions cleanup in v1, that was removed in
v2. we're now using v3

Unpin nightly for miri (#11462)
# Objective

- Using the latest nightly for `miri` is generally desirable as we want
to catch regressions upstream or new problems quickly
- https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/120123 should be merged now, so
it should work.

## Solution

- Revert #11421.

Bump dev-docs pages actions (#11418)
# Objective

- `actions/upload-pages-artifact` and `actions/deploy-pages` are
outdated.
- Alternative to #11253 and #11252.

## Solution

- Bump the version of both actions.

---

There appear to be no user-facing changes. They just both need to be
updated together. (The `actions: read` permission was a bug that was
fixed later.)

Miri is failing on latest nightly: pin nightly to last known working version (#11421)
# Objective

- https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/118553 seems to have broken
miri test

## Solution

- Pin nightly to before it was merged

Publish dev-docs with Github Pages artifacts (2nd attempt) (#10892)
Supersedes #10888.

# Objective

Closes #10821

## Solution

- Replaced
[JamesIves/github-pages-deploy-action](https://github.com/JamesIves/github-pages-deploy-action)
with
[actions/upload-pages-artifact](https://github.com/actions/upload-pages-artifact)
and [actions/deploy-pages](https://github.com/actions/deploy-pages).

## Notes

- I made this workflow possible to run through dispatch
(`workflow_dispatch`), in case something goes wrong.
- I restricted the permissions to just the things Github Pages needs.
- I made it so that only one deployments can happen at a time, the other
deployment requests will be queued up and the latest one will be run.

Standardize toml format with taplo (#10594)
# Objective

- Standardize fmt for toml files

## Solution

- Add [taplo](https://taplo.tamasfe.dev/) to CI (check for fmt and diff
for toml files), for context taplo is used by the most popular extension
in VScode [Even Better
TOML](https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=tamasfe.even-better-toml
- Add contribution section to explain toml fmt with taplo.

Now to pass CI you need to run `taplo fmt --option indent_string=" "` or
if you use vscode have the `Even Better TOML` extension with 4 spaces
for indent

wgpu 0.17 (#9302)
~~Currently blocked on an upstream bug that causes crashes when
minimizing/resizing on dx12 https://github.com/gfx-rs/wgpu/issues/3967~~
wgpu 0.17.1 is out which fixes it

# Objective

Keep wgpu up to date.

## Solution

Update wgpu and naga_oil.

Currently this depends on an unreleased (and unmerged) branch of
naga_oil, and hasn't been properly tested yet.

The wgpu side of this seems to have been an extremely trivial upgrade
(all the upgrade work seems to be in naga_oil). This also lets us remove
the workarounds for pack/unpack4x8unorm in the SSAO shaders.

Lets us close the dx12 part of
https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/issues/8888

related: https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/issues/9304

---

## Changelog

Update to wgpu 0.17 and naga_oil 0.9

run mobile tests on more devices / OS versions (#9936)
# Objective

- run mobile tests on more devices / OS versions

## Solution

- Add more recent iOS devices / OS versions
- Add older Android devices / OS versions

You can check the results of a recent run on those devices here:

Only run some workflows on the bevy repo (not forks) (#9872)
# Objective

Eliminate unnecessary Actions CI builds on forks, such as:
- Daily builds, which are a waste of compute on forks, even if they
succeed (although the Android build fails)
- Administrative builds that attempt to deploy something

In both the cases above, forks get CI failures that need to be ignored.
It looks like this:

<img width="1178" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/assets/5838512/6365059a-1170-4bba-9c60-3e252ae7779f">

src="https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/assets/5838512/ab824a0b-5202-42f7-a24f-95c5cd53376c">

## Solution

- [Only run some jobs when they are in the `bevyengine/bevy`
repo.](https://docs.github.com/en/actions/using-workflows/workflow-syntax-for-github-actions#example-only-run-job-for-specific-repository)
- Leave the rest of the workflows alone (you still get a full set of CI
for pull requests, for example)

Check for bevy_internal imports in CI (#9612)
# Objective

- Avoid using bevy_internal imports in examples.

## Solution

- Add CI to check for bevy_internal imports like suggested in
https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/pull/9547#issuecomment-1689377999
- Fix another import

I don't know much about CI so I don't know if this is the better
approach, but I think is better than doing a pull request every time I
found this lol, any suggestion is welcome.

switch CI jobs between windows and linux for example execution (#9489)
# Objective

- Example execution on linux/vulkan on CI is segfaulting for unclear
reasons
- This makes a lot of noise on PRs

## Solution

- Switch example execution on Linux to validation jobs (on PR merged).
It will still crash but not block merging, and we'll know when it's
fixed
- Switch example execution on Windows to CI jobs (on PR push). It's a
bit longer than on Linux but provides a useful status
- Disable job commenting on PR with job execution to reduce noise

Slightly better message when contributor modifies examples template (#9372)
# Objective

Provide a slightly better message when a contributor needs to update the
generated example readme file for [any number of
reasons](https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/pull/9372#discussion_r1285876202)
but hasn't added any examples.

This recently happened here:
https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/pull/9370#issuecomment-1666776092

The contributor modified the readme template and is being told that they
added an example.

## Solution

The advice given is still correct. Just change the message so that it's
not accusing the contributor of adding an example.

It may be possible to instead add more specific messages instead if
someone is motivated to do that.

edit: reworked this whole PR text

only check for bans if the dependency tree changed (#9252)
# Objective

- CI job `check-bans` fails often for unrelated reasons to a PR. Reduce
those failures

## Solution

- Currently, the job only runs if a `Cargo.toml` file changed. This PR
would run the job only if the output of `cargo tree --depth 3` is
different in a PR from main. the job would still always run on main

Webgpu support (#8336)
# Objective

- Support WebGPU
- alternative to #5027 that doesn't need any async / await
- fixes #8315
- Surprise fix #7318

## Solution

### For async renderer initialisation

- Update the plugin lifecycle:
  - app builds the plugin
    - calls `plugin.build`
    - registers the plugin
  - app starts the event loop
- event loop waits for `ready` of all registered plugins in the same
order
    - returns `true` by default
- then call all `finish` then all `cleanup` in the same order as
registered
  - then execute the schedule

In the case of the renderer, to avoid anything async:
- building the renderer plugin creates a detached task that will send
back the initialised renderer through a mutex in a resource
- `ready` will wait for the renderer to be present in the resource
- `finish` will take that renderer and place it in the expected
resources by other plugins
- other plugins (that expect the renderer to be available) `finish` are
called and they are able to set up their pipelines
- `cleanup` is called, only custom one is still for pipeline rendering

### For WebGPU support

- update the `build-wasm-example` script to support passing `--api
webgpu` that will build the example with WebGPU support
- feature for webgl2 was always enabled when building for wasm. it's now
in the default feature list and enabled on all platforms, so check for
this feature must also check that the target_arch is `wasm32`

---

## Migration Guide

- `Plugin::setup` has been renamed `Plugin::cleanup`
- `Plugin::finish` has been added, and plugins adding pipelines should
do it in this function instead of `Plugin::build`
```rust
// Before
impl Plugin for MyPlugin {
    fn build(&self, app: &mut App) {
        app.insert_resource::<MyResource>
            .add_systems(Update, my_system);
        let render_app = match app.get_sub_app_mut(RenderApp) {
            Ok(render_app) => render_app,
            Err(_) => return,
        };
        render_app
            .init_resource::<RenderResourceNeedingDevice>()
            .init_resource::<OtherRenderResource>();
    }
}
// After
impl Plugin for MyPlugin {
    fn build(&self, app: &mut App) {
        app.insert_resource::<MyResource>
            .add_systems(Update, my_system);
        let render_app = match app.get_sub_app_mut(RenderApp) {
            Ok(render_app) => render_app,
            Err(_) => return,
        };
        render_app
            .init_resource::<OtherRenderResource>();
    }
    fn finish(&self, app: &mut App) {
        let render_app = match app.get_sub_app_mut(RenderApp) {
            Ok(render_app) => render_app,
            Err(_) => return,
        };
        render_app
            .init_resource::<RenderResourceNeedingDevice>();
    }
}
Take example screenshots in CI (#8488)
# Objective
- I want to take screenshots of examples in CI to help with validation
of changes
## Solution
- Can override how much time is updated per frame
- Can specify on which frame to take a screenshots
- Save screenshots in CI
I reused the `TimeUpdateStrategy::ManualDuration` to be able to set the
time update strategy to a fixed duration every frame. Its previous
meaning didn't make much sense to me. This change makes it possible to
have screenshots that are exactly the same across runs.
If this gets merged, I'll add visual comparison of screenshots between
runs to ensure nothing gets broken
## Migration Guide
* `TimeUpdateStrategy::ManualDuration` meaning has changed. Instead of
setting time to `Instant::now()` plus the given duration, it sets time
to last update plus the given duration.
Bump peter-evans/create-pull-request from 4 to 5 (#8343)
Bumps
[peter-evans/create-pull-request](https://github.com/peter-evans/create-pull-request)
from 4 to 5.
releases</a>.</em></p>
<blockquote>
<h2>Create Pull Request v5.0.0</h2>
<h2>Behaviour changes</h2>
<ul>
<li>The action will no longer leave the local repository checked out on
the pull request <code>branch</code>. Instead, it will leave the
repository checked out on the branch or commit that it was when the
action started.</li>
<li>When using <code>add-paths</code>, uncommitted changes will no
longer be destroyed. They will be stashed and restored at the end of the
action run.</li>
</ul>
<h2>What's new</h2>
<ul>
<li>Adds input <code>body-path</code>, the path to a file containing the
pull request body.</li>
<li>At the end of the action run the local repository is now checked out
on the branch or commit that it was when the action started.</li>
<li>Any uncommitted tracked or untracked changes are now stashed and
restored at the end of the action run. Currently, this can only occur
when using the <code>add-paths</code> input, which allows for changes to
not be committed. Previously, any uncommitted changes would be
destroyed.</li>
<li>The proxy implementation has been revised but is not expected to
have any change in behaviour. It continues to support the standard
environment variables <code>http_proxy</code>, <code>https_proxy</code>
and <code>no_proxy</code>.</li>
<li>Now sets the git <code>safe.directory</code> configuration for the
local repository path. The configuration is removed when the action
completes. Fixes issue <a
href="https://redirect.github.com/peter-evans/create-pull-request/issues/1170">peter-evans/create-pull-request#1170</a>.</li>
<li>Now determines the git directory path using the <code>git rev-parse
--git-dir</code> command. This allows users with custom repository
configurations to use the action.</li>
<li>Improved handling of the <code>team-reviewers</code> input and
associated errors.</li>
</ul>
Add a performance regression issue template (#8279)
# Objective
Closes #7821. A good chunk of performance related issues filed are tough
to take action on without much deeper investigation by the author, who
may or may not be responsive after filing the issue.
## Solution
Add a performance regression issue template and use it to direct users
to take a more proactive role in investigating the source of the
regression.
daily job running mobile example on real devices (#8216)
# Objective
- Test mobile example on real devices
## Solution
- Use [BrowserStack](https://www.browserstack.com) to have access to
[real
devices](https://www.browserstack.com/list-of-browsers-and-platforms/app_automate)
- [App Automate](https://www.browserstack.com/app-automate) to run the
example
- [App Percy](https://www.browserstack.com/app-percy) to compare the
screenshot
- Added a daily/manual CI job that will build for iOS and Android, send
the apps to BrowserStack, run the app on one iOS device and one Android
device, capture a screenshot, send it for visual validation, and archive
it in the GitHub action
Example run: https://github.com/mockersf/bevy/actions/runs/4521883534
They currently have a bug with the settings to view snapshots, they
should be public. I'll raise it to them, and if they don't fix it in
time it's possible to work around for everyone to view the results
through their API.
@cart to get this to work, you'll need
- to set up an account on BrowserStack
- add the secrets `BROWSERSTACK_USERNAME` and `BROWSERSTACK_ACCESS_KEY`
to the Bevy repo
- create a project in Percy
- add the secret `PERCY_TOKEN` to the Bevy repo and modify the project
# Objective
- Improve lighting; especially reflections.
- Closes https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/issues/4581.
## Solution
- Implement environment maps, providing better ambient light.
- Add microfacet multibounce approximation for specular highlights from Filament.
- Occlusion is no longer incorrectly applied to direct lighting. It now only applies to diffuse indirect light. Unsure if it's also supposed to apply to specular indirect light - the glTF specification just says "indirect light". In the case of ambient occlusion, for instance, that's usually only calculated as diffuse though. For now, I'm choosing to apply this just to indirect diffuse light, and not specular.
- Modified the PBR example to use an environment map, and have labels.
- Added `FallbackImageCubemap`.
## Implementation
- IBL technique references can be found in environment_map.wgsl.
- It's more accurate to use a LUT for the scale/bias. Filament has a good reference on generating this LUT. For now, I just used an analytic approximation.
 - For now, environment maps must first be prefiltered outside of bevy using a 3rd party tool. See the `EnvironmentMap` documentation.
- Eventually, we should have our own prefiltering code, so that we can have dynamically changing environment maps, as well as let users drop in an HDR image and use asset preprocessing to create the needed textures using only bevy.
---
## Changelog
- Added an `EnvironmentMapLight` camera component that adds additional ambient light to a scene.
- StandardMaterials will now appear brighter and more saturated at high roughness, due to internal material changes. This is more physically correct.
- Fixed StandardMaterial occlusion being incorrectly applied to direct lighting.
- Added `FallbackImageCubemap`.
206c7ce219 Migrate engine to Schedule v3 (#7267)
Huge thanks to @maniwani, @devil-ira, @hymm, @cart, @superdump and @jakobhellermann for the help with this PR.
# Objective
- Followup #6587.
- Minimal integration for the Stageless Scheduling RFC: https://github.com/bevyengine/rfcs/pull/45
## Solution
- [x]  Remove old scheduling module
- [x] Migrate new methods to no longer use extension methods
- [x] Fix compiler errors
- [x] Fix benchmarks
- [x] Fix examples
- [x] Fix docs
- [x] Fix tests
## Changelog
### Added
- a large number of methods on `App` to work with schedules ergonomically
- the `CoreSchedule` enum
- `App::add_extract_system` via the `RenderingAppExtension` trait extension method
- the private `prepare_view_uniforms` system now has a public system set for scheduling purposes, called `ViewSet::PrepareUniforms`
### Removed
- stages, and all code that mentions stages
- states have been dramatically simplified, and no longer use a stack
- `RunCriteriaLabel`
- `AsSystemLabel` trait
- `on_hierarchy_reports_enabled` run criteria (now just uses an ad hoc resource checking run condition)
- systems in `RenderSet/Stage::Extract` no longer warn when they do not read data from the main world
- `RunCriteriaLabel`
- `transform_propagate_system_set`: this was a nonstandard pattern that didn't actually provide enough control. The systems are already `pub`: the docs have been updated to ensure that the third-party usage is clear.
### Changed
- `System::default_labels` is now `System::default_system_sets`.
- `App::add_default_labels` is now `App::add_default_sets`
- `CoreStage` and `StartupStage` enums are now `CoreSet` and `StartupSet`
- `App::add_system_set` was renamed to `App::add_systems`
- The `StartupSchedule` label is now defined as part of the `CoreSchedules` enum
-  `.label(SystemLabel)` is now referred to as `.in_set(SystemSet)`
- `SystemLabel` trait was replaced by `SystemSet`
- `SystemTypeIdLabel<T>` was replaced by `SystemSetType<T>`
- The `ReportHierarchyIssue` resource now has a public constructor (`new`), and implements `PartialEq`
- Fixed time steps now use a schedule (`CoreSchedule::FixedTimeStep`) rather than a run criteria.
- Adding rendering extraction systems now panics rather than silently failing if no subapp with the `RenderApp` label is found.
- the `calculate_bounds` system, with the `CalculateBounds` label, is now in `CoreSet::Update`, rather than in `CoreSet::PostUpdate` before commands are applied.
- `SceneSpawnerSystem` now runs under `CoreSet::Update`, rather than `CoreStage::PreUpdate.at_end()`.
- `bevy_pbr::add_clusters` is no longer an exclusive system
- the top level `bevy_ecs::schedule` module was replaced with `bevy_ecs::scheduling`
- `tick_global_task_pools_on_main_thread` is no longer run as an exclusive system. Instead, it has been replaced by `tick_global_task_pools`, which uses a `NonSend` resource to force running on the main thread.
## Migration Guide
- Calls to `.label(MyLabel)` should be replaced with `.in_set(MySet)`
- Stages have been removed. Replace these with system sets, and then add command flushes using the `apply_system_buffers` exclusive system where needed.
- The `CoreStage`, `StartupStage, `RenderStage` and `AssetStage`  enums have been replaced with `CoreSet`, `StartupSet, `RenderSet` and `AssetSet`. The same scheduling guarantees have been preserved.
  - Systems are no longer added to `CoreSet::Update` by default. Add systems manually if this behavior is needed, although you should consider adding your game logic systems to `CoreSchedule::FixedTimestep` instead for more reliable framerate-independent behavior.
  - Similarly, startup systems are no longer part of `StartupSet::Startup` by default. In most cases, this won't matter to you.
  - For example, `add_system_to_stage(CoreStage::PostUpdate, my_system)` should be replaced with
  - `add_system(my_system.in_set(CoreSet::PostUpdate)`
- When testing systems or otherwise running them in a headless fashion, simply construct and run a schedule using `Schedule::new()` and `World::run_schedule` rather than constructing stages
- Run criteria have been renamed to run conditions. These can now be combined with each other and with states.
- Looping run criteria and state stacks have been removed. Use an exclusive system that runs a schedule if you need this level of control over system control flow.
- For app-level control flow over which schedules get run when (such as for rollback networking), create your own schedule and insert it under the `CoreSchedule::Outer` label.
- Fixed timesteps are now evaluated in a schedule, rather than controlled via run criteria. The `run_fixed_timestep` system runs this schedule between `CoreSet::First` and `CoreSet::PreUpdate` by default.
- Command flush points introduced by `AssetStage` have been removed. If you were relying on these, add them back manually.
- Adding extract systems is now typically done directly on the main app. Make sure the `RenderingAppExtension` trait is in scope, then call `app.add_extract_system(my_system)`.
- the `calculate_bounds` system, with the `CalculateBounds` label, is now in `CoreSet::Update`, rather than in `CoreSet::PostUpdate` before commands are applied. You may need to order your movement systems to occur before this system in order to avoid system order ambiguities in culling behavior.
- the `RenderLabel` `AppLabel` was renamed to `RenderApp` for clarity
- `App::add_state` now takes 0 arguments: the starting state is set based on the `Default` impl.
- Instead of creating `SystemSet` containers for systems that run in stages, simply use `.on_enter::<State::Variant>()` or its `on_exit` or `on_update` siblings.
- `SystemLabel` derives should be replaced with `SystemSet`. You will also need to add the `Debug`, `PartialEq`, `Eq`, and `Hash` traits to satisfy the new trait bounds.
- `with_run_criteria` has been renamed to `run_if`. Run criteria have been renamed to run conditions for clarity, and should now simply return a bool.
- States have been dramatically simplified: there is no longer a "state stack". To queue a transition to the next state, call `NextState::set`
## Points of Difficulty and Controversy
**Reviewers, please give feedback on these and look closely**
1.  Default sets, from the RFC, have been removed. These added a tremendous amount of implicit complexity and result in hard to debug scheduling errors. They're going to be tackled in the form of "base sets" by @cart in a followup.
2. The outer schedule controls which schedule is run when `App::update` is called.
3. I implemented `Label for `Box<dyn Label>` for our label types. This enables us to store schedule labels in concrete form, and then later run them. I ran into the same set of problems when working with one-shot systems. We've previously investigated this pattern in depth, and it does not appear to lead to extra indirection with nested boxes.
4. `SubApp::update` simply runs the default schedule once. This sucks, but this whole API is incomplete and this was the minimal changeset.
5. `time_system` and `tick_global_task_pools_on_main_thread` no longer use exclusive systems to attempt to force scheduling order
6. Implemetnation strategy for fixed timesteps
7. `AssetStage` was migrated to `AssetSet` without reintroducing command flush points. These did not appear to be used, and it's nice to remove these bottlenecks.
8. Migration of `bevy_render/lib.rs` and pipelined rendering. The logic here is unusually tricky, as we have complex scheduling requirements.
## Future Work (ideally before 0.10)
- Rename schedule_v3 module to schedule or scheduling
- Add a derive macro to states, and likely a `EnumIter` trait of some form
- Figure out what exactly to do with the "systems added should basically work by default" problem
- Improve ergonomics for working with fixed timesteps and states
- Polish FixedTime API to match Time
- Rebase and merge #7415
- Resolve all internal ambiguities (blocked on better tools, especially #7442)
- Add "base sets" to replace the removed default sets.
f8a229b0c9 bevy_reflect: Add compile fail tests for bevy_reflect (#7041)
# Objective
There isn't really a way to test that code using bevy_reflect compiles or doesn't compile for certain scenarios. This would be especially useful for macro-centric PRs like #6511 and #6042.
Using `bevy_ecs_compile_fail_tests` as reference, added the `bevy_reflect_compile_fail_tests` crate.
Currently, this crate contains a very simple test case. This is so that we can get the basic foundation of this crate agreed upon and merged so that more tests can be added by other PRs.
b58ca8721a ci: Use Ubuntu 22.04 runner for run-examples, run-examples-on-wasm jobs (#6875)
# Objective
- The `run-examples-on-wasm` job fails on Ubuntu 22.04, when it was previously working on Ubuntu 20.04. Playwright 1.22.1 (the version currently pinned by us) fails trying to install system dependencies that were renamed between Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04.
- The `run-examples` job previously failed on Ubuntu 22.04 with errors consistent with those listed in [this upstream mesa bug](https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/7819).
- Fixes #6832
## Solution
- Upgrade `playwright` to the latest [v1.28.1](https://github.com/microsoft/playwright/releases/tag/v1.28.1) release. Ubuntu 22.04 support was [added](https://github.com/microsoft/playwright/pull/14588) in [v1.23.0](https://github.com/microsoft/playwright/releases/tag/v1.23.0). The [test now passes on 22.04](https://github.com/oliviacrain/bevy/actions/runs/3633583112/jobs/6130757397), and the output screenshots are unchanged from previous job outputs.
- Use `ubuntu-latest` for the `run-examples` job. No other modifications necessary. The [PPA we pull mesa from](https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers) rebuilt the package for 22.04 with the [upstream fix](https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/merge_requests/20145/diffs?commit_id=b3d1ae19f2f4d93cf0a5f45a598149ac4e8e05aa).
0e9c6dddb2 try to fix run-examples (#6810)
# Objective
- run examples is failing with `xvfb-run: error: Xvfb failed to start`
## Solution
- rollback ubuntu version for run-examples to 20.04. latest is 22.04
## Notes
- this is just a quick fix and someone should probably get it working on 22.04. I'll make an issue for that if this gets merged.
